Regardless of what it deserves, Halo 3 will get a 9.5
What GS needs to realize eventually is that keeping a series similar along the course of its lifespan is NOT a bad thing, necessarily.
Metroid was punished for feeling to similar to its predecessors, but also punished for becoming more of a fast-paced, action-based FPS (switching the formula up). It got punished both for changing, and for remaining the same.
GS rolls with the hype machine, and anyone who denies that is a fool. Major publications are in the business for the money, and nothing else. Halo 3 will get the 9.5 because if they give it anything less, another TP will occur. Honestly, GS can't handle that right now. Even though their traffic flow was HUGE for a while after the TP review, they actually did lose a lot of regular visitors, and it hurt them more than people would imagine.
9.5, because they don't have the cajones to give it anything more/less.

Dude, no. Gamespot rolls against the hype machine if anything.
That's what I was trying to say- "they are swayed by the hype machine"
It affects them just as much (I'd say even more) than any other reviewing publication, simply because they're the largest and they have so much riding on every major review.
In the case of Halo, I think the hype machine will sway them to give it the score the fanboys want. MS fanboys dominate this site right now (GS chased off the cows at e3 in '06 and the sheep with MP: H, Tetris, and LoZ: TP), and they're not going to chase away their largest userbase.
Well if they're really really brave and honest, they'll give it an 8.0.

No way, it'll get a 9 on hype alone. Not that the game will be bad, I'm sure it will be awesome.

Ahhh theoretical political moves behind the Gamespot reviews eh?... Not a bad guess my friend.

I believe they will flop Halo, because while they'll lose their largest fanbase, they'll maintain their controversial image while also looking unbiased. They might have more to lose looking like the Halo fansite than losing the lemmings.
If only it was so simple as, say, the quality of the game...

I thought of that as a possibility, but I figured that alienating their largest userbase wouldn't necessarily bring back the sheep and the cows that they have lost. In fact, I think that's just going to have to wait until a new generation of young internet-browsing gamers comes up. The forums will be filled with 12 year-olds (even more so than it has always been).
No, you obviously can't just a game based on the quality of the game. That's what people like gametrailers do, and it doesn't get them millions of hits and millions of advertising dollars.
i would think 9.0 but i wouldn't be surprised if GS misscored it to an 8.5...seems to be a trend these days.
could be the start of a new thing, though, i'm seeing a lot of people lowballing halo 3's potential score, so maybe from now on, every big game will get underhyped here in terms of score :P!

True. At this point it may be just trying to keep whoever they haven't alienated. :(
Never will I figure out why they changed the review system, the thing that seperated them from other review sites and undoubtebly was the reason for many subscribers (like myself).Seriously, GS seems to be pulling a Sony.
