It all began in 1972 (Dont ask me why when you go to the last page of system wars theres apparently 6+ threads made in 1970 o_O) with the release ofMagnavox Odyssey. Since then, many companies thought: Wow! Thats like totally amazing! We're putting our interactive TV stuff up too! And these crappy interactive stuff soon involved into what we now know as.... a "good game". And these good games soon evolved into an "Super Deluxe Amazing Game" which then involved into a "Amazing Game" and then into a "Good Game" and into a "Okay Game"

I'm not sure if you understood any of that crap :| Basically the first good game was the 3rd generation, 4th generation was the best then it slowly went crappier and crappier until.......... o_O Video games won't be worth playing anymore?!?! But that's just my opinion, I didn't make this thread to bore you to death, I made it to ask YOUR opinion. Thats right, for the 1millionth time in your life, someone has made a poll and is actually asking for YOUR opinion. Someone actually cares about YOUR opinion. But you may be thinking "Oh HELL no, how did you skip on the 1st two generations! I'm getting the heck out out here!" And then that'll utterly devesate me, if I have no one in which to ask an opinion from, what else can I do to find out the best video game console in existance? The answer is simple: Die. When I die I can ask God, for he knows all. Unfortunately, since I don't want to die I'm going to have to desperately pray that you don't give a hoot about the 1st two generations and therefore *hopefully* you will fill out the poll.

But now I face another dillema don't I? You may be thinking. "Yes this sounds intresting and everything, finding out the best generation in existance, but how on EARTH, are we going to find out the best console in existance?" AGAIN the answer is simple: Die and ask god. However, since you want to be a living person who knows the answer to this unknowable answer, after we find out the best generation in existance I will do ANOTHER poll. In this poll we will find out, as best as a mortal dude can, the best console in existance. Thats right, not just in Hyrule, not just in the Sacred Realm, not just in the Twi- oh wait, I forgot that most of you are Ninty/Zelda haters :|. Not just in the World of Sonic, not just in whether the heck Uncharted is or where Assasin's Creed is (earth), EVERYWHERE! The entire neverending existance of the universe.

But now, another bloody dillema, you may be thinking: "I hate Sonic, Uncharted and Assasin's Creed, what about the Ring of Halo?" and the answer to that question is AGAIN very simple: Die, no one cares about Halo >:] But I'm getting a little carried away, I've yet to explain each of the generations haven't I? Okay, the third generation began with the Nintendo Entertainment System. This marked the en- who am I kidding -_- Go here if you really want to knowhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_(third_generation) And dont go complaining about Wikipedia being unreliable. I'm sure Brandon Harris will want to hear all about it.

Well before I furtherly bore you to death, let me now declare this poll: OPEN!!!!!!!! Thats right, you can vote NOW! As soon as I click submit, and I will do this as soon as I type the last letter, you can VOTE! Aren't you excited? But before that, I'm afraid I must further bore you with a disclaimer.

DISCLAIMER: I don't actually hate the Halo series :P

Right then, I click submit in

6th generation. Between the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube there were loads of good games to play. I feel like this gen has lost some of that.

This might be the nostalgia talking, but 6th, easily.

Its when gaming finally started to hit its stride, but not get too pricey that publishers were constantly playing it safe and dumbing down. It was mainstream enough that you could talk about GTA and anyone knew what it was, but not so much they started making games for your mom to enjoy instead of you.

Between Grand Theft Auto III, Halo, Half-Life 2, and Resident Evil 4, innovation was everywhere, across every system. Consoles were starting to become more then toys, with Xboxes supporting fun online and PS2's as well, plus a trend towards multimedia that made the Xbox and PS2 capable of playing music and movies as well.

It was also when you consistently saw the highest number of high quality and amazing games, and the start of a unified price system (in the US at least), so games wouldn't range from $20 to $100, plus gaming journalism started to take off so consumers were more well informed, and developers used feedback on the internet for their games.

