When did the standards for single-player FPS fall off the table?

Look at all the reviews for CoD4, Halo 3, and KZ2. All reviews talk say that the games have a good to great single player campaign. Yet when I actually played the damn things, I couldn't find those great campaigns anywhere.

CoD4's campaign was straight up terrible while Halo 3 and and KZ2's campaigns were just meh.

What happened, reviewers?

It seems single player has become a secondary concern nowadays. People just play through it to learn the controls, not caring how generic the gameplay, how short and shallow the content, or how terrible the plot. Then they hop to multiplayer for teh lulz.

Personally I'm not into this and if a game fails to deliver a good single player experience I'll be disappointed no matter how "fun" (I say this with reservation as I often disagree with other people, specially console fanboys regarding what they consider great multiplayer) the multiplayer is.

if the game has online multiplayer, then it's likely the single player will be average at best these days if you want a good single player experience, get bioshock or something along those lines

They fell into the hype and wanted you to expect a great single player campaign, they do it all the time sadly.

This is funny because when dealing with consoles online (XBL or PSN) theres LOADS of undesireables I find while playing. I downright do not enjoy playing consoles online, theres just not enough options i've come to know playing PC games online. I play consoles only for their single player experiance and have my much-better online experiance on a PC.

CoD4 and Halo 3 are great campaign games. Don't know about KZ2 but the others are brilliant.

I thought the single player modes in Halo 3 and Cod 4 were brilliant, and so far so is the killzone 2 single player.

I agree with the TC. I'm playing CoD 4's single player for the first time and I'm not liking it. It's more like a cinematic experience than single player campaign.
