Man, what to even say about these impending disasters?

FF7 is coming out EPISODICALLY (For no reason other than your money-don't be fooled)

Evidence: The Producer of FF7 openly lying in an interview how the game is too big for one download: http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/final-fantasy-vii-remake-episodic/

FF15 spent 11 years in development hell and it's finally going to die and go to heaven. The demos were horrendous, there are so many tie-ins, there is no way this game will bring pride to the franchise. I just want this game to fail so hard that it becomes a wakeup call.

These titles are so shameful and so terrible, I can't decide which one will be worse. Neither will be good, make no mistake. I see the island- it's clear.

The biggest disappointment with ff7 isn't even that they are gouging us, it's that they are changing the battle system.

That alone is reason for me to pick ff7

FFVII Remake will great. SE won't blow that. FFXV will be good at the least.

To the person whining about the combat unless it is Pokemon turn based combat does not appeal to the mainstream any more, myself included. I will tolerate it for a game like Persona 5, but I'd rather not.

Couldn't care less about it being episodic as long as it is good.

I don't get that with today's gamers. What happens when you're really getting into the game and then boom it's over. Then you have to wait month(s) for the next episode and so on, it kills the mood.

Whoever wants to play games like that deserves to be milked for all their wallets worth.

I don't care what the game it is or who's making it, as soon as i hear episodic i just forget about the game, like i did for a franchise i like in Hitman.

Can't see Final Fantasy 15 scoring more than a 5/10 to be honest.

I'm actually interested in FF7 remake once it's fully released :)

FF7 was not turn based. The battles dont flow in turns, so it is immediately disqualified.

Turn based not appealling to the mainstream? Then explain Why Civilization 6 has already sold over 1 million copies. Divinity: Original Sin was arguably the most successful successful of the kickstarter RPGs selling well over 1.2 million copies on steam alone (not bad for a game with minimal marketing). XCOM 2 sold over a million copies. Mario RPGs are still multimillion sellers. Persona 5 is poised to become another best seller. And Fire Emblem is selling millions. Turnbased is alive and well in the mainstream. It may not be quite as popular as ARPGs are, but it is far from dead in the mainstream.

And Turn Based combat is far superior anyways. Action RPGs, with a few exceptions, play like crap. RPGs excel at abstractions and manipulating variables in your favor. Action games are about tight combat. Action RPGs, due to the much higher pace, often fail at being abstract and manipulating variables often doesnt work since reflexes and button mashing is often a much easier, and ultimately viable path htan just trying to manipulate the field, oftentimes, due to the lack of menus and options you have, you often are not really able to manipulate the battle anyways, not having anything more than a stun and offensive spells. As Action games, the RPG elements completely mess up the balance, and movesets. Because progression has to be made, movesets usually start extremely limited at the start of the game, and because the higher emphasis on numbers, it never quite feels like I am beating down the enemy but just whittling down their healthbar. Something I never felt while playing bayonetta or Devil May Cry (I felt I executing a long as combo on them). Likewise, the addition of additional variables makes it nigh impossible to have a truly balanced experience. So the battles in fail at being the tight experience one would expect from an action game. The combination of these 2 genres dont really add anything unique either, so it doesnt exactly ahve anything going for it.

In short, action RPGs suck.

Edit: Of course, this does not mean FF7 had good combat or anything. ATB is a mess, and the combat really is nothing more than using your best offensive attack when high on health and healing when low on health. So easy, I could program a bot in an hour to play the game for me.

I'm not sure how they can screw up a remake of FF7. That E3 for FF15 completely turned me off for it. So I'm gonna go with FF15 being the one that crashes and burns.

Ff15 will be a let down if they've continued with trying to appeal to everyone. 7 should be ok I just hope the time between episodes isn't more than 3 months .

All in all final fantasy needs a total reboot back to its core or it needs to die. They don't need a million features it just needs to be well made . Nice big map , interesting foes , dangerous dungeons and a story that is not convulsing from trying to do too much.

@Shmiity:

Correction, Final Fantasy VII Remake is following the structure of Final Fantasy XIII. If you remember Final Fantasy XIII's story arc, we had 3 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT games. And Final Fantasy VII's complete story does have 3 important timelines. Crisis Core, the actual Final Fantasy VII story, and Advent Children's aftermath. That could make for a fascinating trilogy!

Both games are gonna be good.. latest previews of FFXV are sounding great. FFVII Remake is coming out in full length games like FFXIII, episodic was a dumb way for Square to describe it.

Listen man, I'm not mad at you- I'm just concerned that you are not doing your research and don't understand what Square Enix is doing to you, the industry, and their own franchise. The writing is on the wall. Its an episodic game that just wants your money and a 12 years of development disaster with movie tie-ins. Just understand what's happening. I would love if every game ever was excellent and fulfilling- this just isn't the case.

Just understand what you're supporting. FF7 came out in 1997 on CD. COMPACT. DISC. We've all played it, we all know what happens, there is no hype, no suspense, the game is 20 years old. Square is fooling you into accepting that the game is "too big for one disc" and needs to be sold 3 times. That's a real quote. Let me dig up the article. Producer said the GAME THAT IS 20 YEARS OLD ON PS1 IS TOO BIG FOR 1 DISC RELEASE (err just use 2?) OR 1 DIGITAL DOWNLOAD. He's just openly lying to you, man. Just please, listen to me. I'm trying to help you guys. I'm not mad at you- just look at what's happening.

Sure Hitman will be released as a full game someday, and who knows i might buy it, but my excitement for it has long since past.

