A bit of a messy comparison. Sony is involved in many things.

If you make it Nintendo vs Playstation, fine. Otherwise you can make it Nintendo vs Sony vs MS and MS would probably win.

Competition in the A/V market has stepped up drastically, so Sony's dominance there has declined and MS is doing very well with software and services all over the world.

I love Sony products though, always have. Always look to them first. For me they have a reputation of quality and reliability. I was recently checking out their new single speakers SRS-RA5000 and the LSPX-S2. Extremely fascinating. If I'm choosing an A/V device, I'd probably choose them first. But they just have more competition in their own areas than MS does.

On topic, when it comes to gaming, it's hard. You have to understand, Nintendo handhelds have always done very well, usually better than most home consoles. So they are known world wide there. BUT even the word Playstation is known all over the world. You could probably have someone recognise the name Playstation before they know anything about the console.

As for why Nintendo are more popular in gaming.

First of all, 26 of the top 50 best sellers of all time are published and/or made by nintendo.

Nintendo has powerhouse IPs such as Mario and Pokemon, Animal Crossing might join these ranks if New Horizon turns out not to be just a fluke. Zelda might join them too if they keep up the steam.

Nintendo's presence on the mobile phone gaming market is fairly strong.

Looking at recent works, Sony did well with Spiderman, Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2. Meanwhile Nintendo has been absolutely killing it with Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild, Odyssey, Mario Kart, Smash Bros Ultimate, Pokemon.

And lastly, although, how successful sony is with Playstation. Playstation is not as heavily associated with the corporation as Nintendo's stuff are to their IPs and hardware. The first 3 Nintendo Home Nintendo Consoles were practically just called Nintendo over here (Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64), even later on, they usually tend to be referred as Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Gamecube or Nintendo Switch. Whereas Playstation is just refered to as... PlayStation. So yeah, branding plays a part too.

Boy oh boy I tried to stay out of this topic but I just couldn't resist myself in the end. Of course these type of topics are touchy for everyone because Fanboys on both sides would love to defend their console of choice and that's understandable because human beings are tribal creatures. But I think the answer is quite simple. It's a tie between the two companies. Nintendo has been making consoles since the very first generation of gaming. Their first console was the color TV console and their first handheld was the Game & Watch handheld. So Nintendo is clearly the most historic and legendary of all gaming companies in this industry. But only one brand came in and knocked them off their Throne hard and that was the PlayStation brand. That and that alone puts that brand on equal footing with Nintendo. At the end of the day, I say both of them are a tie. Nintendo stands undefeated in the handheld market and Playstation stands nearly undefeated in the Home console Market. So both brand know darn well what they're doing and how to thrive and succeed in their respective niches. They are both well known around the world so I think Fanboys on both sides need to accept that and stop trying to put down the other brand.

This is a weird one because Sony I think definitely has the numbers in its' favour overall worldwide, but for sheer iconic intellectual property Nintendo is just untouchable and it's when we get into IP and brand association we get into this odd territory, even among non gaming demographics Nintendo is known and associated with Mario, they're basically synonymous, similarly Xbox and Halo forged a very strong brand association that managed to penetrate demographic barriers, Sony is really interesting in that it has a well developed quality first party stable but doesn't really have an IP associated with it in the same way as the other two players. Sony undoubtedly have hugely successful and well known IP's within the gaming market, how well those IP's/Characters from those IP's are known amongst wider pop culture compared to their competitors is probably the more interesting question.

PlayStation has outsold Nintendo 3 out of 4 generations so far and the PS5 is currently selling at a faster pace than the Switch did at the same point in its life.

You can't argue against sales.

Nintendo has pokemon, so they win this one.

You've got it the wrong way around. Nintendo is more popular in Japan and America, whereas PlayStation is more popular in Europe. Nintendo was never dominant in Europe even in the NES and SNES days, when they were unable to beat the Sega Master System or Mega Drive. Their most dominant console in Europe was the Wii, the only time Nintendo clearly won a generation in Europe.

Well exception to Vita, Sony consistently sold their gaming consoles 90-100M+ since PS1 first introduced and seems PS5 will be no exception.

As game publisher Nintendo is still unmatched but as worldwide console leader its always the Sony PlayStation.

Always?
