I am not sure what they're talking about. If i connect my pair of headphones into my amp/dac, and then connect the amp/dac into the ps5 through usb, there is no sound coming out.

What dac are you using?

Its the Micca OriGen+. Been using it for ages on the ps4 and pc.

Sounds like only dacs that use the UAC1 standard work, and ones that rely on drivers or newer standards don't. You can get splitters that will pull the audio from hdmi and convert it to optical though.

Yea, i was just looking at the hdmi audio extractors, which i believe is what i need? Never used them before so not exactly sure which one to get and if there's any difference in audio from the cheaper options.

Bad ones will make the audio out of sych with the video, I'd research if anyone has recommendations on ones that work well with ps5/consoles in general.

Real bummer that this is such a hassle with all their talk about 3d audio.

It seems very messy, and i don't think i've heard anyone even complain about it before setting up my ps5. Was it too difficult to have an optical out? How is it that the ps4 had it, and a newer system doesn't?

With those hdmi audio extractors, is the audio going through hdmi? I imagine that it does. If that's the case, then their 3d audio isn't even available because the console detects it as speakers and there's no 3d audio on the speakers.

Surround sound and positional audio has been around for decades. How is it suddenly a "game changer"?

Well it's being supported for once. It's also more important now that visuals have caught up. It will also in the near future lead to the perfection of 3D audio as personalized HRTFs and realistic raytraced propagation is cracked, and finally it's use in VR is profoundly important for total immersion. Take the 3D audio out of Alyx and it will lose a ton of impact if not be outright disturbing for users.

I can say for a fact that the 3D audio of the PS5 is awesome with a good pair of headphones and is better than I've ever heard before.. it's really cool and helps a lot with immersion, especially with the haptic feedback and speaker in the controller tying it all together.
