PS 3.
Well?
PS2 > PS4 > PS3 > PS1.
PS3 is kind of a janky mess that I love despite its flaws. Has a solid (but honestly not that special) library. Lots of gems, but I've found lots of gems on every system I've owned except the OG XBox which was largely redundant with my PC.
PS4 edges PS3 out because what it has for games so far is great and as long as they keep coming it'll "get there", while the hardware and software are SOOOOO much better and functional.
And sitting at the distant top... the PS2 of course
BC PS3. Any other answer is wrong.
Definitely the correct answer, but also a bit of a disingenuous answer to a thread like this.
But yeah, my OG PS3 was by far the single best gaming machine I've owned aside from a PC. I miss that thing. :(

Well, I guess if we can't throw BC into the mix then I'm gonna have to go with PS4 since it has both its own unique lineup of games while also having having most of the best PS3 exclusives and 7th generation multiplats ported to it. PS2 is only superior to the PS3/PS4 in terms of JRPG's, but when it comes to just about every other genre the better games are on both the PS3 and PS4.
Hard to decide between the PS1 or the PS2 for me. The original PS was a great time for me, I was in my early 20s doing all of the things you do at that age with your friends and gaming was a big part of that.
The PS2 had better more refined games particularly the racing genre but I was getting older and life was different by then with kids taking up most of the time so although I enjoyed it I have greater fondness I suppose for the PS1 era.
ps3 hand downs.....the ps3 could do 720 games and it was rated best media streamer ever on every HDTV site...beat even pc on this ...
could act as home media server...and really do so much at a time when so much was asked of it.
the PS4 is great now but when the ps3 was out there was nothing like it ......blu ray player ...HD media experience....it just did everything ...
a lot of HDTV sites talked about HTPC a lot and even about Microsoft HD software they abandon in PC and as much as some liked to make there on in the end the ps3 was even rated as good as pc or better in home media server.
this was a time when there was lots of issues with drivers or hardware conflicts or lack of cpu power or too much cpu use on streaming in a pc that made it a nitemare...the ps3 solve all that....today any decent TV can stream flawless but not so back then.....
it was invented to be a multi media master and it was.....
today even ARM chips do a great job of this in high end TV but right up till the ps4 came out HDTV people and alike would test everything and allways found issues with laptop or pc streaming....
so as nice as the PS4 is hand down the PS3 reinvented HD universe.....there was nothing like it at any price.

How is that even possible when PS2 had a HUGE thriving AA market on top of getting a huge amount of exclusives?
PS3 out of like a handful games has a sh*t ton of cooker cutter games and not much experimentation.
The PS4 and the Xbox One are pretty much the same console minus a few games and Sony consoles post-PS2 got a ton more "bro" oriented meaning a lot of quirky and unique games no longer get made anymore.
The PS2 is home to 1000s of unique retail games and it created a good majority of IPs unlike the PS4/ and to an extent the 3.
PS4 is like this, FPS, FPS, FPS, TPS, Remaster, FPS, AC, 2K, Madden.
No AA market or any of the like, inb4 early accessed 8 bit indies or walking sims though.
PS3 started the decline of the variety Sony consoles used to have and PS4 is only continuing it.
One could have a PC and PS2 and have TWO totally different experiences, with the PS4 a gaming PC makes it mostly redundant.
PS2>>PSOne>>PS3>>>PS4

PS4 has indies which balances out all the other kinds of games that gets released on the console. Its like people don't want to count indies into the mix.
The PS2 is a great console, but its redundant now that most of the best PS2 games have been ported to the PS3.
As far as the PS1 is concerned, while it was revolutionary for its time, most games just don't hold up all that well now. Outside games like Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3, Doom and Destruction Derby I rarely turn on my PS1. And again, most of the best PS1 games were ported to the PS3 as well.

