I am sure that we have never had this much choice when it came to SKUs. However, is so much choice good? Or is it confusing? What happened to the times when you simply bought a console and didn't have to worry about which features this particular one has in contrast to the other console of the same name? Yes, they are all essentially the same, but it is rather frustrating if you buy a console and find out that a better version is coming out 6 months later for about the same price.
I mean, all this tech jargon ends up being confusing for a simple consumer. Consoles are meant to be the simple alternative to the PC. However, nowadays you have to worry about HDMI, HD, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 20 GB, 40 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB, etc. I mean, what happened? Why can't all these specs and all this jargon just stay with the PC? I just want to plug in the console and play games. Why do I have to make sure that my console meets the requirements? Why do I myself need to make sure that I am getting the best experience from my console?
It is indeed normal to perhaps have a new version of a console come out a year or two, maybe three, after the console launched with minor upgrades such as it taking up less space. Nothing major, though. The old console becomes obsolete and the new version is its successor. It's still just one console.
