Puhlease.  Blu-Ray & HD-DVD are bascially the same when it comes to picture quality, it's the movie transfers that determine how good they look, not the hardware.

Who cares when will they make a player that can play both thats not $1200.  I just really want to watch movies in HD but dont want to buy a player that might not win the system war.  (plus i cant afford to buy both)Goeben

It's a tie, they both lose.  DVD still has years left in it.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are identical in terms of Picture Quality and Sound Quality. It's all about the source material and the hardware used. Reviews of the two formats during their respective launches gave a nod to HD-DVD because the BD player used was not as good. Since then several BD players have hit the market, including the PS3 and I have not seen a single review that shows one being better than the other. Both are the exact same price at retail (between 20 and 30 USD), with more HD-DVDs costing in the $30 and up range because of the DVD/HD-DVD combo discs. I've seen BD's for 35 and 40 USD at some stores, but you can easily find them for less than 30 several other places.

Blu-ray has a higher storage capacity, and has more studio support. Columbia, MGM, Sony, Fox, Disney, all support Blu-ray exclusively. Universal and Weinstien support HDDVD exclusively. Warner Brothers, New Line and Paramount support both. 

No one can pick the winner right now and there won't be a definative victor for years. If you're gonna buy one, you need to buy the other right now, it's the only way to avoid getting stuck with the loser, or not being able to get the movies you want. As for a combo player, for $1200 dollars you can have a PS3 and a 360 with the HD-DVD add on, and then you have two prime consoles to boot.

If I had to speculate, I'd say the PS3, studio support, and lack of expensive HD-DVD/DVD combo discs would make BD-ROM the likely candidate for format war winner. I have twice as many BDs as HD-DVDs only because there haven't been any notable exclusive HD-DVD releases yet this year.

Sorry but King Kong is the best HD movie in existance.

Not so much any more. I have seen MPEG2 BDs that look as good, if not better than MPEG4 and VC-1 HD-DVDs. Also if it comes out on both formats (which is the only true way to compare them), it's usually the same codec.
