I mean if they were that good, why make sequels that people bad mouth.

Nostalgia. People like to complain. In 5 years, people will go on about how great this generation was, and how much the future one sucks.

Pretty much this. Though I genuinely think this generation has been lackluster; so much so, I'm not going to make the transition into 8th gen.
I don't put games on a pedestal just because they're older, that's the reason I'm not a Nintendo fan..... Problem?Deniable_Ops
What about their newer games then?
Most of the sequels to those old classics aren't made by the same people, and they aren't always targeting the same people. SAGE_OF_FIRE
Pretty much what he said.

What? What I meant was that one of the main reasons that Mario, Zelda and co. are so popular is because the franchises themselves are quite old and have a long history.[QUOTE="Heroldp813"]

Thanks, Had it for awhile now but still enjoy it as if it was the first day I got it.
Find me a game with a story BETTER than Planescape: Torment. Seriously, try. I'll be right here. Just waiting.........

Nostalgia can be blinding but a lot of the time older games are just designed better because they didn't have million dollar budgets and tons of tech to fall back on.
there were definitely plenty of great games in older generations that are still great today. its just that people are more likely to remember the good games while forgetting the bad ones and suddenly "they dont make games like they used to."
It depends. Some older games are glorified for the nostalgia. Depending on the game, it probably set the standard for a particular genre or introduced breakthrough systems that are still used in games today. For example, Goldeneye on the N64 is certainly not good by todays standards, but it set the bar for all shooters to come.
Go and play some Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Chrono Trigger, FFVII, Super Mario World then come here and ask that question again.
Why Are All Older Games Glorified?
Gue1
Thank you very much and I am in full agreement with the lineup you chose.
A lot of games are glorified because of nostalgia. People have fond childhood memories of playing through the older Super Marios and Final Fantasies, stuff like that. Sometimes different dev teams handle a game in a running series and it just feels like a different game for people's tastes.
I've been gaming since 1994 with the SNES and have owned every Nintendo handheld and console and every Sony console minus the 3DS and Wii... but I personally feel like the gaming industry as a whole gets better and better over time. I realize that long gone are the days of an abundance of solid JRPGs on consoles but you know what it came at a good trade-off as they found their niche platform on handhelds and do quite well on there.
Many times I've decided to go back and play an older game to find it isn't as much fun as I remember...
Also a crpg with better gameplay than Baldur's Gate 2 or Temple of elemental evil. Or an fps/rpg with better gameplay/story than Deus ex(1st one). The reason some people consider some older games better than modern day games is because in some cases they actually are better.Find me a game with a story BETTER than Planescape: Torment. Nostalgia. Period.
Our memories of those games are always better than the actual games were.
So many people rub one out to N64/PS1 games like they are the greatest games ever, but if you actually go back and PLAY them (I.E. not remakes, the actual games) you will realize how much they suck compared to games of today. I popped in some of my old PSone games, Spyro, MGS1, etc, and realized just how badly these games age to current standards.
I find it annoying too tbh, nothing new can be good. It always "sucks" compared to the old games
Most of the sequels to those old classics aren't made by the same people, and they aren't always targeting the same people. SAGE_OF_FIREExactly. Not to mention the publishers that are trying to force some aspects that weren't in the original game, like multiplayer, online coop, etc., which usually ends up ruining it. I think the older games that are great were glorified because they stood out at the time, which some still offer some engaging gameplay. I was playing NBA Jam TE on the Genesis with my son the other day and we had a blast! He loved it! He has his own 360, but we spent a few hours playing Jams, and enjoyed it. That's a gem.
I actually stilll can have a blast with many N64 games for some reason. But I know what you mean about the old games. But I still believe that the 'ideas' older games had were more creative than some of today's games.Nostalgia. Period.

Nostalgia is not the reason why! My first console was the playstaton. I got a game boy color, game boy advance and gamecube after. I ended up wanting to catch up on all the old games I missed out on by well, not being born. A LOT of games stand the test of time. Super Mario World, Super mario bros 3, Zelda OOT, the Final fantasy series Super metroid, are still masterpieces today. In my opinion, games are timeless art form, even when better graphics and different gameplay come out.YoshiYogurt
Well RPGs and platformers tend to age well because they are 2 of the slower genres to evolve... whereas you have other games like FPS or sports games and those tend to age poorly.
Damn all these nostalgia posts! :x
Of course that does account for a lot of instances when people praise old games, but great design can stand the test of time and there are plenty of older games that prove that.
SMB3, SMW, Yoshis Island, Link to the Past, Punch Out, Super Turbo, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, SotN, Super Metroid, MGS2, NGB...
Just a few older gen games off the top of my head that are insanely well designed. I can always have a great time playing these games.
Nostalgia can cause me to take a trip down memory lane and spend a few moments with a beloved game from my youth, but I wont be sinking in any significant time and coming back again and again like I do with the games mentioned above.

