Quite a lot of devs like to show their games of as soon as they are able to produce a visual representation. So what happens is you get alot of end products that are sometimes, greatly different from what was originall shown. So what games can you think of? Do you think the changes made after were better, or worse? Il start us off with 2 negatives

Final Fantasy X - original concept http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72vckLXI7x4

Its no secret that FFX is my favourite game, but watching what it was originally going to be makes me wish we recieved this instead. Firstly, the graphics look alot better than what was in X. Clothes move as he runs and hair sways. I also find Tidus' design alot more appealing. It seems that Square were also planning on having some sort of online functionality. It would have been amazing but judging by the video, i think it would have been similar to the Shenmue Passprt (which was amazing).

Halo 2 - E3 2003 demo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb9o-Ce_hYM Crowd reaction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax1nvd8DF1Q

Not really much that can be said here. It really was all round better. The graphics look like early 360 game and it captures the Halo 1 atmosphere pretty well.

Anyway what about you guys?

Yeah, if Shattered Memories ends up being the more innovative game it honestly wouldn't surprise me that much. It's certainly more close to twin peaks than alan wake is already. I swear David Lynch wrote shattered memories...

I find that the original The Two Thrones was better that what Ubisoft released at the end. It seemed more darker. I'll post a video when I find one.

Edit: Found it; here.

Motorstorm, the pre render footage looked stunning with a cockpit view and mud flying all over the winshield. I guess the concept didn't change much but it is like the crysis concept.

Quake.

Quake was orginally designed as a melee weapon based, first person, open/hub world, fantasy game. The design was totally changed to fit with the new tech 2 engine Carmack built, and it brought about Romero leaving/getting fired from id Software.

Initially, it was suppoed to be a fighting game like this.

Instead, we got this

God, I wish they'd make Killer Instinct 3

I prefer the Silent Hill style one, and dont call it linear cause this game could just possibly refresh the horror genre withits strong story line :)

If you think the Halo 2 video is a drastic change, you should check out the original Halo video for when it was still being developed for PC.

Thank you, i wish i still had a copy of an old gamming magazine that first featured crysis. It talked about how amazing the AI would be, like they would track your movements through the forrest by following bent grass and other crazy stuff like that. Also you would stumble apon random battles, and choose to help or evade, and if you helped it would benifit you, or maybe not. Also you could explore and find different weapons, and even find aliens attacking soliders before you ever reach the alien ship. One example of this was finding a hunter randomly in a forrest and fighting it. Yeah none of that made it into the game, which is why it was a dissapointing for me. Devs do this all the time, things change during dev time so much, thats why its not always smart to buy into early hype for a game.

Zelda: Wind Waker. I remember there being a realistic looking teaser, but was replaced with a cartoony game. Fantastic game though.

I'll also add Star Fox Adventures. It was going to be Dinosaur Planet on the N64, but no, it changed to a Zelda clone with the commander of the Star Fox Team. Great game, nonetheless.

I agree with the guy above you. Alan Wake footage from 2006 was open world. I'm not really sure what they have done with it. It doesn't help they have only showed about 1 level.

Hm? It's been confirmed that it is linear progression through a level at night and open world during the day.

I'd never seen that footage before, but upon seeing it I immediately have to agree. Had I gotten that product, I perhaps would have been more inclined to actually enjoy Resident Evil 4.

eh, I haven't heard much about it besides the demo they keep showing. First at e3, then at tgs 09. The lame resident evil 4 3rd person action horror game. I also thought that they got rid of the sandbox elements (did they?). Actually it is confirmed.

They didn't get rid of open world. They never claimed it to be a "detective" game.

id losing Romero was a huge blow to their games, imo. As it was to Romero. Daikatana, anyone? But I didn't know that about Quake. There's a decision that significantly changed the industry., when you think about it.

I don't get what everyone is complaining about. "Oh noez!!1!! Alan Wake won't be teh sandbox!!11! Oh noez!1!!!" Big deal. Why is there this trend today that everything has to be a sandbox experience anyways?

Yeh, it's not like GTA anymore, it's more like Zelda. During the day it's open, and you can explore Bright Falls. During the night it's a more focused experience. Most of this confusion came from the mistranslation of Finnish gaming magazine Pelaaja. Thomas Puha, the creative director of the magazine, later went on to correct this, saying, "There is still an open world, but due to the story the action is more directed to tell the story better as you'd expect from Remedy."

Halo 2 was initially designed to be the end, but Bungie's rather lazyness with the single player kind of forced the rush job that was Halo 2. I wonder where the series would be today without that screw up on the campaign.

kameo: originally it was meant to be an action adventure/ strategy hybrid

you could transform into monsters but you could also summon monsters and leave them to their battles, it was going to be a mix of Legend of Zelda and Sacrifice (google it)
