You've never seen shadows cross one another? There only needs to be two separate light sources and then you can make shadows cross. If, like you said, were able to "block out" all the light from creating a shadow (like in the OP image), it would be completely black and you wouldn't be able to see anything.
It also manifests with single light sources as well, with the effect of "bending" around objects:
The character model's lack of shadow is questionable at best. As long as they are lit up, they should have some sort of shadow. Its the phenomenon of light.
I wouldn't say those pictures had the same shade as the picture, I know that does happen though and if anything it would be very light.