You are correct. I have played N64 games, PSone games, SNES games, Sega Genesis games in the passed 5 years, and they just aren't as AWESOME as I remember. I used to LOVE Mario and Zelda games but I try and play them now and I just want to stop playing after 5 minutes. I picked up Twilight Princess and put it back down after completing the first temple. The games just don't hold up as well as I thought they would.
It really is just pure nostalgia.
Stories need not age poorly.
Characterization need not age poorly.
Level design need not age poorly.
Balanced combat need not age poorly.
Pacing need not age poorly.
The little loving details of a world need not age poorly.
"Epicness" is relative to scale and need not age poorly.
Well drawn 2D anything need not age poorly.
Old 3D was ugly then, and its ugly now. Though now it comes off as both barren and ugly.
Though if you play old 3D games for a considerable legnth of time, you begin to spot the work that was done and where the time was spent in development, which gets you most of the way toward appreciating the games again.
[QUOTE="metal_zombie"]i played chrono trigger couple of years ago it's a great gamesandbox3d
I skipped out on FFIX when it first came out, but decided to check it out a couple of years ago. So far its been my favorite RPG that I played this gen lol.
It's kinda sad that rpgs haven't progress like other genres. Case in point FF13 has CG, voice acting better graphics and hardware but in my book I rather play chrono triggerI dont particulary glorify older games as much as I criticize modern mainstream games. While there have been several improvements this gen, namely in distribution and online features, the design of games themselves have fallen backwards into a bottomless abyss where design gets only worse and worse.
Overly scripted events and set pieces, shallow stories shoehorned in and forced upon us, cover systems, RPGs plagued by mmorpg combat and Tank/healer/dps trinities with emphasis on having inflated life bars and outlasting opponents as opposed to countering them with clever spell usage and positioning, cinematic gameplay, QTEs, 2 weapon rules, which results in you mostly being forced to use the weapons the developers wanted you to use, matchmaking online instead of server lists, health regeneration meaning games are a lot less punishing and it really doesnt matter how much damage you take as long as you dont die oh and much less map control in fps, perks, removal of depth, perma death being a thing mostly in the past, party members and characters being resurrected once you touch them or once combat ends with a minimal/non-existant penalty, ect.
This gen is a golden age for indie devs and a dark age for mainstream devs.

Game with better story than PS:T? I guess the Gabriel Knight series rivals it, and so does Homeworld.
RPG with better gameplay than BG2? Ultima 7, Arcanum
FPS/RPG with better story than Deus Ex? System Shock 2

I don't know about that, man. I can agree that a lot of things in Ultima 7 are vastly better than in BG2, but the gameplay ain't one of them. The amount of micromanagement you have to do can make anyone that doesn't have patience kill themselfs out of stress. The combat is automatic and you can't exactly control it.
Temple of Elemental Evil has a far better combat system than both of them.

Ultima 7 did have rubbish combat, but to be frank I dont mind micromanagement and the gameplay in Ultima 7 was not the combat, it was the interactivity with the world.
But I will agree with you on ToEE. No RPG has combat that rivals or even gets anywhere near Temple of Elemental Evil. It is untouchable. And is a personal reminder that Turn Based Combat>>>>>Other forms of combat for RPGs, especially RTWP combat.
2nd post nailed it, but nostalgia. I remember playing Resident Evil on the original Playstation. I was so blown away. Now, I find it almost unplayable.

Second post nailing it, my ass. Like Foxhound said, the theory that nostalgia in a absolute way, is the reason why people glorify older games is simply wrong. That's a matter of fact, not opinion. Relatively speaking, for some people out there, your opinion is correct, without a doubt.
It's a surprise that you, of all people, would agree with something so ridiculously wrong.

Ultima 7 definitity is vastly superior wen it comes to the detail that was put in the world you play in. The game was so ahead of its time, it's mind boggling. If i didn't have 100 games that i needed to finish (ain't buying anything until i finish every game i have collected), i'd replay this game.
Yeah, i love ToEE, not because of the story, but because each quest was a well designed adventure of its own, the combat was also perfect. It was like i was playing what DnD was always meant to be, to put it in words, i think it is the best representation of DnD on the PC. If only BG2 had the combat system of ToEE, then i would probably love that game aswell.
