Stuff like Mario, Call of duties, halos, and ratchet and clanks are great and a ton of fun. But when it comes to innovation not that much changes and this is kinda becoming the story of the 7th gen:( . 2010 looks to bring change however, we get a ton of great games for all systems so most likely everone will find something that satasfies them. Plus alot of games this year promise to show us innovation.

So Gamespot which game do you you believe will show gamers the most innovation this year.

okay ... A popular game that will show innovation- i think Mass Effect 2. ME1 seemed like a succesful step into making a shooter game that isnt a shooter game, a game that allows players to decide the type of fighter and determine the game's degree of strategy and careful planning, or brute force and quick combat ME2 though is not neccesarily choosing a totally new path for shooting rpgs but it is trying to perfect the type of game ME1 was trying to be. I think that is perfect, Mass Effect is just the type of prescripiton the gaming world needs to try and break from the norm. Mass Effect 2 will hopefully be proof that a game can have deep story, fantastic graphics, jaw dropping combat, and mind wrenching strategic moments all in one game. ME1 tried and was working its way there, lets hope ME2 can at least get even closer

Its very iffy to say modnation would have no innovation or not. I think it could go either way because I think media molecule is a good developer however the game looks dangerously close to Mario Kart. But if media molecule could did what they did with platforms to make a great orginial IP to Modnation then the power to them.

I say either ModNation Racers or Heavy Rain.

MNR, being developed by United Front Games (not Media Molecule, guys), does a good deal to be innovative in the cart racing genre. Customization of your driver and cart is something I don't remember seeing in any other games. Then of course the big selling point, an innovative real time track creator. I've used it (I'm in the beta) and it is surprisingly simple to use and VERY powerful. Plus, you can download other people's creations and tweak them. Then, if you decide to reupload them, the original author still gets credit. The ability to just download new characters, carts, and tracks at will does seem intriguing.

As for Heavy Rain, many will say "Indigo Prophecy already did it." Umm, it's the SAME developer. All signs from early previews seem to suggest that HR is going to elicit an emotional response like no other game you've played in recent history. They're already starting to describe it as more of an experience than a game. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully it turns out well.

As for others, I was looking forward to Alan Wake, but not I'm not so sure. It looks like it could be a thrilling new entry in the action adventure genre that could deal more in survival horror and be psychological unnerving. Sadly, the more I see the more it's looking like a standard third person action game. Hopfully it maintains the creepy atmosphere that it seems to have built up so far.

Red Dead Redemption will innovate the Wild Western genre and set the bar for open-world games.

Super Street Fighter IV will improve and innovate the online fighting community.

Alan Wake, Dead Rising, & Dead Space II will restore survival horror as gaming genre.

Definitely ModNation or Heavy Rain, so much creativity in those titles. If they succeed, they will likely usher in new features in games to come. As for them succeeding... thats another story, though I highly, highly doubt they will tank.

SPYDER0416

The thing about Heavy Rain is that Indigo Prophecy already happened and nobody else tried to copy it afterwards. Heavy Rain might be a bit more of a success, but if IP is any indication, it probably isn't going to be hugely influential either.

Also, they're both obscure titles exclusive to the current worst selling system, so I think they could potentially tank (even though they really shouldn't).

Back on topic, the most innovative game of the year is bound to be an indie title. Most of the big devs are just making sequels this year.

See, I keep hearing people saying this, but it's the same developer! Granted, yes, they've kind of done the idea before. But it was constrained by last gen technology. Other than Indigo Prophecy (which they made) there isn't really anything else like it.

Heavy Rain or Alan Wake probably. They're the only games I can think of that are doing something a little bit different.

Doubtful, Molyneux is all talk and never delievers, the last time he did anything innovative was when he worked at Bullfrog over a decade ago.

And people hype it because it's different when in reality it's not much different from anything in the adventure general, it's certainly the only nex-gen take on the genre I can think of but I can't help but think this game is a rental at best no matter how good the story is.

It seems like everything in gaming has already been done. It's going to be extremely difficult to come up with something truly revolutionary... Good thing games don't have to be innovative to be great though

This is very true. Hell, I'm amazed if Hollywood comes out with anything original these days. Much like the game industry they're all about sequels, movies based on books, movies based on games, and movies based on the hottest comic or graphic novel out these days. Each of these mediums thrives on one another.

I agree that Heavy Rain isn't all too innovative in terms of gameplay. What is innovative about the game, however, is the the developers have referred to it as an interactive movie, or something along those lines. Normally, adventure games like Phoenix Wright get hurt in reviews by being called "interactive novels," but if Capcom had advertised PW as an interactive novel rather than a video game as normal, then the criticism wouldn't hold much water. I think Heavy Rain is avoiding all those criticisms by simply being forthcoming in how uninteractive it is. It's a pretty choose your own adventure book. he problem is that people are seeing it as being innovative despite that choose your own adventures have been around for a while just because they haven't been on home consoles in God knows how long.

Well, last year it was most definitely silent hill.

This year I'm thinking (and I can't believe I'm actually saying this) red steel 2. It looks to be a whole new genre.

Obviously God of War 3, it will reinvent "sex in video games" by offering a massive orgy consisting of men, women and gnomes.
