Crytek only have Far Cry and Crysis (and now Crysis Warhead)
IW only has the CoD games.
Epic have Unreal Tournament and GeoW.
Valve have Half Life, Half Life 2 + Episodes, and TF2 (Excluding CS and L4D since they're the creations of former independent devs)
Bungie has Marathon and Halo trilogies, which are rather similar between their games.
The winner goes to Monolith.
When you have NOLF 1 & 2, AvP 2, FEAR (bleh), and Condemned on your resume, it's really a no brainer. Those are FPSes with edge.
well.. i guess consoles are much harder to develop for than PCs.. especially when it comes to FPSs.
And pulling off an outstanding fps and multiplayer experience (without dedicated servers) on consoles is no small feat.
So i'd go with bungie for this one. (despite i love CS:S, but it's no match for what bungie managed to put together).
P.S. i guess ranked match making concept started with the halo series.
Valve.
Father of the modern FPS.
edit* oh +1 for their mod community support (now coming to steam zomg!)
However Iward is still a great dev, Cryek keep improving thier forumla and establishing themselves as a great dev, and Bungie have pushed a massive surge forward in console online gaming and community, and of course have the reputation of being a great dev.
whats with all the ID love, yeah back in the day they made some great games but what have they done in the last few yearsonewiththegame
True that they haven't developed a game since Doom 3 but what I have to look at is not quantity but quality. When they do develop games I usually enjoy them very much not to mention that I grew up on their games so there is nostalgia there as well.
Monolith and in the near future Ubisoft.lesner87
Are you saying that just because of Far Cry 2 Ubi gets vaulted into the upper echelon of game development ?
Valve hands down. Bungie is good, but they are a one-trick Pony with Halo. Valve has HL, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, and L4D coming up.POJO_MOFO
Lulz?
Turtle Rock Studios are doing Left 4 Dead. Gooseman and Cliffe did Counter-Strike. The only credit I give Valve is with Team Fortress 2, because it seemed to be a real honest take on the old Quake mod. Apart from that, I don't think Valve has done much.
When someone has a shiny new toy, Valve looks at it with envy, and nabs them up before anyone else gets the credit. But they aren't individually merited, because it's simply a "Valve" game. I honestly don't like that method. I wouldn't mind if TRS or the DIT team were subsidiaries of Valve (especially since they were in the middle of creating their own games anyway), but yeah the publisher taking all credit does not sit with me.
Enough of my rant. There's just not enough love for Monolith. Here be all the folks who ask for refreshing and innovative games, and yet Monolith is hardly even glossed over.
Be damned gentlemen, be damned.

I wouldn't say they would be the best FPS devs by any stretch, but they certainly are the best supergroup developer with the large quantity, quality and variation in their resume.

Its not as if Valve doesn't fully acknowledge the creators of Narbacular Drop, Team Fortress and Counter Strike... Is hiring them suddenly a bad thing? :?
Hell Turtle Rock was practically part of Valve - as they worked so closely together, before they were bought, or so they said after the buy-out.
But Valve goes about buying out all the 'shiny new toys'? :?
I think that is stretching it.
If someone doesent hire them somone else will.... That is normal.

Now you know the reason I'm too fond of Valve. The way they do things is like the during the Golden Age of Hollywood where if a studio liked an actor or director (or any other crew), they'd hurry them up, lavish them with riches, and make them sign multi-year contracts in unflexible hell. The studio virtually owned you and anything you put out. Sure, you can name some c1assic actors and actresses (because studios abused their fame in an effort to outdo each other), but try and name more than a handful of directors pre-Renaissance and you'll probably struggle.
So yes, hiring them in a way is a bad thing. Sure, you get money, and you make your game, but in the end, your boss wins. If Valve did what every other publisher has done and credit the actual developers (along with their credits as publisher) I wouldn't mind. But it's all or nothing for Valve. Maybe I'm just incredibly right wing and like to see certain individuals rise and be applauded for their own particular achievements. I know i want to be.
id are good but havnt made meny games recently
i dont like any games made by valve apart from portal and team fortress
Monolith IMO is the only FPS dev to have prove themselves time and time again delivering a very diverse FPS lineup.
No One Lives Forever, FEAR, Shogo, Blood, Tron 2.0, and a few more.
Valve, despite being a company that gives great support to their fanbase, doesn't deserve the title. I can only give them credit for the main HL games and Steam.
Remember folks, this is about the best FPS dev, not the most influential or the most historically significant.
Valve makes good games, but I don't think that their titles really stand as great shooters because the core combat just isn't that rewarding. Valve titles are fun because they have alot of variety and great moments (talking primarily about the HL2 stuff right now) along with quality design, but the actual meat and potatoes shooting content is just sort of meh.
On the other hand you have a game like F.E.A.R. that features very little variety, and no really memorable "water cooler moments" (no scripted ones anyway, aside from the ending), but even without those frills, F.E.A.R. stands as a damn fantastic shooter because the core combat is the most rewarding the genre has ever seen. The guns feel right, the weapon impact feels right, the enemies are intelligent and dangerous, and the combat is quick, brutal, and intense.
F.E.A.R. alone would already place Monolith pretty high up on the ladder, and the fact that they have been consistently making awesome and unique FPS titles for years now is more than enough evidence to convince me to say that, no matter what historical accomplishments other studios may have under their belts, Monolith is the best FPS dev there is.

Dude, Half-life 2 has by far the best pacing and mishmash of FPS gameplay out there. You shoot in corridors, outdoor places, have vehicles, and hell they gave you the gravity gun.
Then you actually praise fear as being one of the best FPS? It's nothing but a corridor shooter, while great at that, offers no variety like you said. With the exception of the bullet time effect, FEAR played almost exactly like Half-life 2.

Bull ****.
F.E.A.R.s core combat is so much better and more intense than HL2's in every respect that it isn't even funny.
HL2 is, like you said, a great mishmash. But while it excels at variety, its combat simply isn't all that good. Chalk it up to whatever you want, be it lack of good feedback or weapon impact, or just the fact that none of the weapons really feel right, but the combat in HL2 is just sub-par.
F.E.A.R. made every single office shootout and warehouse gun battle ****ing amesome, through the excellent AI, weapons that just felt right, a great sense of impact, and an overall visceral intensity.
In F.E.A.R. when you shoot someone in the face with a shotgun, you really ****ing shoot someone in the face with a damn shotgun. And it feels good.
HL2's combat pales in comparision.
1.Monolith
2.Valve (especialy if you count the mod teams they bought and then integrated into their company_
3.Irrational (I mean..come on...SystemShock2, Tribes:V, SWAT (still one of best tactical MPs and the best Co-op ever) and Bioshock? Impressive as hell)
It might change though...the three last Lith games were pretty dissapointing (especialy Condemned2) compared to their previous efforts and I have mixed feelings about FEAR2, Lith might be loosing their touch
