I cant decide :S
@finalfantasy94:
FFVI still looks fantastic, FFVII doesn't
Comparing 7 and 6 graphics yea 6 wins but again thats not saying much since 7 is fugly now so 6 wins by default. Its not cause its some awesome looking game.
Speaking of FF games I just bought VIII on Steam and it looks pretty decent. Backgrounds are a fuzzy mess but character models are nice and clean now instead of jagged balls.
Still waiting for that FFIX steam version though. It has to happen after VII and VIII were done. It just has to :(

PC beggars don't deserve it. And beside, FFIX never had a PC port like 7 and 8.

You might want to try an emulator especially if you still have the original discs, since at that point you wouldn't have to download the game. Any decent graphics cards these days easily upscale games through emulation, sometimes going so far as to make them look clearly better then PC versions of the same game. Heck with additional mods you can get Final Fantasy IX to look like this. Not to mention it's unlikely that Final Fantasy IX will be released on Steam since it was never released before on PC unlike FF7 and FF8.
Ironically I thought for a second about buying FF VIII on Steam but without something like the Tifa Bootleg mod for FFVII there wasn't much incentive. Ironic to since Square's legal team likes to go after modders even though they're probably responsible for a good portion of the sales Square got when they decided to finally release FF7 on Steam. This is from the same company that didn't want to allow the PS3 HD Remake of FFX to have a Japanese audio track because they didn't want the game to be different from the Vita version *slams head on desk repeatedly*.
Looking back at Final Fantasy VIII, I don't know how I would view it if it was released in this day and age. The story was fine when I was in high school, especially with Squall being, well Squall. However in looking back at it the story itself was a bit ridiculous with the time travel, GF's, etc. I know some people don't like the romance story lines but without the Squall and Rhinoa arc near the end the whole story would have ended up being nothing more then a giant cluster. Very unlike FF6 and FF7 which had Kefka and Sephiroth driving things forward.
Anyway here's to hoping that FFXV will recapture some of the old magic.
My top 3 games would have to be 7,8,9 however 10 was pretty sweet when it came out early on in the PS2's life.
VI
And no, I did not spell VII wrong.
Nobody is going to argue with you. Over the years, 6 has replaced 7 as the most revered Final Fantasy.
It is the better game tho. It aged much more gracefully.
In what way has it aged more gracefully? I mean 7 graphics are pretty ugly now but that doesint say much on 6 part when you compare it to that. Also seems 6&7 constally switch places as the most revered.Just seems the way it is.
Obviously the visuals in FF6 have aged more gracefully. While FF7 still has great looking backgrounds, the character models are fugly, making the game look very inconsistent visually. Both FF6's environments are sprites still look great.
FF6's controls have also aged more gracefully. FF7's walking controls can be downright awkward whereas FF6 has no such problem.
FF7 is full of bad mini-games, which bogs down the pacing. FF6 does not have this problem.
I don't agree that 6 and 7 switch places as the most revered. I think that FF6 has been held in higher esteem than FF7 for a very long time and I don't see that changing.
I mean, FF6 comes out on top on almost every list that ranks the series:
Gamesradar Top 7
IGN rankings
N4G Top 10
Kotaku ranking
RPGFan Top 5
I was going by forums and topics when it comes to most revered. I see FF7 and FF6 always switching. I always find Top whatever list a waste of time. Also yea of course 6 controls aged better cause well its up down left and right you cant really botch that.Again comparing 6&7 graphics wise and saying 6 aged better isint saying much since 7 is fugly since the models are outdated so yea 6 won by default cause its not 3d models but its not like it some gorgeous game.On the mini game front I havent played 7 in a bit so cant remember if your forced to go through each one.
My only argument was that time was kinder to FF6. Even if you don't find the graphics to be gorgeous (I certainly think FF6 is one of the very best looking games on SNES), we can agree that they still aged better than FF7's and between that and the controls, the game aged better overall.
And just FYI, you can skip some mini-games, but the game forces an unusually large percentage of them on you.
