Because the original E3 was way too expensive and had only a limited impact on the industry itself. This way, the E3 organizers can target the most important industry figures and invite only them to the banquet. That's why the new Min-E3 will only have about 5,000 visitors instead of 50,000.

They will still be having the conferences from what i understand. Other than the games and announcements .... the main attraction for me is the conferences.
