Where have all the beat em ups gone?

Back in the 16 bit days beat em ups were really popular and they deserved to be because they were alot of fun. We passed hours playing such great games as Final Fight, Double Dragon, and Streets of Rage. The last beat em up I remember come out was FF street wise and it rated really bad. If someone did it right I think this genre could come back. A new Double Dragon would be awesome!

I think it's a dying genre. Darn shame, too.

At least there's some depth to the combat. I always found the old style of beat-em-up horribly dull TBH.

But then I guess most of those games were co-op reliant.

Because no way are you going to compare those two with the one you've listed.

Marvel Nemesis was the last beat em up I've played and it was ****ing terrible. My freaking god.

Developers gave up after it became very apparent that Streets of Rage 2 would never be surpassed. It's like Jerry Rice, no one ever is going to come close to the level of the G.O.A.T, so anything new would be settling for less. The next best thing is SoR Remake, but even then, it's still based on the same gameplay.

Theres a free to play MMO beat em up called Rusty Hearts. Its downloaable through Steam or from the games website, you could give it a try for nothing. Also there is Streets of Rage Remake for PC which is also free.

I agree there needs to be more up to date beat em ups, it was my favorite genre when i was a kid ( Target Renegade, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Final Fight ect ) and i would love to play some in the high resolution graphics we have today.