Overall, it was the most innovative, most fun, most memorable generation for me. This gen seemed more like a jump towards better graphics, and while it meant some games that looked great and were also huge, it also meant the need for skyrocketing budgets and less innovation out of a risk of low sales. Though the indie scene you can see on PC and downloadable console titles definitely keeps a mix between big budget mainstream, and some occasional unique experiences.

wow, so graphics alone define how good a game is? Your fine with playing a crappy game so long as it has the best graphics you've ever seen? :|

One thing I do like about this generation is how unified games seem to be, so it seems like system fanboyism shouldn't be as bad. Aside from first party titles or titles that only work on some systems (like RTS on PC or stylish hack n slash on consoles), most games tend to be multiplat. Back then though, it was MUCH more split, and not even paid to do so. GTA came out on PS2 first because they just felt like it, Far Cry was PC only since consoles then didn't hold up as well as modern consoles (still surprised that The Witcher 2 supposedly runs on PC equivalent of medium settings 6 years after Xbox came out), and it meant that people who chose Gamecube or Xbox were a bit shafted.

Now, whether you choose Xbox, PS3 or PC (not Wii, for obvious tech reasons), you get like 80% of the games across the board unless they are first party exclusive, paid exclusives, or PC indie titles (plus the aformentioned "different titles working better on different systems" thing). Now you get Grand Theft Auto on Xbox same as PS3, now Valve is in bed with consoles while still giving PC gamers love, and in general there's more for people to love, and more money for devs to earn so they can make more games.

Win, win I say (unless you're a fanboy who doesn't want other people to enjoy things).

16-bit. So many quality games and it was an enormous leap over the previous generation in graphics, sound, gameplay, and control. Also, the transition to 3D was extremely sloppy.

7th generation, don't let nostalgia get in the way. Game are better than they have ever been. There have been so many improvements this gen when it comes to indie games and the amount of freedom you are given as a player in all games. Online is better than ever.

PSX-Saturn-N64-3dfx. Pure and simple awesomeness. A special place of honor goes to 3DO for Road Rash.

Hmmmmm, well the most magical console I ever played was the N64, so I'm going with the 5th gen.

However the SNES/Genesis were pretty awesome too.

Every gen has it's strengths, but I prefer the SNESvsGEN. I'm certainly taking arcades and PCs into account as well.

Loved the games from back then:

SNES- DKC, LttP, StarFox, Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger

Genesis- Sonic 2&3, SoR 2&3, Road Rash 3, Gunstar Heroes

Ive gotta say this generation as the games are the most fullfilling and complete. Not to mention this gen has brought back many of last gens games in HD. The only thing im missing is a great FF such as X or XII (13 was good but not as good as those imo). This gen just has amazing production and overall the best games id say.

Lol there was a leap? the first years of 4th gen with some exceptions where bsaically 8-bit games with more colors. SNK had the only real graphical leap from the start. Also what about gens 1 and 2? People could like those.

Is 16-bit 4th gen? If so I go with that for the SNES library alone. Genesis was just a nice bonus to top it all off, but my best gaming memories come from the SNES and I can still enjoy most of those games today.

I'm torn between teh N64/PS1 one era and the PS2/XBOX/GC Era

The N64/PS1 era was amazing to me and a huge part of my childhood, you simply had to buy both systems back then. The N64 had zeld OoT and Majora Mask, I will never forget riding my horse across the field as the sun sets in the distance or the music. It had Golden Eye and Mario 64, man I can't forget any of that it makes me nostaligic! And the PS1 had Spyro and the old FF games along with MGS ect....the PS1 had a great variety of games and it was really the first system that had more mature games also.

Last gen had the PS2 which I think is the best system to date, it had more games and such quality than any other system. If I was forced to pick only one system to own for the rest of mylife it would be PS2.

For me its easily the ps2 era. No system today can match the variety that was availible on the system. This generation has been spammed to death with shooters and the release of broken games needing a patch upon release.

Threads like these mostly show the age of the people on here. People born in the early 90's are probably going to vote for the 5th or 6th generation because of nostalgia. I personally think the 4th generation was the best, probably because I was a kid and... Games were better back then, damn it.

I'm an mid 90s kid and I still voted for 4th Gen. I grew up with a Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64/PS1 and didn't join the 6th Generation til late. Poll shall last until a week has passed since I started it. Looks like a tight fight between the 6th and 7th generation, not very surpising. It cant beNostalgia that I voted for 4th because I played my 64 the most when growing up. However, these days my 64 collects more dust then my SNESE :D

I'd have to say 6th generation was the best, in its time(obviously, the 7th generation is the best because of new tech and innovations) compared to other generations in their respective time. There was a lot of variety in that gen, and each system had something to offer. There was a good variety of every type of genre there is. 7th generation is all about online gaming, incorporating new ways to use consoles, DLC, and last but not least, first person shooters.
