One problem with this is talk about features. This should be a conversation about the gaming, because that's really all that matters in multiplayer.

This is why I like XBL. Microsoft's approach focuses on the whole gaming experience, not just within the game proper. According to MS's philosophy, gaming starts the moment you turn on your console. And it doesn't end when you turn it off.
I don't boot directly into a game anymore. I'll turn on my console, and even before I actually play a game, I'll check my messages and see what the people on my friends list are doing. I'll go check out what's on the Community Playdate or see what's on tap on the Community Calendar. Or maybe I'll check out the Spotlight section or Inside Xbox to see any cool new game videos or demos that have been released since I last logged on. These, by the way, are much more accessible than what's available on PSN... but that's a discussion for another time.
And this is already 15-20 minutes before I'm actually playing a game.
More often than not, I'll get an invite from a friend to play a game. What about after I turn off my console? I can check messages and see what my friends are doing through Xbox.com or stay in touch with them via MSN Messenger. Pretty soon, connectivity will be broadened even further with direct connectivity with Facebook and Twitter.
All of this is related to gaming although not in a game. Still useful. Still relevant to gaming.
