[QUOTE="R3FURBISHED"]GTA IV -- I believe that Rockstar North just puts more polish and substance into their games compared to Rockstar San Diego. Modern_Unit
Yeah, I agree with this statement.
RDR was developed by both North and San Diego...
I don't know what specific Rockstar studio developed either games, but I agree with him that GTA IV had a lot more polish and substance than RDR. I guess I should say I agree with most of his statement lol..............

Primarily San Diego thoughI'm about 10- 15 hours in on my playthrough of RDR. So far I'm enjoying RDR's single player more but GTA4's multiplayer more. Neither has a terribly compelling story, just a random string of characters and some occasional mention of getting revenge. The gameplay and variety are really what picks these games up, but RDR doesnt force you into those things like GTA does with the phone system. RDR's multiplayer can be annoying though, the free roam mode is cool but the deathmatches boil down to roof camping and grabbing deadeye before the other guys. Plus there aren't very many modes, it's just ctf, deathmatch and grabbag. GTA 4 has a lot more variety in it's different modes, and mulitple people shooting at eachother from car windows in a heated car chase never gets old.

I really don't understand how anyone can see GTA IV as the superior game. Mostly everything is improved upon in RDR. The cover and targeting systems, while still a bit touchy, are smoother and more refined and the gunfights are brutal. The world is alive with its own eco-system and random events (and weather), and there's more weapons and items. The characters are better written and voice acted and are far more interesting, the horses are a hell of a lot more fun to ride than GTA's cars were to drive, and the framerate is smoother and more consistent. The world doesn't have mindless drones roaming the streets as everyone in RDR has a schedule that they follow. Because of this, it doesn't cater to the gamer's demands (sometimes there will be nobody at the poker table or behind the counter at a store) which helps the world feel more alive, not so centered on the player, hence more immersive.
On top of that, the world is varied in its environments, and the economy is better balanced as money is harder to come by (at least until way later in the game), which gives incentive to hunt, gather, and go out and explore....which is very enjoyable and leads to a variety of dynamic encounters. The Dead Eye mechanic is a brilliant idea which is well implemented. The story, while still not the main draw for me as is the freedom, is much better and actually has me curious as to what's going to happen unlike GTA. I find John interesting, whereas with Niko I couldn't care less about what happened to him. And finally, there's NO PHONE- the best thing of all. I can't comment on the multiplayer as I played neither.
RDR is far and away a better game than GTA IV ever was. The only thing GTA has going for it is that it is more polished and less glitchy, and the setting, if that's your preference. RDR is what GTA IV should've been, and has fully restored my faith that R* still knows how to create the best open world sandbox games out there.

Its an opinion. I prefer GTAIV, but that doesn't mean I find to hard to believe that people prefer RDR. RDR is a fantastic game, but in my opinion, GTAIV is a little better.
Yeah, the cover and targetting system have been greatly improved in RDR which is great. And yeah, the world is alive but then so was Liberty City, and it had a day/night cycle and weather system too. As for the characters being more interesting, Im not sure I would agree. Yeah, I prefer John to Niko, but I think both games have their fair share of interesting and not-so-interesting characters.
I disagree about the horses though, I find driving cars in GTA to be a lot more fun, and the variety in transportation is greater too. NPCs in Liberty City have schedules too. For example, cruise around in the morning, and you will actually see people refilling the newspaper stands with todays newspaper.
The ecomony, yeah thats a really nice feature in RDR, something I would've loved to see in GTAIV. As for the mobile phone, I think im probably the only person who wasn't annoyed by it :P
Anyway, I prefer GTA just because Liberty city felt more magical than the setting in RDR does. There were honestly times when I was crusing through Liberty City at night with the radio blasting that actually gave me goosebumps.
To each their own. :)
My main problem with GTA was the lack of content that RDR in contrast has plenty of. I can't remember many side activities in GTA IV except going to clubs, bowling, etc, and most of those got old fairly quickly which was made even worse by getting calls every 20 minutes to hang out. There were many little things that added up to monotony. I'll be the first to admit it is a technical marvel, the attention to detail was astounding, but even in this aspect I feel R* San Diego has improved upon in RDR.
The reason I like the horses better is not entirely because they're horses, but because there's a wide open expanse of territory to use them in. While GTA had much more variety in its vehicles and the way they handled, driving in a city there was never really a feeling of freedom to be able to utilize them to their fullest potential. In RDR I feel I can stretch my legs. As for GTA's people having full day schedules, I don't think they did but could be mistaken. I disagree about the characters though, there wasn't one notable person I could find any reason to care for in IV. Don't know why....
I don't think GTA IV is a bad game by any measure, but I do believe almost everything that made it great has been improved upon and those things that brought it down were either removed or refined.
Btw: Nice sig. :P
@ Rekunta Nicely put. I still haven't tried RDR yet, but I will soon enough. Your words make me happy and want to try the game. GTA4 was good and all but it was very "same ol' same ol" in my opinion. Now if R* can add RPG elements to these types of games, I'd be really happy.xsubtownerx
Thanks. :) It really is a great game, and speakingas someone who really didn't enjoy GTA IV all that much, I'm surprised I'm enjoying RDR as much as I am. IMO, it's one of, if not, R*'s finest hours.
