I was expecting the Xbox One to run away with this one, but now that it's been all but confirmed that the Xbox One does not in fact replace your cable box and basically just uses Kinect as a glorified remote control with multifunctioning capabilities, I'm just not sure. Which console do you think makes the best media player? Here's how I see it.

The Xbox One:

Pros: Blu ray, access to tv and internet all on the console on a single screen, HBO Go, Hulu+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, media on xbox live, smart phone compatibility

Cons: Kinect voice commands seem kind of lame, motion commands seem even worse, possibility of having to be a gold subscriber to access the functions

Playstation 4:

Pros: Blu Ray, PSN media, Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon Prime, Vita functionality (not sure about this one)

Cons: As far as I know, you will have to (gasp) use your tv remote to start watching tv. You also can't browse the web on the PS4 while you watch tv, and I don't think HBO Go has been confirmed.

Wii U:

Pros: TVii basically does everything Microsoft did on the Xbox One without having to use voice commands/arm waves. Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix are incorporated into the tv guide so you don't have to use separate apps for your digital services. You can browse the internet/chat with friends while watching tv without using tv real estate.

Cons: No Blu Ray, No HBO Go

but then what is the point of having a bd player in it?

if you have to install them then games could have come on a cassette deck for all the difference it makes.

the whole thing is just silly.

bd was a shytty format this gen and now it goes on to next gen to be an even more senseless unneeded addition.

we would all have been better off just buying a bd player if we needed one and having some super cheap format for games to come on since we are just going to install them and never ever get the disc out of the box again.

Obviously the Xbox dONE because it is what it's designed for.

Since I can have my media business on the PC, the console would have to be designed and built for gaming. PS4 fits that category.

The only real advantage of owning a physical representation of a game is that you can take it to your friends house or another system and play it. or just resell it. After that is much better to own a digital version of the game altogether. Besides unless you're going to be buying digital games there's no point in having that much spaces.. and if you are buying digital then there is no reason to complain about the blue ray disk. And having to buy another blue ray player to watch movies is a drag if you want to save space :P

Impossible to say until we know the pricing. If the pricing models remain the same then PS4, not worth paying an additional fee for the same content. If MS remove the paywall then XBO will be a better media centre.

Either or both are fine media boxes to those for whom money is nothing to worry about. For spending conscious people here is a better solution.

Buy a Raspberry Pi for $35 USD. Run Raspbmc. Take a hardrive and/or memory card and play content. Done.

Buy a Raspberry Pi here. Download Raspbmc here.

Does XBOX One have a coaxial input? Did they really not address this fundamental thing? That was one thing that sort of could have made it had value to me. If I could return my leased cable box (which is like $15 a month just for the DVR box), and use the Microsoft box instead by plugging it directly into cable. If the XBOX just gets in between a still-required cable box and the television via HDMI, I'm not sure I see the point at all. It's just more clutter and just another wire/connection required (extra connection between cable box and XBOX and then to TV = THREE layers instead of two). Something I don't want at all, and frankly it's embarassing to call it the "one" device if it isn't even replacing the cable box.

No coaxial input, you still need a cable box. It's just works as a plug-through device that adds a UI overlay and Kinect controls. So if you're really into talking to your TV instead of pressing a button it will be good.

Thanks! ^^

Sony: Proven and established media services including music, movies and games. Normally has a more open system for external devices and media types.

MS: Pay multiple times for things like cable, internet, used games, netflix and hulu.Want's a cut of profit from anything that plugs into it.

Seems obvious to me but this is SW and some lems are still lurking.

Then this is literally the dumbest idea ever.  hahaha. only microsoft can come up with this shit. It's a cable box, without coax, and you still need your REAL cable box anyway. So what's the point again? If it had coax input and they were working with cable companies... maybe they were onto something.

I have a terabyte in my PC and I only have like 50gb left. Considering that most next gen games are probably gonna be 20gb at least, those 500gb are gonna get eaten up quick.

obviously xbox one will be the better media player.  PS4 probably the better gaming machine.  Both can do both well.  So people will decide what they value the most.

No, just look at Wii U TVii lol.

I feel the same though (I don't subscribe to cable, but I do use an antenna to record things in WMC).

Well, I'm not sure if it's obvious at all, really. That's why I created the poll. If the Xbox 1 would have had a coax input, it would have been obvious, but alas, it's really nothing more than Wii U TVii with voice and motion controls and blu ray. I have a moderately sized blu ray collection, so that kind of matters to me. Otherwise, Nintendo would win easily in my eyes. As it is, though, all 3 systems seem pretty close. If you have Netflix and Amazon Prime, the Wii U is pretty nice since its latest update because you can access both of those apps through the TVii without going back through the OS. I also prefer using the tablet to raising my voice and waving my arms. I don't think Sony is quite on the same level as Microsoft and Nintendo, but PSN is a nice little media store in its own right.

It's certainly true that gaming is the first priority of a console, but secondary functions do matter. When I purchased the PS3, the Xbox 360 had the better library of games, but the vast majority of games were on both systems, the PS3 had free online, and I wanted a blu ray player. Luckily for me, the PS3 started getting quality exclusives rolling in, so I got the best of both worlds with it. It's interesting to me that a console like the Xbox One, which clearly is being marketed as a media center first, is not getting the majority of the votes as the best media player. I don't really think it should be either, because without the coax in, it really doesn't have much to distinguish itself from the other consoles in that department.

Either one seems good to me, between Blu ray, Netflix, hulu, and Amazon Instant Video. Maybe a nod to the X1 if you have HBO.
