No contest, Sony has the best FP development in gaming. How is Nintendo winning this poll? There FP development is not even in the same league as Sony'sdjsifer01
I will have to respectfully disagree on the bolded part. The majority of Nintendo's first party games are excellent.

Red Dead is also on the PS3. Yeah Zelda games do suck hard, I mean ocarina of time did not get any award and isnt classifies as the highest rated game of all time or anything like that........

Lol at thinking Rockstar are MS first party... the only MS first party studios to have made a AAA (on Gamespot) this gen are Turn10 (Forza games) and Rare (PDZ), and PDZ is only AAA on GS, it falls short on Metacritic. (Technically Bungie were first party when Halo3 came out, I think, but they are no longer a MS first party studio.

But not excellent enough to be AAA? The only AAA first party this gen they have on GamesSpot are SMG games, SSBB and... WarioWare. Or for metacritic, Galaxy games, SSBB and Metroid Prime 3.

And Mario Kart DS. And Yoshi's Island DS. And Advance Wars Dual Strike. And Nintendogs. And Bowser's Inside Story. And Phantom Hourglass. And New Super Mario Bros. Btw AA games are great too, believe it or not.

They do, but its not enough to warrant a vote when there are companies who dedicate more to their 1st party and have much more done.

I can tell from your post count you spend alot of time on gamespot, so you must know how well nintendo's first party franchises (mario, zelda, metriod, smash bros, kirby, ect) have been historically. (hell, the two most critically acclaimed games of this generation belong to the man in the red hat). To say that wii sports represents nintendo's first party games can only be interpreted as a desire to remain ignorant.

3 games have gotten a 10 this gen. MGS4, GTA4, and SMG2. Of those, 1 is on Wii, 1 is on 360, and 2 are on PS3. Or, on Metacritic, if you prefer, all three systems have a game at 98. Or maybe you mean just exclusives, in which case, you're technically right. SMG2, 98, and SMG, 97, are the two highest rated games this gen. But that doesn't tell the whole story, does it? Wii has only 10 games in the 90s, only 4 of which are exclusives. PS3 has over 20 games in the 90s, 6 are exclusives, 8 if you count MLB the Show games. 360 has over 20 games in the 90s, 4 of which are exclusives.

The only MS first party studio with games over 90 is Turn10. Ninty has EAD Tokyo and Retro. Sony has Santa Monca, Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, and Guerilla. The numbers don't lie, Sony clearly has the stronger first party, both in number of AAA studios, and number of AAA games being put out.

to clarify, i never stated that nintendo had the best first party this gen, or anything to that effect. I was simply pointing out that wii sports is not a good representative of ninty's first party efforts.

It's because most people only count the Console first party titles when they should count the Handheld first party titles they are mainly so much better then the console first party titles.

Just looking at PURE output of real retail 1st Party / 2nd Party games for the Wii and real 1st Party/2nd Party retail games for the PS3, PS3 wins easily. It's just output, and quality games.

Nintendo is one of my FAVORITE developers of all time, but they have been divided with their resources, and have not consistently delivered for me and my posse this generation. That being said, when they do step up, it's great, but too many Wii Party, Wii Music, Wii Sports type games aren't going to make up for the periodic releases like Super Mario Galaxy 2, etc.

It's a close race, and NOSTALGIA is hard to fight for me, the recent Nintendo momentum is hard to ignore (SMG2 is AWESOME!!!), but Sony has the best 1st Party now on the PS3, second by Wii...and Xbox isn't even in this equation (They seemed like they gave up, with an occassional Fable/Halo/GeoW, but prefer 3rd Party deals instead).

No contest, Sony has the best FP development in gaming. How is Nintendo winning this poll? There FP development is not even in the same league as Sony'sdjsifer01

It's simple, the Nostalgia, Super Mario Galaxy 2 recent release, and the recent good E3 showing from Nintendo. It's just the Nintendo momentum combined with this thread's timing. It's fine though, Nintendo is quite amazing.

This was a hard choice between Sony and Nintendo. But I gave it to SONY because they actually make new games instead of remaking the same one for twenty years.

