[QUOTE="ReaperV7"]RDR has better environment, likable characters, better story. I was surprised such a master piece came from the developers of GTA. jyoung312not same studio. RDR was made by Rockstar San Diego not Rockstar north who made GTA.
Ironically, both were published by Rockstar Games

GTA4 < RDR in my opinion.
I played GTA4 for about 2 weeks and stopped playing but I can't recall why. When I think about it now I drive a truck and ride a scooter so it kind of makes me feel like I do this in enough in real life. I dont have time to ride horses, carriages, trains, or live a fantasy in a western (well, I could but nobody would dress up and visit ghost towns or explore old western towns with me) so RDR satisifies me in this area. I also enjoy games that allow me to hunt and loot.
Read Dead Redemption, I haven't been this impressed with a Rockstar game since San Andreas. GTA 4 lacked gameplay meat, the gunplay was sluggish and slow, and apparently R* felt so too, since it's very fast and playable in RDR now. The world of RDR is much much better than gta 4, with so much more to see and do, and things to interact with. GTA 4 needed to be more interactable, more buildings to go inside, more things to buy and custimize.
Money is pretty useless in gta4, it has a lot more value in RDR, since they brought back features like buying property, from San Andreas. Also, RDR has so much more depth and content, I went through the entire game without murdering civillians or always getting chased by cops, though I was still very much able to do that, and more, if I had desired to (next playthrough :)). It's not even a competition (gameplay and world wise), my faith is restored in R*, once again.

GTA 4 downgraded GTA.
No... It revamped the gameplay, gunplay, physics (both vehiclular based and otherwise) and scale... Everything that needed to improve, did. I find older GTA games unplayable.
it downgraded the map, story, amount of vechicles, amount of things to do, and the reason why BOGT had so many crazy missions is because everyone demanded Rockstar put them pack in after removing most of the fun from gta 4's missions.[QUOTE="Leejjohno"][QUOTE="LegatoSkyheart"]

Indeed it did a terrible GTA one of the worse in fact. I couldnt even bring myself to get to the 2nd island. Rockstar "I know lets take out everything that made GTAS so fun and release another bland boring city scape GTA game." YEah the worst GTA yet to be honest Red Dead is by far superiour tho i guess its preference at the end of the day.GTA 4 downgraded GTA.

RDR because of the obvious improvements in mechanics and design. But GTA4 left a much bigger impact on me.mo0ksisame here. GTA IV was the first PC game I ever played and I was just stunned by the scale of Liberty City :P
Grand Theft Auto has indestructible trees :PObviously Alan Wake, it does have the foliage.
Do GTA 4 or RDR got the foliage? NO!!!!!

Couldn't finish GTA4. Didn't like it from the start. It's definitely a superb game, but it was missing something that made me love San Andreas so much, & I didn't like the characters. Red Dead Redemption is amazing so far, & would be in my top 5 this gen I think.
I think people are quite unfair when it comes to GTA4. The actual city it's self is amazing, it feels more alive than any of the other GTA's. The attention to detail is quite astounding. There isn't as much crazy stuff to do as in GTA:SA, but at the same time everything feels just a bit more real. I think Rockstar just wanted to be taken a bit more seriously this time around instead of relying on fun little gimmicks. Also someone said they downgraded the story? It's not amazing or anything, but seriously, it's still alot better than any other story from GTA. Also the shooting isn't perfect, but it's still an improvement over what was in GTA3 onwards.
I find GTA games incredible boring, so far i only played San Andreas and IV but i get really bored, now with RDR is different i really like this game, probably only because of the setting, but still, i take RDR over any GTA any time any day.
Grand Theft Auto IV was really good, but you couldn't lasso people and put them in front of trains, so Red Dead Redemption is better.

