What i mean by this is how a consoles launch games looked to the games up till the last year. (e.g. for the PS2. The bouncer---FFX---GOWII)

I think its the NES. If you look at mario and then mario 3, you would think it couldnt be doable on the hardware and it wasnt even an end year game. Second would be the original Xbox. When you look at Blinx and then look at Conker, its like comparing an xbox game to a 360 game. I also think the Xbox could have done more if it had 1-2years more on the market. I doubt what we saw was its pinacle.

Anyway what do you guys think?

The PS2. The launch games failed to look better than current N64 games. And it ended with games like Okami. Also the 360. The launch games were laughable graphically (and got plenty of laughs here), but now it looks great.

Though I agree with you, the second statement is totally laughable.

Probably the PS2. GC games looked pretty amazing right from the start, so I won't go with that one.

I know. It's also true. I was there. (but to be fair, the PS2 was VERY HARD to develop for)

Hmmm... Well the SNES ended with a 3d game (star fox) and that could be considered a HUGE, almost revolutionary leap, but I would have to go with the 360, as its launch titles weren't all that great, but now we have games like Gears 2, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, and so on. With the PS2, we had games like MGS2 that were pretty close to launch, and it still looks fantastic, but MGS3, FFXII, FFX, God of War 2, and so on also look fantastic. The Gamecube always looked fantastic with games like SSBM, Metroid Prime, REmake, and so on, while it ended with great looking games such as RE4, Twilight Princess, etc.

PS2 for me. Look at games like Timesplitters 1, Oni, Midnight Club 1, etc to just the following year after launch(2001) with games like MGS2, FF10, Ico, Twisted Metal. Then jump ahead to 2005 and 2006 with games like God of War 1 and 2, RE4, and MGS3.

PS2, you start off with Armored Core, Fantavision, Summoner, and TImesplitters, to have GOW 2, SOTC, and Okami at the end, it's amazing.

The PS2 by far.

Some launch games almost looked like PSone games. Yet God of War 2, Shadow of the Colossus and Okami still manage to impress me today.

[QUOTE="Willy105"]The PS2. The launch games failed to look better than current N64 games. And it ended with games like Okami.

I agree with the PS2 but you are exaggerating. There was a huge gap between N64 games and even the very early PS2 games. Trust me, I didn't own an N64 back in the day but I had purchased one a few months ago and I was shocked at how bad the graphics have aged. [QUOTE="Willy105"]Also the 360. The launch games were laughable graphically (and got plenty of laughs here), but now it looks great.

I totally disagree. Condemned and Kameo were launch games and in my opinion though the graphics have obviously progressed the leap has not been all that huge. Hell, if anything the 360 would be last in this current gen as far as graphical improvements. The PS3 now in most people's opinions has the best graphics this gen (Killzone 2, Uncharted, MGS IV) while at the time of launch only Resistance was even somewhat impressive and even that lagged behind what the 360 was offering. The Wii is the current gen system that has made the biggest jump in my opinion. The launch games looked like B-tier PS2 stuff, while now there games that obviously can not be done on the PS2 with the same kind of success.

I'll go with the PS2 because most of the really early games didn't show the power advantage over the Dreamcast at all. And then the later games showed how big that advantage really was.

i would disagree on both parts, armored core 2 looked pretty good at launch. Perfect Dark Zero was also pretty good.

why is the ps3 being neglected. When it was released it was so far behind the 360 it was laughable. Resistance really couldn't compete with what the 360 was offering. Then, within the space of 2 years, it has managed to surpass the 360 with recent games. But PS2 is the obvious winner....

The 360 was also a year old at that point.

Well the Xbox had Halo at launch so poor choice, when doing something like this I think you have to pick the best game in the first year to the top games near the end.

Yeah but it started strong. The PS2 beats it in this thread because most of the early gamnes looked like ass.

SNES or PS2 for me. Only time will tell with Wii. If this gen ends up as long as I think it is, then Wii will be pushed to breaking point.

in the 2006-2009 timeframe i would say the PC. But with strictly consoles i would say the PS2 for last gen and the PS3 for this one. PS3 looked laughable comapred to what they promised at launch, but now it looks slightly better than the 360 (for now).

You're right - the PS2 certainly wasn't overshadowed by the N64 at launch, but certainly was by the DC.