That's a misconception about Nintendo they make new IPs all the time it is just people ignore them. They have 40+ New IPs on the DS half of them are for the core gaming market. On the Wii they have around 14 new IPs half of them are for the Core gaming market and half of the ones for the core gaming market never leave Japan.

I have no idea why. Granted titles are overated everywhere but I honestly find Sony all flash good but not great substance. that said when they get it right (Uncharted 2), they get it right buts its rare for a Sony title to have that kind of polish where as most Nintendo titles show clear amounts of polish and care. Of course this is SW, SW equates graphics and technological achievements to effort where as stuff like clever design and polish don't get much praise.

1) Sony (dominant from 2005-today)

  • Pros: good at taking a new concept and fleshing it out, consistently high production values
  • Cons: not all of their games are hits or fun

2) Nintendo (dominant from 1985-2004)

  • Pros: really good at reinventing concepts (new or old), consistently high-quality/cutting edge game design
  • Cons: tendency to milk ip's

3) Microsoft (has never been dominant)

  • Pros: good at taking old concepts and making them more fun, consistently high-value
  • Cons: tendency to run studios into the ground, ignore good/new ideas

I used to love Nintendo back in the early 90's and even slightly after that...but my taste altered as I grew older....sure nintendo has some awesome IPs, but majority of them aren't appealing to me anymore. At this point, I have to hand it to SONY.

System Wars official Spreadsheet doesn't track handhelds, but on Metacritic, there are 4 AAA 1st party exclusive ds games, bringing Ninty to 8, or 10, if you count non-exclusive first party titles and compilations, like TP and Metroid Prime Trilogy.

PSP has only 1, bringing them up to 8, or 10 if you include first party ps2 games that have released during this gen (if you're gonna count multiple systems, may as well count all of em their first party supports).

So sure, if you go by metacritic strictly by the numbers, and throw in all the first party games released over multiple systems, it's a wash, but PS3 versus Wii is no contest. As for AA games, PS3 has 170 80+ games on Metacritic. Wii has 84. I don't feel like going through that many to see what's first party or not.

SONY

All the way. They produce appealing, quality games...one after another, constantly bringing up new IP's and Sequels of current gen and past gen's 1st party games...their on aPermanentroll.

Nintendo comes in at a second..but their production rate is so DAMN slow..a lot of the 1st party Nintendo games this gen have been so..unappealing (Im talking about all those Wii XXX games. not SMG1/2).

Microsoft = Lulz. Although halo reach looks pretty good.

I don't really see why this has to be Nostalgia. The thread asked us what company we think has the best 1st party. It didn't ask me to make up my mind based off of SW facts but rather your own opinion. I find Sony first party overated, I think in terms of output Nintendo releases more titles that down the line I am not going to say been there down that where as Sony is more me too. Sony is really good but to me they get too much praise. Nostalgia has nothing to do with me think inFamous is boring, LBP is a mediocore platformer and more shooters is just more shooters and they need more than to be great to grip me. I think this idea is simply a Sony bias, not an actual profound reason as to why Sony is better. Not when the thread is asking who makes better games in your opinion.

First of all, in SW many posters will just vote the company line, even if they don't personally believe it.

Secondly, many have opinions about things without having played or beat any of the games. I know posters that don't have a PS3, or a Wii or have never played Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Uncharted 2 and have extreme opinions on those games...those guys probably shouldn't be voting, that's true. I even acknowledge my nostalgia bias, as I grew up on Nintendo and Super Nintendo, I can't help it. I'm not going to pretend I didn't love Nintendo.

The key difference is I own all the Nintendo systems, and I can say that I don't feel Nintendo's presense like I did gens before. I also know Nintendo has momentum right now specifically in SW with SMG2 score and E3's showing. Specifially, I find Nintendo's 1st party games lack high presentation values, voice acting, no online modes (or gimped online), lack of CG or story, lack of HD, and many of my favorite Wii games don't actually need the Wii motion, like it's tacked on. They are still brilliant games, but I think Nintendo gets a free pass from fans on certain levels, and those same standards are not applied to other companies (Capcom, Konami, Sony, whoever). Other companies couldn't get away with not delivering on so many fronts so often. This wasn't always the case, but Technology just isn't Nintendo's forte like it once was, at least on the console games level, imo. It's fine, but you mentioned what you thought specifically, and I thought I owed you a larger explanation. Nintendo is awesome, but they are divided by supporting the Nongamers and the core gamers, and I get that...but I can still "feel" the lack of output for me, year in and year out.