I'm judging them more from a "in there time period" standpoint.
During the PS2s gen most of its games were exclusive and even so the PS2 still has a crapton of obscure titles that get overlooked just due to sheer volume.
Indies are a cool but they are no where near what the AA market is/was like companies like EA, Capcom, Konami, Ubi, THQ, etc were AA companies and 95% of indies aren't even remotely on their level from a content/gameplay standpoint.
PS1 definitely didn't age well though (aged better than the N64), at least its 3D games didn't.

Yes, PS2 was great for its time and is still a very good system, but the PS3 is the better system.
- Most of the best PS2 games were either straight ported or remastered for the PS3
- PS3 got superior iterations of franchises found on the PS2 (e.g. God of War, KillZone, GTA).
- PS3 gave us some of the greatest 1st party franchises Sony has ever made such as Uncharted and The Last of Us.

Bruh...
PS3 is considered to be one of the worst Playstation for good reason.
Yeah, a lot of the major PS2 games were ported over or remastered which still does not defeat the fact many of its titles are ONLY on it.
PS3 was a multiplat machine with some exclusives (name some top tier exclusives on it, plox) and in all honesty the only good Uncharted game was 2.
PS3 lacked heavily in what made the PS2 revered, tons and tons of exclusives many of which once again have not been ported and top of that it has plenty of those arcadey games that don't get made anymore.
PS3 was a bro focused console with too many shooters/realistic games and not enough variety on the creative side of things, which was only worsened by rising dev costs.
San Andreas is arguably as good as GTA found on the PS3 (I know its been ported).
PS2 was Sony's exclusives at its peak, from a 1st and 3rd party standpoint, the PS3 did not have that kind of support.
Sony was focused on catching that Wii money and movie games like Until Dawn rather than focusing on what made the PS2 so highly praised, core games in many different genres with much higher than indie budgets.
PS3 took place in an era of homogenization, the PSOne and PS2 took place in an era where companies were actually willing to take risks and where Japan actually existed.

It is not considered one of the worst Playstation systems. The only thing people didn't like about the PS3 initially was its price tag and lack of truly killer apps, but that changed two yrs into the systems lifespan. The damn thing sold 80 million units, yes that's a far cry from the PS2's 150 million units, but last generation Sony saw true competition from Microsoft with the 360 so the PS2's user base was divided 50/50.
Make a list of great PS2 exclusives that were either not ported or saw superior iterations released on the PS3.

I love how you mentioned sales, I could careless about the PS2s 150 Million sales. Hell, I like the Dreamcast, Xbox, and Gamecube more. Given your logic on sales the Wii must be amazing, right?
Make me a list of good exclusive PS3 games during it's gen and then I'll take the time to compile the list.
The PS3 list should be much shorter which is why I'm asking that you go first.

The Wii's sales has nothing to do with the Playstation 3 as the majority Playstation 3's sales wasn't relied on some kind of gimmick/fad.
We are talking exclusives that can't be played on anything other than the PS3 right? Which means you'd have to come up with a list of the PS2 exclusives that can only be played on a PS2 or BC PS3.
PS3 exclusives I can remember off the top of my head.
Uncharted 1 -3, TLOU, God of War 3 - Ascension, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Metal Gear Solid 4, LBP 1 - 2, Demon's Souls, Infamous 1 - 2, Resistance 1 - 2, Killzone 2 -3 and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction.
PS3 FAT, honestly there is no other objective better answer, even compared to PS4, PS3 was better in a lot of ways with free online being one of the first of these that come to mind.
FULL and complete PS2/PS1 compatibility seals the deal before we even start to talk about ground up PS3 games.

Yep, even PS3's without full PS2 BC is still the better console since most of the best PS2 games were either straight ported or remastered for the PS3 anyways.

