I mean I understand there is large demand for the Wii and everything......but seriously, Nintendo...you are misisng out on PRIME sales for your system right now. At what point does it start becoming a serious problem and people just look elsewhere (ps3 and 360) for a gaming console.

Nintendo expects Wii shortage to continue through 2007 Holiday Season

Is Nintendo still claiming to have "production problems"?

I never see them. I hear they are going to try to up production to get them out there pre-holiday. They want to ship something like 16 million by years end (I think).

People said Nintendo was missing out on a ton of sales months ago.

Turns out they were wrong and that people are willing to wait. I know that if I were a company, I'd much rather have issues keeping up with demand than the converse.

First, theere is no doubt this an artificial drought. That said, Nintendo stated recently that they expect it to normalize in Japan by September so it should happen in the US soon.

Someone going on about artifical shortages again? How does Nintendo magically contract companies to pump out a set number of Wiis in an instant anyways? I'm always curious as to how people know so much about hardware manufacturing.

Making a million units a month is not creating an artificial drought. Thats approx 33,000 units a day. How many factories does Nintendo have. One? Maybe 2? We just haven't seen a demand like this before.

It's pretty ridiculous that it's not available on store shelves. It's just going to get worse when holiday season starts.

Why would you have an artifical shortage for this long anyway... like the OP said... people will buy other stuff If they cant' find it... and there is plenty of demand... What good does it do for nintendo to keep it in short supply...

(PS half the problem is the people buying and selling them on Ebay,) they are buying out stores as soon as they come into stock...

I agree. they are selling so many that it's almost hard to see them holding units back. they might be just stretched in production since they also make the DS which sells even more a month.

"

Ken Toyoda, a Nintendo Japan spokesperson, confirmed the shortage statements saying: "Judging from the current situation, the region is probably expecting a shortage of the machines. The situation in the Japanese market is not yet clear, but there probably won't be a shortage like last year."

Nintendo stated in their E3 2007 press conference last week that the Wii has been sold out every week for the 33 weeks since its launch in November 2006. Since launch, Nintendo has sold 2.84 million Wii's in the U.S., twice the Playstation 3's 1.38 million. Nintendo sold 5.8 million units of the Wii worldwide by March 2007, and aims to sell another 14 million between then and March 2008.

i don't buy the ebay theory. ppl did that with the ps3 also but demand fell so far that many got stuck with units they couldn't make a profit on. if ppl are still able to make profits on ebay with the wii that just backs up Nintendo's claim that demand is just nuts since they are selling a million a month.

i think they're kinda doing it on purpose i mean they knew since after launch that their console was selling like hot cakes and any production problem should be solved by now. i bet they ramp up production just in time holidays to start a buying frenzy

I don't buy that theory either. Anyone who is buyign a Wii to sell it is dumb. They're not gonna make enough money to make it worth their while.....what with ebay fees and paypal fees , plus the inconvenience of having to find one.......I just don't see it honestly.

And maybe this is just the crazy economist in me, but perhaps, just perhaps, this is due to overwhelming demand, not underwhelming supply, and Nintendo isn't in the position to start pumping out a ton more right away.

There's a possible chance of stockpiling.

The week before Dragon Quest was released in Japan, the Wii sold 70k, the week it was, it sold 100k.

The week before Paper Mario was released in the US, the Wii sold 90k, the week it was it sold 140k.

Okay, you've got the factory to make stuff. Now there's getting the machinery needed to make the products, hiring and training workers to operate and maintain the machinery, hiring extra management to oversee the extra production, procuring the extra materials needed to manufacture the new consoles, putting your economists to use to determine where the consoles would be best sent, contracting the extra shipping to get the consoles there...

No matter how strong the holiday lineup is for any of the consoles.......PS3, Wii, or 360 (they're all VERY strong in one way or another) it won't matter if you have nothing to play it on. If Wii can't get units out there...(And this is a BIG holiday season for Nintendo more so than Sony or Microsoft IMO)...well Mom and Dad can't buy em for Johnny. And Johnny can't be disappointed can he? Hello ps3 or 360.

The casuals will stay with the Wii :|

Prime 3 comes in August. Nintendo has Japan on lockdown, even the DS is supply constrained over there. And the Wii has MANY games in October and November with SSBB in December.

Nintendo doesnt produce all the Wii's by themselves. They get Foxcon or Toshiba, who have the facilities, to do it for them. All they would need to do is lease 2 or 3 more production facilities. It's not like they can't afford it.

nintendo do need to get this sorted. demand is very high and i know they cant just flip a switch and double production but eventually ppl are going to get tired of waiting or paying more than the standard price for it. if u think its bad now...just imagine christmas. demand is going to go nuts.