That being said, I think the idea of ignoring nostalgia votes is simply a Nintendo bias, not an actual profound reason as to why Nintendo is better. I would rather a company deliver 30 AA-AAA games to me rather than 10 AA-AAA games. It's all about opinion sure, but I wanted to share mine as to variables some people in SW would NEVER consider. Now they can at least consider the notion, even if it is to disagree with the idea.

In the end, this is a thread about opinions, and that was yours and this is mine. Maybe my post doesn't apply to you, maybe your post doesn't apply to me, but there are those they might apply to...and they should read it.

I read the Thread's TITLE, saw a post, and attempted to answer for some of the votes. Whatever, it doesn't matter to me in the end, just an observer.

Nintendo dominates so hard it's ridiculous. THey've shown over like 25 years that they're the best and they're still as monsterous as ever before. Plus they made OoT, which opens a can of whoop-ass on every game Sony and MS have ever made combined.

Dunno. I initially brought metacritic up in this thread because someone claimed Wii had the two highest rated games this gen, which is obviously not true going by GS scores, since they have exactly the same number of AAAAE games as PS3, so obviously they were going by metacritic (or gamerankings). And since the official spreadsheet doesn't include handhelds, and it was faster for me to compare scores on metacritic, I went with that to look at handhelds.

but i do love sonys first party even though

Nintendo easily. Sony's great. Microsoft, not so much. But Nintendo can almost single-handedly carry it's consoles with it's own games.

Personally Sony this generation, Nintendo has faltered a bit and Microsoft seems to be taking steps backwards killing Rare and all.

Nintendo has the history, Sony was practically forced to make 1st party exclusives after losing 3rd Party support left and right. Of course, with Uncharted and Resistance, it's arguable that it's a blessing in disguise. Overall, I have to say Nintendo for making games that are so good that 3rd party sales suffer because it absolutely pales in comparison to the likes of Mario, Zelda and Metroid.

i see, you are judging me now. I guess you were too deeply offended by my comments on Nintendo eh? Dont take it too personal buddy.

i could care less but your a level 63. i been singed up for gamespot for 5 years and didnt pass 24 yet thats just what im seeing

whoops wrong post thats for a different thread:P

what i meant to say you sound like every other person thats on gamespot listening to their rants or complaints about nonsense. You just belittled a cmpany that has the highest rated game this gen and its inferior as well...

I choose Nintendo. Sony and MS don't really have any first party exclusives that catch my attention........

Nintendo's got that magic touch to their games that keeps me going, but I prefer Sony's to be honest.

Both Nintendo and SONY are Firsty Party powerhouses. I do think Nintendo has the more Staple First party icons and whatnot. Most of Nintendos and SONYs first party stuff is really solid. And on teh wii, First party is one of the only reasons to really care about the console IMO.

I used to love Nintendo back in the early 90's and even slightly after that...but my taste altered as I grew older....sure nintendo has some awesome IPs, but majority of them aren't appealing to me anymore. At this point, I have to hand it to SONY.verbalfilth
Agreed... Back in the NES - SNES era I would of choose Nintendo (or most importantly PC.. ) but then Nintendo started loosing 3rd party support and focusing almost exclusivily on the same ips and cartoon characters. It got old quick. Sony reinvigorating my love for console gaming with the ps1 and its plethora or jrpgs, survival horror and action/adventure games with full on 3rd party support... Fast forward 2 decades and ninty still is doing the same thing... and frankly I do see the appeal.

Nintendo has the best first party games in my opinion. A number of the people voting for Sony more than likely counting second party companies.

Why are people voting Nintendo? Most of what they have done is wii sports resort and other simple games.

RadecSupreme
*Epic facepalm* Yes let's pretend Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 don't exist. Hell lets pretend Metroid Prime 3 doesn't exist either. Or Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Or New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Also ignore all DS games (which are a crap load) and let's also ignore the fact that they have a new Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Metroid, and Kid Icarus.

Why are we talking about 3rd party support again? This is about FIRST PARTY games :?.
