Poll Who will Sony buy next? (54 votes)

Kojima productions 15%
Bluepoint games 37%
From Software 15%
Platnium Games 7%
House Marquee 6%
Other ( please specify) 4%
No one (they are done purchasing studios.) 17%

According to a recent interview with Sonys Jim Ryan Sony is looking to purchase more studios after Insomniac. Im interested in who do you think it will be, or should be.

I would have originally guessed Kojima productions but given the unpopular user reviews of Death Stranding and Kojimas need to spend loads of $$ with probably little return I don't think it will happen. I honestly think that's why it was announced for PC shortly after the launch date because Sony isn't interested anymore. I think Bluepoint is the most likely purchase as they did a great job on the Nathan Drake collection and the SOC remake. Rumor is they are doing a Demon Souls remake so I feel like this is the most likely candidate.

Owning Platnium Games would give Sony an edge so they don't come across just a cinematic driven publisher cause Platinum Games is known for gameplay fun. Sony needs to buy Platinum Games. (And this time, we'll get a proper Scalebound on PS5)

They won't, but Nihon Falcom would make perfect sense.

Thankfully they don't, rather play their games on PC.

Like it would matter. Sony could shift gears to all Nintendo-type games and people would roast them for that. To most fanboys, it's not what your opponent does, it's how they can attack them.

I would like them to invest in more Japanese publishers though, instead of just assuming they would get most of these games by default just because it's home turf. Especially since Nintendo can continue to eat their lunch with hybrid consoles and take more marketshare. It's a lesson more platform holders need to learn... never assume you own the market.

I would rather see a different studio.. one that focuses on a new online shooting franchise or resurrects SOCOM.

Bluepoint, on paper, is easy to envision, similarly Kojima Productions. The price is likely right and the quality crop is high to make it a staple of the 1st party carousel (especially knowing MM is at risk).

Housemarque are making a BR and Sony already shed itself of those endeavors in favor of publishing over producing.

FromSoft is making too much money on its own, the asking price is too high. Plus they’d likely have to be bought out of their publishing agreement for Elden Ring, which won’t come cheap, especially since there is likely to be resistance (and Kojima would seem far more willing to be scooped up than Miyazaki).

If Sony is going to go big, I’d propose going after Square-Enix. They would be leveraging the hell out of Sony proper but would provide a megaton of valuable properties to license to merc studios.

Bluepoint makes the most sense. It’s a safe bet and you get them working on more remasters/remakes.

More like Sony would force them to make yet another 3rd person cutscene-filled game with non-existent gameplay... no thanks. Sony buying Platinum would be a f*cking nightmare. I'd rather Nintendo buy them than Sony.

Oh I wound't mind Nintendo finally owning Platinum Games, Sony needs to branch out more on their cinematic games cause their gameplay department is really lacking.

Sales show they don't need to branch out though. As long as people buy them Sony will continue to make them. Ive said it over the years here, the average consumer doesn't want Sekiro. They want to live out their summer blockbuster/Fast n Furious fantasies of pure absurdity. These games give them that with little actual challenge.

I mean, did anyone actually watch Hobbs and whatever? A unicorn running a cocaine smuggling ring is less absurd than that garbage

Bluepoint Games cuz most of their works in remastering projects have been Sony-exclusive. I imagine that they'll want a studio to port the older Twisted Metal games to newer systems.

Funny that PlatinumGames is on that poll cuz if anything, Nintendo would most likely buy them more than anyone else.

I think Quantic Dreams will try to branch out, struggle, then come crawling back and let Sony purchase them. Same with what happened with Insomniac.

They should purchase Sanzaru Games and let them take another crack at Sly Cooper.

I dunno how likely it would be for Quantic Dream to be purchased by Sony. If anything, I feel as if the much more likely scenario is that they'll be a subsidiary to Epic Games.

@hrt_rulz01: Sony is known for giving developers freedom to do what they want. This is one of the reasons Hideo Kojima decided to partner with Sony and LittleBigPlanet is a PlayStation exclusive because Microsoft turned it down for being too different.

Other games turned down by Microsoft were Demon’s Souls and Heavy Rain.

I don't care about any of those. I wish they would pick up a dev to begin work on SOCOM again. Either that or just assemble a new in house team for it.

Probably a few more publications to give their games 10/10. Their last published game didn't break 90 meta.

No they don't. Uncharted exists because Sony wanted to copy Gears over what ND originally planned.

Get Miyazaki and From Software and make the sequel to the best game of this gen, Bloodborne.

Platinum games is a great option but I rather sony just moneyhat Nier games. Nier is Square Enix IP and Platinum can produce turd from time to time.

Just buy Atlus already. The guys on Atlus already making lots of money with Persona anyways.

@pc_rocks: Sony did not oppose Naughty Dog’s idea. “Project Big” was the codename of the first Uncharted game. It was not a different game Naughty Dog was developing. https://www.theverge.com/2015/9/28/9397619/uncharted-pitch-video-playstation

It was inspired by Indiana Jones and it’s nothing like Gears of War. If you are referring to the cover system, that was done before Gears of War.

@X_CAPCOM_X: I don't think they'd benefit being bound to PlayStation. We'd have another Bloodborne 20fps nightmare, and they'd miss out on the huge piles of money they get from PC gamers.

Yes, they did. Jason Rubin also left partly because of this. Many cows were attacking him back then saying he's just wooing MS. The original game was much different than what Uncharted became. We have two separate ND developers at different point in time came out to say exactly that. UC was modeled after Gears and Sony explicitly asked ND to do that over what they wanted. After all that's ND always did: chase trends.

Just because something exists prior to Gears doesn't mean that inspired UC. This topic has been discussed to death in SW and I'll take the actual dev words over what cows wishes.

@X_CAPCOM_X: That might be true that it wouldn't have been made without Sony, or maybe FromSoft would've made a Souls like game without Sony's help anyway, who knows.

Yes, Bloodborne looks awesome. Could probably be enjoyed even though it performs quite badly on the console. Wish I could play a PC version of it, but at least it's playable on PSNow.

Proof? On the contrary, I'm 100% sure they didn't approach any of the western publishers. Demon was first published in Japan and in the beginning there was no guarantee of it seeing a western release.

I am going to work on finding these old articles I read from way back. Hopefully I'll find them and get back to you. They approached other publishers than Sony first. I think even Namco was another, who then published Demon's in PAL territories and Dark Souls worldwide.

EDIT: I must say I had that way backwards. I'm mixing up Dark and Demon's. From was actually approached by a Sony publisher to start the series. Actually reinforces my point even more. The person responsible for discontinuing support for the series was Ken Kutaragi (against the will of the SCE studio head, who wanted more Demon's Souls), who thought the game wouldn't sell due to its difficulty. They then went to a lot of other publishers, namely Namco and Atlus, to release the game worldwide, and ultimately Namco to fund and release Dark Souls.

Well, actually, my point is still correct.

Correct that wasn't kutaragi. It was Yoshida. Mixed up my time periods there. He called the game trash before it released. He didn't want to publish it outside of japan actually. It was him or someone else that approached from software to make the game though. Not really interested in looking all this obscure information up atm. My point still stands.

So, I was right. Oh and I don't think Kutaragi has anything to do with it. He left Sony way before if I remember correctly.

Well actually my point still stands with everything you said. It could have still see the light of the day without Sony.