Listen, I'm not mad at you, but you are not paying attention to what's happening, here. FF7 is being released for no good reason other than to sap money from you. It came out already. 20 years ago. Now they want to charge you 60$ x 3 to play a game you've already played. FF15 has so many tie-ins, movies, merch, just to break even from development hell. The demos were awful. What are you not understanding? Square is playing YOU, man. There are many, many good reasons to hate on these games. I sincerely want every game to be good- but that doesn't happen. How can you not see the island? It's right there in front of you.

I think you're the one that needs to do your research. FF7 remake is a re-imagining as well as a remake you won't be playing the game you played 20 years ago as you claimed in another post. The episodic thing absolutely blows but if it turns out to be a full game for each 'episode' that feels right I'll be okay with that. Calling them episodes instead of games is probably the worst thing they could have done. I'll just wait and see reviews and player reactions before I buy, like always.

FFXV might be a fantastic game, it might be the worst game ever made. I don't know yet, either do you, that's why it's plain stupid to declare it to be rubbish before playing even a second of it. Regardless of the shady practices surrounding it, the game will live or die on its own merits just like any other game and we'll know the truth of it after it launches. Nobody will be fooled or conned by anybody unless they're stupid and pre-order.

@Shmiity:

And recently they stated that they were following the build for Final Fantasy XIII saga. A saga that was divided into 3 games. And such, they stated that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be in 3 full length games. The end of each disc doesn't have nearly enough story to be considered a full game.

I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since 7 and I remember that one fondly. The idea of getting a proper remake sounds good on paper but I'm worried they'll blow it. This episodic thing sounds awful and I don't even understand how it's going to work or what it's all going to cost. I'll be skipping it most likely. Final Fantasy 15 looks like a game that is not for me. The main character is too cringey for me to handle. All the main characters seem awful. It would take a lot from this game just to get me to forget about how much I hate the look of the characters. I hope that some of you will love these games but I don't believe they are meant for me. I'm much more excited for Persona5. That is to say I'm mildly excited for it but it seems like a lot in comparison to Final Fantasy.

I think most are going to be more disappointed with RE:VII.

Yes, the game is going to look and sound beautiful, and have a much better translation than the original but I have a feeling that that's where the good for this will end.

  • The battle system is going to be too different for most fans of the original version. I personally don't mind it been different, as I've found myself growing tired of turn-based RPG's in recent years (aside from Pokemon), and do prefer the action-RPG style of Kingdom Hearts, which RE:VII seems to be going for. Yet, I think I'm in the minority and fully understand why.
The turn-based combat was a big part of FFVII, removing that changes the whole feel of the game, big fights such as the final battle are going to be much different here. Big "events" in the battles like the 2 minute casting of Super Nova, just aren't going to be able to have the same impact. It'll also have a big effect on the Materia system, which was one of the best battle systems the FF series has ever had.

  • I'm also worried about how they'll handle the characters. Cloud was a normal guy in FFVII, and had a wide range of emotions, he got mad and sad at times, but other times he was happy, he joked around, he flirted, he wasn't forced into a single stereotype. Yet in the "Compilation of FFVII", he was changed into a whiny emo teen. I'm really worried that's the route they're going to take him in RE:VII.

  • My final worry is the pacing of the game. We know the plan is that it's going to be "episodic", but FFVII isn't really long enough, at least by RPG standards to make it into multiple games. Which means they're going to have to expand upon it, add extra elements to the game. Now, there is certainly a lot of potential in that idea, they could bring in elements Crisis Core and other parts of the Compilation, as well as greatly expand on both Yuffie and Vincent's roles in the story but they have to do it carefully so as not to ruin the original story. I don't know if Square-Enix can handle that.

Don't know but I got FFXV preordered and will do the same for FFVII Remake.

I know preordering is a waste a large amount of the time, but eh I know I'll like it. I have yet to buy anything I haven't enjoyed that way.

FF VII REMAKE 2017 BEST REMAKE IN DECADES

But SE mutilates games nowadays. Look at what happened to Hitman 2016 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

I expect both of them to be guilty of the too biggest problems with JRPGs these days.

  • AI controlled partners (Huge downgrade from most older games in the genre)
  • Weird, needlessly arbitrary rules to the battle systems

I actually believe that both Dragon Quest and Pokemon are more forward than most modern JRPGs in a strange way because they haven't changed much. They went the refinement route. Most other series went sideways and backwards.

No idea. I'm more excited for Final Fantasy XV though.

@Chutebox: that's why I think they will both suck.

Since ffxii they have adopted and expanded upon an awkward battle system that is not turn based but not really action based either.

Ffvii not being turn based is a mistake

At least it's based on a good game- you're right about that.

I will withhold judgement on both.. people complaining about the combat systems... boggles my mind while praising Witcher 3 sometimes in the same conversation... Witcher 3 combat is TERRIBLE... hell the whole series has had some of the worst combat/character building in any RPG I have ever played. There are other elements that make games great... Demo's were too short to give any real idea, the one was a tutorial for gods sake.

FF7? depends on how in depth it all is... its easy to say "they're milking us" .. its not about fitting on one disc ffs. Development times are much larger now, everything is far more complicated... and standards for graphics are ridiculously high now. Compared to block arm ff7 with friggin JPEG environments (exaggeration).... how many RPG's are top of the line graphics/feature wise that have campaigns as long/varied as the older FF games? not many... Elderscrolls is heavily guilty of repetitive enviroments and random generation.

FF15's combat and the fact that there are 4 of you has far more potential than the Witcher's frankenstien "We wanna be dark souls on a D&D rpg engine" travesty.
