edit: applies to pc gta too :P

With the soon to be release of gta V trailer Ill thought Ill make a topic of when we all.. some of us become a fan of the franchise.

Personally I started with gta 3. That was pretty ground breaking at the time with sandbox and all.

When I was about 8. Me and a few of my friends were at a this kids house while our parents were upstairs having a party and we were all huddled in the basement taking turns playing GTA 3. I was so amazed the amount of freedom you could have and the cool things you could do and after that I begged for my parents to get me a GTA game. That christmas they got me Vice City and it was one of my favorite games ever. I'm still a diehard GTA fan to this day :D

GTA IV. III and Vice City came out before my parents allowed mt to play M rated games. I borrowed them from some friends and goofed around in them but I didn't really find them that fun. Some time after San Andreas came out I borrowed that from and friend and honestly the graphics were so bad I stopped playing like half and hour in. When GTA IV was coming out there was so much hype and excitement among my friends that I thought I'd give it a chance and I really liked it. I got San Andreas on xbox live some time later when it was deal of the week, I had trouble getting into it but earlier this year I managed to play it, partly because I just didn't have the money to buy any new games. I liked it, but I prefer GTA IV. I might play the other later but I look forward to GTA V.

I couldn't get into them until it went "3D". It was the first game that I played that actually got a full city right. For the most part, they still are the best at nailing the feel of a actual city.More than the subject matter that's what I love about GTA games. The cities the stories inhabit are as much of a character as any human in the game.

GTA2 for Dreamcast. After that I went back and played the original/expansions on PC, then moved onto III, Advance, and Vice City. Disliked San Andreas, hated IV+expansions. VCS, LCS, and Chinatown Wars are sweet, though.

London 61 on the PC was my first one. Then I played 69 then 2 then the original. Once III came out, I lost interest but I still ended up playing all of them. Then IV came out and I didn't care for it too much, but going back now on the PC I realize I actually really, really, really like IV.

I knew about the older 2D GTA games, and my buddies were in love with III and Vice City, but I didn't really get into them. Aside from my parents kind of being iffy on them even into my teen years, I never saw my buddies doing anything but screwing around so I thought that's all it was. When I borrowed San Andreas, it blew my mind with the story, characters, and cool missions. I ended up getting the Trilogy pack and playing all 3.

GTA 1 era. Some good times. I remember how stupidly excited I was to get my hand on the next gen GTA (GTA III)

It did not disappoint.

Very recently when I started playing San Andreas, IV, and Chinatown Wars. I don't know if I'm a "fan" but they're really good games and the writing is pretty amazing by video game standards.

GTA3. I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I was able to hit a guy with a bat and steal somebodys car just because I could -- was a bit off putting at first but it totally grew on me after a while.

Great to see many people started with GTA 1 & 2:D

Because of the popularity of GTA 3 those games get often forgotten about.

It was terrible compared to Vice City. Vice City seemed to me like great care was taken in every aspect of development. The story was witty and hilarious, the voice acting was superb (Ray Liotta, Danny Trejo, Lee Majors, Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper, Jenny McCarthy, Luis Guzman, Tom Sizemore, Gary Busey...), the atmosphere (soundtrack, visual design) was incredible, the mission structure was varied and challenging... With San Andreas I felt like Rockstar was just trying to cram as much crap into a box as possible. The story and characters seemed hollow and cliched in an attempt to appeal to a more mainstream audience, the Sims-styIe stats management was an exercise in tedium, the map was too spread out (massive area with little to do and huge driving distances through nothing in-between story segments)... San Andreas was still leagues better than IV, but in my opinion it lacks the soul and craftsmanship of Vice City.

I started with Vice City, went on to GTA3 and then San Andreas.

After SA, though, I lost interest in the series. It didn't help that GTA4 was a rather boring game.

Vice City is the one that made me a fan, played it countless times so much so i have the city memorized in my head. Then San Andreas is the game that made me a fanboy, unfortunately. I love these two games.

Back in the ps1 days when I played GTA1 or 2 can't really remember which one. I never owned any of the ps1 GTA games though, I just kept renting them(weird I know but hey I was a little kid lol :P).
Later when I got my ps2 I bought San Andreas, the first GTA game I ever bought, and it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time.

So I'm not really sure which vote I should pick. :P
I played and liked the games when I had a ps1 but I didn't own any of them back then.
I bought my first GTA for the ps2 but I already liked GTA from the ps1 days.

The original GTA on the PC. Really good game that was delightfully over the top.

The series peaked for me at Vice City, SA annoyed me with its RPG pretensions (A blatant attempt by Rockstar for GTA to be taken seriously) and IV lacked some of the GTA soul. V is going to have to be something special for me to get it.
