I know it's a little too early for a poll like this to include 7th gen consoles, when there are still highly anticipated games that have yet to be released.

But with the Wii U launching next year to start the 8th generation of consoles, I just wanted to know people's thoughts on which generation had the best games.

*this poll does not include handhelds*

The 4th gen by far, namely due to the G.O.A.T, the Sega Genesis.

After that I'd rank 'em: 5th>6th>7th>3rd>2nd>1st.

Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knucles

Super Mario World

Super Mario all Stars

Super Castlevania 4

Streets of Rage 2

Street Fighter 2

Another World

Flashback

Thunderforce series

Even though XBOX/Gamecube were abysmal... the 6th gen... Man that PS2 made up for 3 consoles :P followed by the 5th gen, which had the superb library of the N64 AND Psone. Two GREAT consoles in one gen. I'd rated the current gen (7th) third place, mainly in due part to the excellent quality of exclusives on PS3.

I went ahead and said this generation overall. 4th and 6th gen are tied in a close second. 4th gen Sega Genesis was great with action/platformers (Sonic leading the way of course), and the EA sports games really started to come on. NHL '93 and early Madden games are still my favorites. It was a time before they tried to get far to Sim like instead of just fun games. Racing wasnt that good though. Shooters weren't a big deal then. 6th gen PS2 of course. Shooters were awesome with Socom 2 and Star Wars Battlefront leading the way. The action/adventure games were still great with Ratchet and Clank, X-men Legends, etc. I didnt like the sports games of this gen much. Racing games were not that great for me either. 7th gen overall leadsShooters are still good enough. The action/adventure games are better than ever. Sports games are a little better than last gen with NHL 11 leading the way. Racing games are much better than before. Motorstorm has been the best racing series I have played.

Fifth > fourth > third > sixth = second > seventh > first. Speaking for firsthand experience. See signature. Fifth versus fourth is a really tough call for me. I'd say Saturn, PS1, and N64 combined are about dead even with Genesis+add-ons, SNES, and TG16/CD combined. But when you include the other systems, fifth generation (3DO, Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar, Atari Jaguar CD, Virtual Boy, PC-FX) edges out fourth (CD-i, Neo Geo).

So I go with this one.

4th GENERATION. It was the generation I actually bought my consoles with my own hard earn money working at a Deli and a Pizza shop.

But also the generation where I had some of my most fondest memories. Such as friends coming over to hangout and play and where we argue like a bumch of fanboys over which system was better: SNES or Genesis or TG16 or Neo-Geo which nobody had one among my friends but still debated on how better it was, LOL.

this questions sort of fails since people who have not been gaming in previous generations will not select them. It gives more recent generations an advantage.

How so? I'm only 19 and have had at least one console from every generation on the poll.

And I'm sure most people would at least be familiar with games from the 4th gen and up.

I really got into gaming during the 5th generation and mainly only played Nintendo and Rare games so that is home to my fondest memories in gaming. During the 4th gen all I really played was Super Mario Bros. Sonic 1-3, Vectorman, Killer Instinct, and Jewel Msster

This gen ahs been good though and since gaming has become more social I have made some really good friends from around the world

Im gaming since ATARI 2600 , i was active gamer to all gens back then. I easily vote for PSone gen. And thats because the transition from 2D to 3D was a huge step forward and it was then that most tremendous new IPs released and what we play now ( most of ) is because of that gen.

Silent hill , metal gear solid , Zelda OOT , super mario 64 ,Resident Evil series , Wipeout , Gran turismo , crash bandicoot , Parasite Eve series , Final Fantasy 7-8-9, tekken series , Tony hawks series , Xenogears, Kain games, Tomb raider , sypmon filter games , all kind of new 3D sport games , the list is so huge seriously. Easily PS/sat/64 gen .

That is seriously a really crappy list. None of these games comes close to this gens game not to mention all these games have better equivalents in later gens like; SMG, res evil 4, uncharted etc I mean I'd pick Uncharted over Crash anyway. And I got like 5 Crash games and it was the first game I ever played. And Uncharted any day!

The sorry to say it but you werent active gamer back into genesis/SNES era to live in person the transition from 2D to 3D to feel the impact it had to gamers/myself and how different these games felt comparable to previous gens. You choose Uncharted everyday in 2011 , i would choose Resident evil 2 in 1997 every day . Sorry but you dont get what im talking about.

Crap list , Zelda OOT? Super mario 64? TEkken series? FF series 7 to 9? Resident evil 1-2? Man you just said , RE4 > better than oldschool REs... that shows you are not oldschool gamer... means you cant understand what i mean seriously.. in short because of original RE in PSone you had the chance to play RE4.

I respect you taste and opinion though but to have a seriously unbiased opinion on this "poll" you had to be active gamer back then otherwise i dont see how a gamer that started gaming with PS3 or PS2 will ever understand how good was the Psone era or SNESera or even ATARI 2600 era...

This gen of course if not, wouldn't all / most of us just ignore this gen, not spend a dime on this gens poorly made games and be previous gen gamers. Such a shame this gen is so awesome since I could have saved a bundle by just playing all mah old & older games. Oh well, perhaps all I can do is hope next gen sucks I guess. :P

4th generation is the gaming industry at it's best. Arcade's were still somewhat existant and alive. Living room multiplayer. And the hobby was generally still unexplored. I'd place this one in second place considering that we can play almost every classic from last gen remade and technology is really moving the gameplay forward.
