Now, not all franchises need to innovate themselves all that much -- if the formula is perfect already, some polish and extra content is enough to satisfy. However, over the course of several years, some forumlas while good, feel stale for the the 3rd or 4th time around.
A quick example is DMC4. The classic DMC gameplay will always be solid, but a lot of fans were dissapointed to see the same old game stepping into the next-generation with little more than a texture upgrade, new bosses, and a story that few cared for.
On the other hand, a game like FFXII reinvented a franchise. Square Enix replace the age old tradition of turn based gameplay and successfully created a unique design that still kept their FF feel. They also took a different approach on the narration. I don't want to argue about FFXII today, it's just an example of a reinvention that received both critical and commercial success.
I bring this topic up because a lot of my favorite franchises are continuing in directions that feel stale. That doesn't mean that these new games aren't solid, but games being $60, I'm not interested in buying into an old experience. Resident Evil 5, DMC4, NG2, Gears of War 2 -- all solid games, yet for me they are rentals.
Please understand that I don't expect sequels to always be drastically different, if the formula is still enjoyable -- by all means pump them out. However, if the formula is a one time hit, or has been reproduced too often by other games, I will still play the sequel but I will be underwhelmed.
What franchises need a reinvention? What franchise should stay the same?
Some discussion topics to jog your brain:
Should the next Zelda stick to the OoT and TP formula? Will the Metroid series benefit from Team Ninja's direction? Do you think the next Halo games are smart ideas? How long will the Call of Duty formula hold up?
etc...
