When you're losing so badly like MS is you can't use actual numbers sold because they look embarrassing next your competition's.

Because now they want to change the narrative, saying that sales don't matter, typical Microsoft.

They do it to hide weaker sales but it's also true that in the near future retail sales will be an ancient metric.

I think you're focusing on the wrong bit and really mean to question why they're counting players instead of sales. So players vs sales, not sold vs crosses.

Microsoft didnt even use the word in the title, in the article from the thread you're responding to. The reporter did.
