blu-ray has ALOT more movies coming out for it than HD-DVD. for example, blu-ray has more movies coming out this month than HD-DVD has for the entire year.

Puhlease.  Blu-Ray & HD-DVD are bascially the same when it comes to picture quality, it's the movie transfers that determine how good they look, not the hardware.

while Blu-Ray has more movies and appears to be doing better, most people aggree that HD--DVD has a better picture overall and has less restrictions regarding playback.

Look the situation is this. HD DVD had better picture quality because of its codec, VC-1. Now alot of the new Blu ray movies are using this codec as wel as another codec that is just as good. The huge difference is the movie studio support. Blu ray has the most movie studio support as well as the most new movies coming out. You have great movies like the Prestiege, Casino Roayale, and all the disney and SOny movies that will only be on Blu ray. The truth is a combo machine is gonna be a waste of money because there will be a winner soon and the way sales are going, blu ray will be the victor.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have the same picture quality.

Standalone hd-dvd players are cost less than a standalone blu-ray player, the exception is the PS3, PS3 is the cheapest HD movie player on the market.

Blu-ray has 90% of Hollywood studios support, thus has a LOT more movies coming out than hd-dvd.

My local Best Buy had a BR and HDDVD player. One on each side of the isle. They both looked same to me. Both running on 42' LCD tv's.

It's a tie, they both lose.  DVD still has years left in it.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are identical in terms of Picture Quality and Sound Quality. It's all about the source material and the hardware used. Reviews of the two formats during their respective launches gave a nod to HD-DVD because the BD player used was not as good. Since then several BD players have hit the market, including the PS3 and I have not seen a single review that shows one being better than the other. You can check http://www.highdefdigest.com/ and see for yourself.

Both are the exact same price at retail (between 20 and 30 USD), with more HD-DVDs costing in the $30 and up range because of the DVD/HD-DVD combo discs. I've seen BD's for 35 and 40 USD at some stores, but you can easily find them for less than 30 several other places.

Blu-ray has a higher storage capacity, and has more studio support. Columbia, MGM, Sony, Fox, Disney, all support Blu-ray exclusively. Universal and Weinstien support HDDVD exclusively. Warner Brothers, New Line and Paramount support both.

No one can pick the winner right now and there won't be a definative victor for years. If you're gonna buy one, you need to buy the other right now, it's the only way to avoid getting stuck with the loser, or not being able to get the movies you want. As for a combo player, for $1200 dollars you can have a PS3 and a 360 with the HD-DVD add on, and then you have two prime consoles to boot.

If I had to speculate, I'd say the PS3, studio support, and lack of expensive HD-DVD/DVD combo discs would make BD-ROM the likely candidate for format war winner. I have twice as many BDs as HD-DVDs only because there haven't been any notable exclusive HD-DVD releases yet this year.

2nd
"Figures from the US show thatBlu-Ray movie sales are outselling HD-DVD by a factor of 2:1 since the launch of PS3 and we have similar sales expectations," he said, before adding, "In addition to the games and movie growth we expect to see a large increase in the sales of 1080p TVs to make full use of the PS3's superior resolution."

rockydog:

Not so much any more. I have seen MPEG2 BDs that look as good, if not better than MPEG4 and VC-1 HD-DVDs. Also if it comes out on both formats (which is the only true way to compare them), it's usually the same codec.

not that mutch of a lie, more like in the "old" days when they still used the MPEG2 codec. now they both use the same codec it realy isn't a picture difference.