The PlayStation 3.
-The launch window models play psx and ps2 games.
-All models play psx games.
-This of psn games, old arcade games, and downloadable psx and ps2 games.
-The best controller options. From various pad models to high quality fightsticks and racing wheels.
-Hdmi output AND analog component output. The latter being important if you want to set up a legit home-style arcade.
Even if the "right" answer in this question can easily be PS2 for so many reasons like great and diverse exclusive/time exclusive library , record sales , legacy , alive even after 10 years when its official cycle ended after 5 ill go with original PS.
Why i go with original PS , im nuts ?
The strongest reason i go with PS is the fact that PS showed the way to PS2. Hype and anticipation build up because of PSs succession. Fanbase build up because of PS. Its was PS huge success that made PS2 even bigger !
And above all , what original PS achieved that noone else ever did before is the fact that it did amazing sales and had amazing exclusive/Time exclusive library for its time WHILE WAS A NEWCOMER with ZERO fanbase while at the same time it had to compete vs the 2 most successful console companies out there that they had already a huge fanbase build up , exclusive games everyone knew and loved already etc , with SNES/Genesis ( and not only ). And not only won under such circumstances both competitors sales wise but library wise too.
PS to me is a winner easily even if PS2 is very very close second just because i think it was PS that showed the way to PS2 and is the strongest reason why PS2 had such huge success.
PS1 by far. It was revolutionary at the time and gave birth to many of gaming's greatest franchises.
PS3 FAT, honestly there is no other objective better answer, even compared to PS4, PS3 was better in a lot of ways with free online being one of the first of these that come to mind.

Agreed. Most people aren't taking in to account multiplats either. PS3 has more high quality multiplats than PS2 ever did. PS2 had better exclusives, but when you factor in entire libraries, PS3 wins.
Technically the ps3. It can fully play ps1 and ps3 games. And most good ps2 games either have hd ports to the ps3 or can be bought in the store.
PS3 (slim 120GB) - it can play PS1 games and pretty much a well rounded multimedia game unit. I didn't care if it lost PS2 b/c feature simple because the PS2 was my least favorite of Gen 6. I preferred the GC/Xbox.
I still preferred my XBOX 360 over it for multiplats/exclusives/controllers/online.
I've installed 1TB HDD a few years ago, so it's pretty much my Epix Download movie player. I still play a few PS3 games on it as well. Very impressive machine out of all the PS consoles. In my opinion.
Thinking of purchasing a PS3 Super Slim soon at some point.

Best, Playstation 2. Worst, Playstation 3. Its architecture was a nightmare for multiplatform devs.
PS3's CELL was conceptually based from PS2's EE.
PS2's EE includes the following
For PS3, IBM/Sony/Toshiba attempted to design year 2005 version of PS2 but wasn't keeping pace with ATI/NVIDIA GpGPU design evolution i.e. super wide MIMD vector units with thousands of registers and mega-hyperthreading.
PS2's compute approach is similar to Nintendo's N64 MIPS based graphics processor design and it was was design by a team from SGI which later founded ArtX and it was taken over by ATI.
ATI Xenos was the first unified shader design with decoupled instruction processing and data fetch operations i.e. capable to set aside instructions (sleep state) has not completed it's data fetch operations and run unrelated ready state instructions. ATI/NVIDIA GpGPU employs very heavy CISC (e.g. fix function units for complex and repeated workloads, instruction compression, instruction combo) and RISC concepts(e.g. fix size instructions, plenty of registers, single cycle throughput instructions as much as possible).
ATI/NVIDIA GpGPU symbolize the extreme ends of CISC and RISC concepts. Modern X86 CPU also has both CISC and RISC hybrid design concepts.
PS2 > PS3 > PS1 / PS4
PS1 has almost nothing that I care about except for the Crash series.
The PS2 probably had a more impressive exclusive lineup in its first year - year and a half then PS4 has amassed in nearly 3 years. People like to shit on the PS3 for its its lack of games in its first year, but it gave us Uncharted, Ratchet, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword , Motorstorm , and Resistance, which is pretty respectable imo. Not to mention that the PS4's/ Xbone multiplat library is also kinda meh.
