I am sure that we have never had this much choice when it came to SKUs. However, is so much choice good? Or is it confusing? What happened to the times when you simply bought a console and didn't have to worry about which features this particular one has in contrast to the other console of the same name? Yes, they are all essentially the same, but it is rather frustrating if you buy a console and find out that a better version is coming out 6 months later for about the same price.

I mean, all this tech jargon ends up being confusing for a simple consumer. Consoles are meant to be the simple alternative to the PC. However, nowadays you have to worry about HDMI, HD, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 20 GB, 40 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB, etc. I mean, what happened? Why can't all these specs and all this jargon just stay with the PC? I just want to plug in the console and play games. Why do I have to make sure that my console meets the requirements? Why do I myself need to make sure that I am getting the best experience from my console?

It is indeed normal to perhaps have a new version of a console come out a year or two, maybe three, after the console launched with minor upgrades such as it taking up less space. Nothing major, though. The old console becomes obsolete and the new version is its successor. It's still just one console.

So we need to now look at Venn diagrams to find out which version of a console we want to purchase? No offense, I am grateful for your help, but why do we need to do this all of a sudden? It simplifies things, yes, but it is still not as simple as having just one SKU.

60GB SKU is your path to salvation.

But if you are a Cheap **** just go with the 40GB.

I'd think it's hard to recommend anything other than the 60gb if money is not really an object. Most features, better working features, and a decent amount of HD space out of the box. If money is an object, I'd go 40gb. Why you'd get the 80 gigger is beyond me.

I am talking about a console having numerous SKUs in general. This mainly applies to the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. I am not actually asking for recommendations. The fact that I am asking for recommendations in my titles is a bit ironic because you never had to do that with consoles before. You just bought a GC/PS2/Xbox last gen and you were set to go. Get what I mean?

So are you asking for recommendations about which SKU to buy, or are you just bashing SKUs in general?

I would go with the old 60 giger. Bad BC on the newer models = no buy for me.

Why can't I edit my first message? What happened to my very first post? Why does it say "Meow" now? No wonder everyone's confused about what this thread is about.

Or maybe it's just gamespot being glitchy again. It's been happening a lot lately, but not to this extent.

i like all these SKUs, it means i can get the machine that suite my needs most without either having to sacrefice something i want or get extra crap that i dont want and pay for it. i hope MS, sony and ninty take it a step further next gen and allow ppl to pick what features they want from an online store so they can get the software features as well as the hardware features they want (ie if i want blu-ray playback then i can buy the codecs from the PS store...if not then i can ignore it). i like having the choice.

the only things that should remain constant are the CPU, GPU, disc drive and RAM (and all supporting hardware for those like the motherboard and such like). the basic guts of a console. if it ever gets to the stage where only certain SKUs can play some games then its gone to far. so if i buy a 20GB PS3, it must be able to play every PS3 game to the same levels as a 60GB or 80GB.

besides that though im very pro choice.

I would just wait till next fall and get the $300 SKU with 250 GB, 2 HDMI, 8 USB ports, backwards compatibility added back, etc.

Or you can wait 4 more years and get the model that is 500 GB with stereoscopic 3D compatibility and PS4 compabitibility.

In short, Why would you buy ANY product that is going to be outdated or replaced after a year or even months by the same Company who made the prior model????? Especially when the newer models are sometimes DOWNGRADES! These SKUs are a desperate attempt to have a good holiday in light of Xbox 360 and Wii interest. In which case, you have to wonder if it is good to buy ANY of the SKUs as there is no gaurantee that they will achieve that or last through this generation.

Sony and Microsoft should have come out with ONE! Just one model. I hate having to explain to costumers what is different about each SKU.

I'd say the best would be the new Premium and the 60GB PS3
