I went to Blockbuster guess what? They didnt have any blu-ray or Hd dvd's to rent,. I think thats a huge flaw what makes itworse is that the regular dvds to rent were all sold out.

Of course they won't sell, who the hell wants to buy a movie for $30, and the majority of people don't own HDTVs. (which is too bad, I love my HDTV, the PS3 and 360 look fantastic on it, and the blu-ray movies are mind-blowing, but still...$30..)

I also think DVD will hold them both off. HDTVs had less than a 10% penetration rate when Blu Ray came out. I think that an HD media format will have to be launched when HD is the standard in order to be successful.

Blockbuster has blu-ray movies...and most people buying new TV's are buying HDTV's. If you have an HDTV, why wouldn't you want a next-gen format player?

Nope....one of these two...and it looks like Blu-ray will win this generation.

The only competition it will eventually have is "download" at HDTV quality.

DVD is living on borrowed time, only because the new HD players are so expensive. There are several "classic" series like LOTR and the Matrix and others that I'm holding off on because I don't want to pay for DVD when HDTV versions are just around the corner...I'm not the only one. HDTV is getting more affordable for the public and as their TV's die they will replace them with the new format and then DVD will not only not make sense....it will look worse...due to upscanning, than they ever did before.

Just out of curiousity though...what's it like to be in the same camp as those people long ago that thought that "talking pictures" and "color television" was just a passing fad? :D

The real reason is that it isn't easier to use than dvd's. Unlike the dvd which is succesful now, it requires most people to upgrade to a hi definition tv. I think though overtime, they will eventually sell.

I figured it was because most people already had a massive DVD collection, didn't feel buying yet another player, rebuying what little of said collection that is available in HD formatting, and didn't want topay a higher price for each movie...

Crazy talk! Where you went wrong was switching from laser disk. It was good enough for my granpappy and it's good enough for us! Almost 1 gigof 365sharp lines of interlaced goodness and extra cases are as easy to get as pizza boxes.

Heritic. I'm still buying everything off of Ebay on Beta. I've got Empire Strikes Back on it 's way next week. I can't wait to see that Luke finds out that Obi-Wan is his actual Father and that he kills that naughty Darth Vader for ever.

Those two formats are a Trojan horse to get people used to paying 30 bucks a movie instead of 20 just like gamers are supposed to get used to paying 60 bucks a game instead of 50. Well I ain't having none of it!

Are you buying Nintendo cartridges too? I hear those are pretty cheap. Let me know when Halo 3 or Bioshock hits the Atari 2600. :D

I remember a time, not too long ago, when vhs tapes were the rage and Blockbuster would not carry DVD's because it was a new format and not too many people had dvd players. How times have changed....do they even carry vhs tapes any more? Both Blu Ray and HD-DVD are in very early infancy. This format war is going to take a few YEARS to settle out...so be patient. Online services from Blockbuster and netflix can easily solve your problem.

I went to the blockbuster close to my house and they have Blu-Rays for rent but no hd-dvds. Blu-Ray seems to be winning the format war.
