i do, 360 and ps3 already outdated by a lot thanks to the pc.

2011/2012 would make 6/7 years which is plenty for one gen. 10 years is bs, how many of you still care about the ps1 nowadays? by 2015/2016 the ps3 and 360 would be so outdated it would be like playing crash bandicoot on ps1 vs crysis

mephisto_11

I still buy PS1 games.

Some of them are very sought after and sell for 100$+

you and others who replied with yes probably make up 0.001% of all gamers. everyone has moved on, no offence.

all my friends still play ps1 games, you dont ever feel the need to maybe [dont know if you have a 64or not just using as a scenario] whipout your n64 for some nostalgia?

My crystal ball says...

I have feeling an HD Wii is coming sooner than we think. Since N will probably do backward compatibility 100% again, no big deal.

I see Sony keeping with the PS3 for long time, probably just reducing the size, etc. They probably don't want to go through the expensive launch and can just keep encouraging blu-ray.

MS, i have no idea

Personally, I wouldn't care if this gen lasted 10+ years. I don't want to spend $200-$600 on a new console just for graphical upgrades. I understand Nintendo began the 5-year lifespan in the 80's/90's and it kind of stuck, but I think it's time we move to a longer lifespan. 8 years maybe?

The reason that this gen is going by so fast is because we spend so much time waiting for new and amazing games to come out. If MGS4, FFXIII, Uncharted, GT5, GOWIII, Halo 3, The Orange Box, Halo 3, BioShock, and Gears of War all came out on launch, then we'd already have all of our fantastic games, and really wouldn't care if the new consoles rolled in in 2009. Though I want the next gen to begin in 2013 at the earliest, and 2016 at the latest. I want to see devs squeeze all of the potential out of consoles, I want to see an FFXIV, a sequel to FF Versus XIII, GeOW 3, Halo 4, GOWIV, Uncharted 2, Heavenly Sword 2, Killzone 3, Banjo 4, Resident Evil 6, Heavy Rain 2, Devil May Cry 5, Mirror's Edge 2, Fallout 4, Fable 3, Mass Effect 2, Gran Turismo 6, Silent Hill 6, MGS5, all come out this gen, with THEIR sequels coming out NEXT-GEN. I really don't want my money to go to waist.

I am so disappointed about this gen, there are just so little being offered compare to last gen. That says, I hope they get everything right next gen... If that'll ever happen.

I definately too, bring on better graphics, ai, physics, more everything. Am want. 2011 holiday release would be a 6 year life cycle. Thats pretty long for a console. I think it sounds about right to me. I am just hoping that they decide to go a more cheaper route and release a console that is less expensive. No $399 console releases please.

Chances are I probably won't be even getting the next console, as I'm going to university next year and will be entering into debt.

I'm a bit scared of the next generation. I'm worried Sony and Microsoft will take Nintendo's route after the success of the Wii. What reason do MS and Sony have to spend billions developing these incredibly intricate systems and then to create 30-50 million dollar software titles when a gimmick and a mini-game that cost 5 million to make produce just as much profit? I'm probably being more cynical than necessary though, considering we're on the precipice of the greatest holiday season in the history of video-games.

I'll buy the new systems like I always do and that's 5 or 6 months after launch to make sure all the bugs are out. But whenever they release one I without a doubt will buy it

nah i was hoping more like 13-14. i mean i spent 500+ bucks on the elite when it first came out, and if a new console came out by 2011 or 12 i would feel jipped and not really feel that i got my money's worth

No, I wouldnt want another one. This gens consoles cost more than any of the other previous generations and I believe that justifies reason enough that the lifespan should be longer (excluding the wii).

This.

But I'd like to see all 3 release at the same time next gen. This gen just seemed like a cluster f.. and the prices were so uncompetitive that I think a lot of people just got kinda jaded.

However, I hope Nintendo continues to do their own thing, while MS and Sony bring the goods. (technologically speaking that is) because if all 3 consoles go into direct competition, I have a feeling we are going to see a repeat of the 6th gen (where PS2 took the lionshare, and the others just dwindled off in to nothing). Thats not to say Sony will come out ahead, I was more aiming for the fact that one company will probably rise above the rest. And I have a strong feeling that, if this generation is any sign of times to come, Sony actually would be my LAST guess for who that leader will be.

That being said, I am pretty sure this gen is the last gen I preorder/get a launch console. My launch PS3 is fraggin' awesome, but I payed $650 for it when I could have waited and got one for decently cheaper, and with more HDD space. *shrug*

Hm...until I feel that its about that time for me to enter the next gen, that's when I'll upgrade.

Right now, it doesn't feel like I've seen what the PS3 can really offer in terms of epic exclusives and such.

it definitely seems too early to me. There just haven't been enough great games so far this gen. In the ps2 first year they had an amazing run of games and that whole gen had great games on all platforms. In the first year of this gen the 360 have very little, and we've getting a trickle compared to how many great games were coming out last gen.

i kind of don't want it to come around that time. i just bought a 360; about one year i've been playing xbox 360 there still a lot of good games i missed. this gen i waited until the first price cut (pr $360) the warranty went up.

I think 2012-13 will be a good year to start a new generation. That will give the technology a big time to jump. Todays gaming systems PS3/360 produce graphics that look so good I wouldn't want to upgrade to a new system unless it was a major jump in graphics as I am still marveled every time I play games like Heavenly Sword, Devil May Cry and Call of Duty 4. Game makers are going to have to do alot to make me want to jump into next generation early as todays games are just so beautiful.

I doubt they would go that route you don't see Nvidia or AMD cutting corners on graphics they are still pushing the bar but if they did I would problaby quit gaming forever or just game on the PC.

At this point in the gen, I feel kinda dissappointed. Looking at whats planned so far, it seems bleak as well.

We haven't had any really stellar games that people will talk about for years to come. We will have quite a few that are honorable mentions, but we haven't had one of those "OMG" and almost everyone loves it games.

You know what's beautiful about a console release in 2010 or 2011? If I don't want to buy it that early... I don't have to. I can wait until whatever year I want it and then buy it - and I'll have a host of released games, budget games, kinks worked out of the hardware, and a price drop for my trouble. Release early, I say, and I'll wait like I've done the last two gens.

I dont know about the rest of SW but..

im tired of rebuying consoles over and over again..even if this gen is supposed to last 10 years..ill probably never buy another console again..sure you do with Graphics cards..but for some reason it feels different than rebuying EVERYTHING you just did in a few days..its like building a house only to have a tornado wash it away..

Hears to the PS3, 360, and WII..my last gen of consoles..

Pinkyimp

I'm starting to think more like you. My patience is really wearing thin with regards to consoles.

mircooft or Sony probabally wont release another console until 2014 or 2015. Nintendo more than like will release another one in 2010 or 2011. But imho mircosoft or sony shouldn't even realease another console. both of those systems have grapical power, and processing theres really no need for the companies to keep realsing new consoles every five years.

i wudnt want to see another system - i mean, this gen has barely started, it cant end in 5 years. i think the more advanced we get then the long ther consoles shud last. screw the 5 year console crap. its bull. its the end of 2008 practically (well for me it kinda is,year ends for a skool kid when skool does haha) but with lets say 3 and a bit years left pfft. i want this dragged out, and i wanna see wat MC, SOny and Nintendo can do with ther current gen consoles to make it better - cause thers more to come - or so i believe.

I'm actually looking forward to the next XBOX release simply because of the hardware problems this gen. However, if Sony and Microsoft go the Nintendo route, I probably won't be buying a console again. Just imagine...3 systems with nothing but shovelware.
