Where is this skyrim hype coming from? GOTY? Seriously?

I mean, am I the only one who played oblivion?

Repetitive dugeons

Terrible NPCS and voice acting

HORRENDOUS level scaling

Bland combat

Terribly linear quests

No karma system

General lack of depth compared to its predecessor

All of the pre-release lies

The last point in particular really interests me. I feel like the only people who are getting hyped for skyrim are those who were surprised by oblivion, because NO ONE in there right mind who was hyped for oblivion would be hyped for skyrim, after bethesda lied or overexaggerated just about everything that was in their game. You know what they say, fool me once...

...Or are we talking about the modded version that people will have to make to fix all of skyrim's inevitable problems? In that case, yea, I'll sign up on the AAA hype. But if not, please, tell me how on earth skyrim deserves the pleasure of being hyped.

I'm certainly not going to buy it at launch anyway.

I see the Elder Scroll games as a Jack of Trades kind of RPG. It offers a good amount of content, although indiviually the elements aren't so great, the overall package makes it a good game.

I would be shocked if Skyrim doesn't get GOTY. Each time I see in game footage I'm blown away. It's in another league compared to Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I know what you mean. I can see this game being really great for a lot of people, but for me, no matter how many videos or previews i look at, i just don't get that feeling of excitement that i had with Morrowind. In fact, it looks worse each time i see it.

I am super hyped for Skyrim, but I agree Oblivion was pretty terrible. Remember though, that the majority of people who played Oblivion loved it. Elder Scrolls is a very established franchise so the fans know what they want. If Skyrim wins GOTY I'll be dissapointed, but not too much, and surprised.

From what I'm seeing Skyrim should be much better than Oblivion, but the golden rule with hype is don't buy into it. Some of the better games I've played this generation get no attention and I never saw commercials for them telling people how awesome they were.

I think Zelda will be the best game this year. It looks awesome.

When I say "looks" I mean gameplay as well you know. As in "man this will be an awesome game to play." And I think the art styIe is just fine anyways.

Morrowind was one of my favourite games last gen, just like Oblivion one of my favourite this gen. I dont see any reason to not hype it like crazy :D

Cool, and I think Zelda will be better. For me at least. Alot of the changes sound really awesome (the dungeons are essentially part of the overworld.)

Oblivion is one of the worst games I played this gen. I am skeptical about Skyrim to say the least.

I just think Skyrim is in a different league of quality. They hired extra artists to design each dungeon separately so nothing was computer generated. They did that for the entire map.KC_Hokie

I dunno why either, I played a few hours of Oblivion and couldn't stand it.

I was surprised by the game footage. It actually looks rather bland. The world looks alright, if uninspired, but I expected the gameplay to look a little more--I don't know--evolved?

But really, when you think about it, Skyward's Swords 'realistic chance' of winning GOTY is actually fairly poor. Say what you will, but graphics matter even if they always shouldn't. And Skyword Sword is going to be going up against some very good games, just as good as Skyward Sword will be if not better, that will put the appearance of SS to shame. I love the Zelda series, but I don't think it should win GOTY.

Well if graphics mattered so much then Crysis 1 would have many GOTY and would still be regarded as the best game of the gen.If graphics mattered so much then every year only PC games would win the best scores and GOTY.

And:Wind Waker with its unpopular graphics won the GOTY here in 2003.

Skyward Sword has similar graphics or even better.But in the end it all comes down to gameplay.Also the Legend of Zelda series is one of the most prestigous series in the gaming world.If mainsteam magazines and publications listed the most prestigous series of any plattform in the last 30 years Zelda would be minimum top 5.I couldnt say the same about Elder Scrolls.

Well, I'm glad you admit it's an exaggeration XD But, can't see it flopping. Skyrim isn't really wandering away from the formula of its predeccessor, so I don't understand how critics would rate the game poorly, unless of course Bethesda really drops the ball here. Why do you think it will flop (besides the fact that you disliked Oblivion)?
