With all the hate for FFXIII's "linear" maps, why NOW is it an issue. someone explain to me!
This topic is locked from further discussion.
bring back the overworld and more towns and we are good!
don't know what I'm talking about then go and play one of the Final Fantasies in the numbers 1-9 and come back.
Because games have evolved.
Snagal123
This, and the fact that something clearly happened when SE was making this game. Why did they all of a sudden decide to step backwards after what everyone(including themselves) have accomplished?

I agree with you two.Well, it's very hard to make a story oriented game full of cutscenes not be linear, so no one should really complain about it.PatchMaster: o You're right. Haven't played a game with a decent story in some time.
Evolution of the genre really, same reason why even though there was no game like it (except maybe Dead Space) between RE4 and 5, everyone hated on 5's controls, whilst those same haters loved 4's.bobbetybobI also hated 4 :P.
Because everyone got used to the free roaming, multiple choice RPGs we get nowadays in my opinion.
Vesica_Prime
Good theory, but I'm afraid you're wrong.
The correct answer would be because the cool thing to do now is be overly critical. Everyone is so nostalgic and hate the new gen for some reason, so every game gets bashed to hell and back as if that's going to change something.
There really are no legit complaints except maybe how developers are treating the PC poorly, but even then it's an overblown issue and people are just disappointed that once PC exclusive are going to consoles and being appealing to more gamers.

Haven't played a game with a decent story in some time. Yeah, stories aren't what they used to be. Recent games have had some decent plots but generally lack story. As long as FFXIII has side missions and some sort of exploration factor it should be fine.

It probably won't be much different, but the Final Fantasy fans always come back for more :? Just seems like SE is putting more emphasis on cinematics than ever before.

So you are implying that there is some knee-jerk opposition? This ^ FFX was the most linear one I've played ot date.I don't know...FFX was pretty linear to me too...Even when you got the airship.
Lto_thaG
Then again we can't forget XII all of a sudden.
Most FF games haven't been even close to as linear as FF13. They gave you a decent sized world map to explore. There's 9 games in the series that are like that.Parasomniac
Actually there are 10 :P FFXI is pretty open world if you ask me.
I guess because it's as linear as it gets? A straight line. Even most JRPG's have random dungeons with multiple paths that leads to chests and what not. Is there a world map you can travel across with tons of different areas? Not bashing, but wondering.killab2oo5
It isn't a straight line and there are alternate paths that lead to treasure chests guarded by more difficult monsters, nor is the necessarily one main path you have to take all the time.

The world map just gives you the illusion that it's non linear. In reality, there's still a line that you follow from start to finish in pretty much every FF game. Side content doesn't stop the main quest from being linear either. For example, in FFVII the path is still from the chocobo ranch to Junon, even if you can go to mount condor on the way.
I don't know how we can state this not having played it yet. The other FFs did have side stuff you could do, some alternate paths and some optional dungeons we get to look for. Soon enough we'll see if FF13 is the same way.
ActicEdge
FFXIII does have some optional places to go on Pulse, but the pacing and story of the game really prevent the game from allowing you to go to different areas earlier on.
If you're looking at FFXIII for side quests and things like that I would say look elsewhere unless you really like monster hunt systems.
I think the real question is, why was FFXIIs free-roaming style hated on from 2006-December 16th 2009.

I'm just waiting at this point. All this speculation is driving me crazy.

ArcticEdge, I have played and completed Final Fantasy XIII. In terms of side quests, there's pretty much the monster quests and chocobo digging game on Pulse. There are no side quests on Cocoon. Several of the monster quests in FFXIII are considered to be "optional bosses." There are also optional areas in FFXIII, such as the Mountain side, and there seems to be more to explore in the mines.

I know you finished it and I trust what you say. I just want to play it so I can see how it ompares to my FF experience. If you say monster quests and chocobo digging are the main side quests, I absolutely believe you. You've not led me wrong yet lol.
Because it is 20 years later and we are stepping back even by Final fantasy standards?Vandalvideo
FFXIII is no less linear than VII, VIII, or IX. It just offers less to do on the side.
In terms of dungeon design, FFXIII has some of the most substantial areas in the series.
Kashiwaba:
Right now the most hate from the fanbase is coming from a perceived "lack" of optional content, which is essentially complaining about a meal because you didn't like the dessert.

Well now you know 7. And 7 is saying that it's great. ;)
Hmm,because this is 2010 and not 1990?Arach666
Linear =/= bad.
Nonlinear =/= good.
Final Fanasy XIII offers an excellent non linear experience. Several improvements in this game are based on making that linear experience as seamless and cohesive as possible.

Final Fantasy XIII is not a perfect game. But if it is going to be criticized, I want it to be for real flaws and none of this "it doesn't fit my preferences therefore it's not any good" BS.
You mean your standards cuz I still didn't meet any guy who played the game and didn't like it I only see the haters on the internet.KashiwabaReread my post. I mean, comapred to other Final Fantasy games, there is less exploration.

Hmm...no game is perfect, that´s for sure.Still,I believe that many of the criticism I´ve seen so far(in reviews outside GS and long time fans opinions) is directed to the flaws of the game, and not necessarily "I don´t like it so I´ll bash it"kind of thing.
Because Final Fantasy 13 is multiplatform. Cows aren't necessarily FF fans, they're two seperate things that sometime intersect. Cows use to claim to be FF fans just because it was exclusive. Now that it's multiplat, it's almost seen as mor eof a 360 game (see Prototype), so therefore cows bash it. Cows will also be much more critical of MGS: Rising when that comes out. GamerX2311
No one see's it as more of a 360 game. That's the complete opposite. Everyone see's it as more of a PS3 game, mainly because FF is a PS game, and FFXIII for PS3 is actually out while the 360 version isn't. Not to mention the 360 version is the inferior version with like 50 discs....