This. GTA SA has a million things to do, and every one of them is horribly executed compared to GTA4. Running, Shooting, etc.
The story is outlandish. Learn to fly planes over the phone from James Wood after being born in da Hood. Why not!?
The mission's inane (Stealing back a "rhyme" book for a washed up rapper? Really? Stupid.), and shooting mechanics with embarrassing AI. If GTA:SA came out new today it would be laughed at. Who care you can get fat and ride bikes if it plays like crap? Don't get me started on the "turf wars".
GTA 3, VC, and SA have all aged VERY POORLY. I have them all and have been playing them all back and forth on my PC, and I can't stomach the old playing mechanics for more then short bursts, or to laugh and how bad they are compared to today.
GTA IV and EFLC are the BEST things to happen to the franchise since it went 3D. ADD kids and nostalgia addicts are the only people who could possibly prefer a game that plays worse because you can do more.
GTA 4 = a masterpiece movie, GTA 3, VC, and SA are bad made for TV shows like "Las Vegas".
I haven't played RDR enough to say which is better, but so far its GTA4. Modern times > Western for me.

I think the complete oppisite lol I could see how RDR can be better then the whole GTA sagas so I would not doubt it.I really don't understand how anyone can see GTA IV as the superior game. Mostly everything is improved upon in RDR. The cover and targeting systems, while still a bit touchy, are smoother and more refined and the gunfights are brutal. The world is alive with its own eco-system and random events (and weather), and there's more weapons and items. The characters are better written and voice acted and are far more interesting, the horses are a hell of a lot more fun to ride than GTA's cars were to drive, and the framerate is smoother and more consistent. The world doesn't have mindless drones roaming the streets as everyone in RDR has a schedule that they follow. Because of this, it doesn't cater to the gamer's demands (sometimes there will be nobody at the poker table or behind the counter at a store) which helps the game feel more alive, not so centered on the player, hence more immersive.
On top of that, it's varied in its environments, and the economy is better balanced as money is harder to come by (at least until way later in the game), which gives incentive to hunt, gather, and go out and explore....which is very enjoyable and leads to a variety of dynamic encounters. The Dead Eye mechanic is a brilliant idea which is well implemented. The story, while still not the main draw for me as is the freedom, is much better and actually has me curious as to what's going to happen unlike GTA. I find John interesting, whereas with Niko I couldn't care less about what happened to him. And finally, there's NO PHONE- the best thing of all. I can't comment on the multiplayer as I played neither.
RDR is far and away a better game than GTA IV ever was. The only thing GTA has going for it is that it is more polished and less glitchy, and the setting, if that's your preference. RDR is what GTA IV should've been, and has fully restored my faith that R* still knows how to create the best open world sandbox games out there.

Its an opinion. I prefer GTAIV, but that doesn't mean I find to hard to believe that people prefer RDR. RDR is a fantastic game, but in my opinion, GTAIV is a little better.
Yeah, the cover and targetting system have been greatly improved in RDR which is great. And yeah, the world is alive but then so was Liberty City, and it had a day/night cycle and weather system too. As for the characters being more interesting, Im not sure I would agree. Yeah, I prefer John to Niko, but I think both games have their fair share of interesting and not-so-interesting characters.
I disagree about the horses though, I find driving cars in GTA to be a lot more fun, and the variety in transportation is greater too. NPCs in Liberty City have schedules too. For example, cruise around in the morning, and you will actually see people refilling the newspaper stands with todays newspaper.
The ecomony, yeah thats a really nice feature in RDR, something I would've loved to see in GTAIV. As for the mobile phone, I think im probably the only person who wasn't annoyed by it :P
Anyway, I prefer GTA just because Liberty city felt more magical than the setting in RDR does. There were honestly times when I was crusing through Liberty City at night with the radio blasting that actually gave me goosebumps.
GTA IV -- I believe that Rockstar North just puts more polish and substance into their games compared to Rockstar San Diego. R3FURBISHED
Yeah, I agree with this statement.

RDR was developed by both North and San Diego...
