I cant decide :S
FF9 is the best. It's not the most innovative, but its elements come together better than any other game in the series and its characters are extremely loveable (Vivi FTW). Not to mention that it actually uses humor to very good effect.
I would rank them like this:
1. FF9
2. FF10
3. FF6
4. FF12
5. FF7
6. FF8
7. FF4
8. FF5
9. FF10-2
10. FF13
I haven't played FF1 through 3 (NES), FF11, FF13-2, or FF14.
My favorites in order, I didn't number the spinoffs, but they are included as well.
Tactics
1. IX
Dissidia 012
2. VI
3. V
Crisis Core
4. XIV
5. VIII
Chocobo's Dungeon
6. III
Dimensions
7. IV
8. I Anniversary Edition
Theatrhythm
9. XIII-2
10. VII
11. XIII
I think this (and the post above you) is the first time I've seen somebody rank FF5 so high.
It's understandable tho. Gameplay-wise it's one of the absolute best in the series; the jobs system is fucking excellent. But it's story is so throwaway, which is why I don't rank it that high relative to other FFs.

Yeah the story is atrocious by videogame/final fantasy/jrpg standards, but the combat system is great. Other than some 90s era game design drawbacks, that's one of the few older FF games I can go back to and make it through to the end before boredom hits.
@GreySeal9: @jg4xchamp: yes, the job systems in Final Fantasy V, Tactics, III, and Dimensions are all magnificent. I wish Square would make a console single-player game bringing it back... I guess FFXIIILR will be the closest we'll get to it. :/

It actually has some pretty decent dungeon design for a RPG of that era as well.
Though there are many things I better about modern FF games, I like how quick the combat system is in games like FF5. All the flashy shit in the later entries really slowed things down.

Apparently Braverly Default has a jobs system similar to FF5.

Excellent choices, final fantasy ix is also my fav final fantasy game.. infact it's my most favorite game ever :P
Zidane and garnet are just soo cute together <3
Zidane is the best lead in the series by far. After the douchiness of Squall, Zidane was such a breath of fresh air. Honestly, I think Amarant is the only character in FF9 I don't particularly care for. It's just such a charming cast.
@Sweenix: It's the only FF game that I couldn't bare myself to finnish. i just felt depressed by the mega-cartoony look of it, along with the tailed zidane, set to kidnap a princess from the get-go. The game is awful.
You do know final fantasy ix is the highest rated final fantasy game ever (Metacritic) and second highest on game rankings
Despite how you feel towards the art style, it's an un conceivable fact that final fantasy 9 is better then 8
1.Final Fantasy 7 (although 8 and 9 have aged much better)
2.Final Fantasy 9
3.Final Fantasy 8
4.Final Fantasy 13 series
5.Final Fantasy 12
Crisis Core is the best spin off but i hear Type-0 is better, localize that shit Square Enix.
VIII is the worst Squaresoft era game I have ever played.
VI > IX = IV = Chrono Trigger > VII > V > All. I really wouldn't recommend any other main series FF games.
FF14 is a lackluster MMO for anyone who's played WoW or Everquest.
@Sweenix: The moment you let reviewers dictate which games you prefer, is when you stop being a gamer. Personally I couldn't stand FFIX, that is my opinion and I'm entitled to it.
I'm not letting reviews change my opinion, and i know everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I'm just saying, you didn't give a valid reason towards your dislike for the game, If the cartoony art style is the only fault of the game, then you missed out on finishing a master piece.

this has become number 1 excuse lately around here, reviews and scores are the most "objective" way to qualify a game, in that aspect FF Ix qualifies as the better game, you may or may not agree with that and as you said you are entitled to your opinion but then don't come arguing x game is better than y when its factually not and is only your opinion and not fact.
Ofcourse you make a shitty poll to be a troll. I knew something was up. Anyway, not a big fan of FF. It's always abnormal to me and down right bat shit crazy in some cases (FFVIII) wen someone praises the stories in these games, though i'll leave that for another day.
But, there is one exception. Final Fantasy 6. Crisp pacing, beautiful sprites, fast combat and a really enjoyable game. Just such a God damn fun game, and a miracle that even though there are random encounters there's no need for grinding at all.
Actually, i love 16bit JRPGs the most out of any generation. They're incredibly easy to get into and they're easy to finish in less than a weekend. There's no shitty art style, no horrible voice acting, the plots are usually charming as hell and just plain fun with no fucked up convoluted plot holes and filler, 16bit sprites have an ageless look and no loading times. They're just perfect adventures to play wen you wanna have a good time. SNES >>>
I couldn't get into Final Fantasy 9 because the combat system was excruciatingly slow. Combine that with how there's a little loading time every time there's a random encounter, and yeah..

No they're not, they are literally numbers pulled out of the ass. It's baffling and sad wen someone thinks that they're some sort of accurate numerical date.
It is impossible to quantify the quality of a game, apart from the mechanics. Everything els is subjective, and each opinion, if honest, is absolute fact for the holder of said opinion. Just because a bunch of people have different opinions, none of those opinions, if honest, are anything els than completely equal in value and importance.
This is in the context of video gaming, obviously.
Out of the worst I've played, possibly XI. XIV was a bit shit too. Not bad games though, just shit MMOs. Particularly because of the way they control. The whole JRPG style control thing doesn't give fluidity or flow to the gameplay like most MMOs do. They were also very very instanced which I fucking hate in MMOs these days. All of them seem to do it these days. WoW is 10 years old and most devs still can't create massive sprawling continents which host thousands of players at once with seemless interraction.
Single player wise I've only played 5, 6 and 13-2 briefly, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13 I finished. Out of those from the short amount I played, 13-2 pissed me off with its excessive weeaboo dialogue. I thought 13 was ok but the two halves of the game were like different games.
easily final fantasy 14.. talking about before realm reborn was released.
Reborn ruined final fantasy 14, they should have left the game un changed, it was a masterpiece.
it was awful. dont kid yourselves.
Either Final Fantasy 6 or 9.
6
Every other answer is simply wrong.
I like you.
From your silly poll i prefer FF13 but my personal favourite will always be FFX as that was my 1st. FF7 is a close second. I enjoyed playing it on my PSP

please don't call me an idiot, that's uncalled for and you don't know me. (edit. glad you removed it)
So why have a poll or discussion? Why not just slam FFIX on there as the only option, since it's "factually" the best game.? :)

If I read a book and I'm not the least satisfied with it half-way through, I'm not going to bother with reading it any further (unless it has an educational purpose). I just couldn't stand the artstyle, plot, and atmosphere, of FFIX. It sucked (for me).
6, 4 and 7 were amazing and frankly every other FF game has been somewhat of a letdown in comparison.

Its all opinion there is no fact.
