What did goldeneye actually do other than split screen multiplayer?BodyElite

It was one of the first successful FPSs on a console. Other than Perfect Dark (which was developed by the same people who developed GoldenEye) it was the biggest FPS of its day probably.

Why does there always have to be one.skrat_01

This. Both games were essential for the development of the genre on consoles. You can't exclude either for the sake of some popularity contest which Halo will undoubtedly win.

Goldeneye. Dual wielding Crouching Corner leaning split screen MP Auto aim Vehicle sections I mean sure it wasn't perfect but really all Halo did was improve on it. I still find Goldeneye to be more enjoyable than CE too.

I would say Halo CE (for consoles). With it's introduction of dual analog support, 2 weapon carry system, regenerative health, dedicated melee/grenade button, and it's MP i would say more modern day shooters (consoles again) imitate this scheme more than any other console FPS of the past.

You make some good points but the corner leaning will get you killed in any game today.

Dual analog - Timesplitters

2 weapons - Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, some other less-known mods

Dedicated melee button - Duke Nukem 3D

Dedicated grenade button - Team Fortress

Regenerative health in the modern sense - Call of Duty (Halo 1 had regenerative shield)

And tell me what is special about it's MP? XBL online play first appeared in Halo 2

goldeneye ,

fpses exploded after goldeneye, -those saying halo better look through n64s library first and before hand

goldeneye was the first ever first person shooter to get 2 game of the year awards and become a million seller on consoles,

before it doom tried on snes, but failed to do so , ,

and goldeneye has such strong cult following that not only did we have goldeneye

we had perfect dark , timesplitters 1 2 and 3 pdxbla and the remake on the wii , all have similarities to the original goldeneye ,

then theres even a mod for halflife 2 so ya , pretty much goldeneye set a standard,

halo didnt do much to different it self from that formula, all they added was rechargable health ,

and online for consoles, thats the only areas id say halo helped in ,

other then that , goldeneye was the one that had the biggest affect on not just console fps but movie to game tie ins

wrong

2 weapons-goldeneye without cheats the following weapons could be dual weilded -pp7 pp7 silence dd44 klobb zmg 9mm throwing knives and in the jungle you can also hold a grenade launcher and rcp90 together , plus with the all guns cheat every gun nearly was dual weilded , and theres a trick to do exactly what you could do with that rcp90 and grenade l to other weapons

set buttons-dukenukem 3d

dual analog -timesplitters

map maker-timesplitters-akin to halo 3s forge

online halo 2 -i think

multiplayer -goldeneye

multiplayer with ai-duke nukem 64

coop -hexen 64 /dukenukem 64

legendary mode -goldeneye- had 007 mode which is the equivielent but you can change the settings so ya,

co op mission mode-perfect dark duke nukem 64 isnt mission based so i cant say that one was the first

counter op-i think perfect dark was the first may be the only where one player can be the bad guy and one player is the good guy

I would have to say COD 4 has to be up there with those. I believe that it has had a mopre profound effect on modern FPSs than both of those games.

Notice how I said console FPS and the choice was between Goldeneye and Halo, kind of like the OP says? Hell I'm a PC Gamer through and through and I probably played through those games before you did. No need to jump on people with out knowing the context they're relpying in, read first next time.

You made it look like Halo introduced these things. And how the hell did you play those games before I did? Did you have a time machine in the early 90's?

Goldeneye was influenced by Quake and Doom, and its influence was only to show console gamers that FPSs are a fun genre to play.Mrmccormo
This. Quite like Final Fantasy VII in that sense.

Timesplitters, bringing that dual analog control. SAGE_OF_FIRE

This. I don't get why so many belive Halo did anything special, Time Splitters, Goldeneye and Half Life did much more for console FPSes than Halo :S Halo was just another good IP. Oh and FPSes didn't boom after Halo because Halo was so revolutionary but because consoles got online compatibilities. FPSes were present on PCs several years before there was any XBox :S

Dual analog - Timesplitters

Always wondered about this one. Oni was developed by Bungie West exclusively for the PS2. Development started in 1999. Oni was released only a few months after Timeplitters. is it possible that both companies just had the same idea? If thats the case, then Bungie deserves at least some credit I think.

actually halo had a pretty big effect on ALL fps, sticky targeting on consoles, regening health, limitation on weapons carried... pre halo fps's were much different, golden eye was just a fun multiplayer, games like tribes/deus ex didn't really have an effect on fps's becasue the mechanics and awesomeness they presented didn't catch on with other games, even battle field and half life, actuallly halo can extend to shooters also...

Exclusively? It was developed for the PC first, and then was ported to PS2 by Rockstar Toronto. Great game btw.

Actually,Oni was originaly developed for the PC and the development for the PS2 started later,so it most certainly isn´t a PS2 exclusive(or built exclusively for the PS2).

I say Halo, because Halo did so well people were pumped for Halo 2, and because of Halo 2's popularity it helped MS really push Xbox Live's success, and this healthy start to XBL really streamlined online console gaming, which is pretty standard in games this generation. Though, Golden Eye was one of my favorite local multiplayer games back in the day.

Goldeneye because it showed FPS's can work and be popular on consoles, Halo did the same thing but years later so 1st in gets the recognition imo

so they made fps worse? gotcha.

No, the question is which fps had a bigger effect on console fps. That being said, if you look aroudn you will see that games nowadays "Clearly" are not like the games you mentioned. Those might be "Revolutionary" and all, but neither of them effect fps as much to what they are today. I ll have to say that halo effected alot the way fps are nowadays and then a halo effected call of duty, pretty much turned fps on consoles in what they are nowadays. Linear generic ironsights health regeneration shooters.
