Well if you want a 3DS I think the cheapest versions of the 3DS family (like the 2DS) are like $50 when on sale. Shouldn't be that big a step. And you can find good quality 3DS's second hand easily, because people buy new ones when they want a limited edition one.

I'm almost done, need two more Metroids. Very good game, can't wait for Prime 4.

It's pretty decent so far. Not amazing, but decent and enjoyable.

@Black96Z: Area 3. About two (?) hours in. Don't get me wrong, I love that it's just a classic Metroid game with none of the added bullshit, it just isn't wowing me like Super did and it doesn't have the cool narrative of Fusion or the environment based lore of the Prime games. Still, fun so far and very well paced.

@turtlethetaffer: im about 10 hours into it. I think i have 7 metroids left to find. Im having a lot more fun with it now that i have almost all upgrades. And a couple "WTF WAS THAT ABOUT" moments.

Only got 4 metroids to go myself.

Now that I have every upgrade I might go back to every previous area and get whatever items I missed.

Beat the game a few days ago. Game is pretty great.

I do agree that playing a game like this on 3DS is less than ideal for your hands. I still got an OG 3DS too.

I just also want to mention that my entire playtime was played in 3D and it looks nice and I love it.

For as much as I enjoyed Metroid when it released and also having a Gameboy (at release) I never played MII. Maybe my opinion would be different if the opposite was true but this is a very good game in terms of atmosphere, sound, control, etc..,

I've hit a wall. I beat the last boss I could find, and ended up coming back full circle on the map. Everywhere I've looked, I only find small areas that hold upgrades, nothing leading to a large enough room to contain another boss. I'll just go through the map and pick everything else up and maybe I'll stumble across something.

@Black96Z: I can see enjoying it more with beefed up firepower. A friend of mine pointed out it feels like you can't run by enemies since they hit you so easily but combat can get repetitive in the beginning and I'd tend to agree. Improved firepower could go a long way to making it a bit more enjoyable, but I still like it. I don't think it's the 9 that Gamespot gave though.

I've been playing it lately and it is a great game...far from Super Metroid but still a very fun game. I really like how challenging it can get, i mean if you blink and get distracted, you will die.

If anything, my biggest complain so far is the lack of boss battles...however, the sense of exploration and discovery are totally worth the price of admission.

@JustPlainLucas: There isn't a single point in the game where you have to backtrack to a previous section to advance the plot (as far as I can remember). If you can't find the way forward, you might need to jump back a few rooms (or check out previously- flooded areas) to see if anything has changed...

@madsnakehhh: There are some decent boss battles scattered throughout the gane, and...in a way, the evolved metroid fights are basically boss battles, too.

Anyway, I enjoyed this game overall. It's probably the hardest Metroid game to date (besides the original) and it's a little repetitive at times, but the gameplay is solid and the added story tidbits are fun.
