Who really cares about any next gen DVD format when you can download HD content to your x360 and in the future your PC. The whole thing with discs is an obvious ploy by the entertainment industry to hold on to a past in which their vast infrastructure in set up for. Meanwhile Technology moves apace and by the time the general public knows what Blu-Ray/HD DVD is these same companies will have gotten their act together and embraced the online revolution. Rather than run in terror and bury their heads in the sand they could be maximising download profit and create an eco-system where everyone wins. Because lets face it people; Online aint going anywhere!!

I do. But that's because I like hard copies of games and movies. I also rent movies pretty frequently, so that helps out with a hard copy.

But dont you guys think if the downloading infrastructure was streamlined; ie easy, quick and readily accessable from anywhere, oh yeah and when you paid for it you owned it would be much better than discs that get scratched up easy. Anyway, if you wanted to take it with you you could you something equivilent to an SD card ie, much smaller with the potential for much more space. Storage is getting cheaper every day!!

Why the heck does anybody want to download content onto their console?! I don't get it! Download it on yoru computer and then stream it to the console!! That way you can play it on the TV, on the computer, AND your portable media device (ala iPod). You can only play it on the TV if you download to the console. Don't do it!!

the reason taht discs are important is because most people won;t have the capacity to store all of the data needed to have multiple HD movies. i want to be able to watch the things I won, whenever I want to. That means having it in my possession. Yes, I could have it on a hard drive but what if it gets full or what if it gets erased???

Downloading movies is a good idea for people who just like to rent movies, not own them. I like having a hard copy so if my HDD crashes I am not screwed out of my movie collection. I am also not a huge computer person so my Computer setup is hardly ideal for movie watching but since I am a movie buff I have my PS3 hooked up to my Samsung 40 inch HDTV 1080p with surround sound. Not every has broadband as well and very few people wanna wait for a low quality movie to download on their computer. Downloading will only hurt blockbuster and netflix, not the movie industry. There are still a ton of people who like to collect movies (like me) and buy the speacial edition in the speacial case and display their collection in their living room so when guests come over you can say pick a movie to watch as opposed to people crammed in front of a computer. Downloading movies will never be the future of movie watching, just movie renting.

I for one am in favor of downloaded content, in whatever form. I have bought quite a few things from Valve off of Steam, and think it is a great way do it. I think when done right, I prefer it to a hard copy. I think downloading HD movies and what-not is a great move. It does seem to make more sense to just stream it in from your PC to make it more versitile, but I can see why MS doesnt do that with the 360 content. Too much room for piracy and hacking.

If you can hardly afford games, you shouldn't have purchased a next-gen console. You're wasting the technology.

Do you know much space HD Movies will take up on a harddrive? i can tell you 20gigs on the 360 would be eaten up pretty fast. also I dont want to get to a point that ill have to delete movies that Dled and paid for. i rather just get a hard copy that i do not have ot worry about deleting due to space.

I guess one major question comes to mind; Can streaming video have the same quality as blu-ray or HD-DVD? As it stands right now, I wouldn;t think so. Plus, What if servers get bogged down? Will I have to wait for my movie to buffer during a huge fight scene? Not cool.

Its not dribble. I truely think you're wasting your time on a next-gen console if you don;t have an HDTV. And if you say you can hardly afford games, you cannot afford a HDTV.

Movies in 720p will stream just fine from your computer to your 360 wirelessly. There is no need to store any content that could otherwise be streamed to the GAMING CONSOLE. Just some perspective people.

Right now I'm not that bothered. I'll wait to see which format comes out on top and I'll probably pick up a player when it actually starts to become the primary format.

You didn't answer my question. Is it the same quality. In know its 720p, but is that without any glitches, the best possible audio? What about 1080p? PS3 users might want that. What about uncompressed audio that makes very large file sizes?

Then get it on dvd for 9.99 at Best Buy. Blu-ray and HD DVD are superfluous right now as far as most people are concerned.

One thing blu-ray does in this regard is to prevent against scratches and such. So, right there you have an even further step on preserving a movie whether its on disc media or on a HDD.

It looks exactly the same in terms of quality. 1080p is too large to easily stream wirelessly (or wired). That's why all your HD broadcasts are in 720p. Audio is all part of the streamed package. Keeping media on your console (like a movie collection) is totally bogus.

I have bought a lot of online content (a lot) from the iTunes Store, and in four years have never had any media corrupt on me.

but see there is a chance that a file can get corrupted, or hard drive fails. so i dont like to take chance on dl media if i have to buy it.

I have 17 Bluray movies and 6 HD-DVD movies.   On average that would take up over 500GB of space if I was to download and store them over the internet.   I plan to buy double that number for the rest of this year.  Sorry, but I don't want to get a 1 TB HDD just for one year's worth of movies.  I doubt many others will either.

I can understand what you're saying for sure. I see nothing wrong with owning hard copies of movies. My problems lie with people who insist on downloading and keeping content on their gaming console. It's the worst idea in the entire world. If you're going to engage in digital media downloads, the logical thing is to do it on your computer. Then stream whatever you want to the TV through the console. If you're afraid of losing your data, make sure to back it up. Then put that backup in a cool closet somewhere.
