Ok, so it was a silly question lol, but i want to hear you guy's opinion. Why do you think the console holders down allow mods like on PC? I would love to be able to Mod Mass Effect, GTA4, InFamous, and UC2 Take these Fallout 3 mods for example, wouldnt that be awesome on consoles???

there's the problem of hacking and i think the difference in architecture makes it hard and i mean, it's going to be a pain to download the mods on pc, then put it into usb, bring it over to the console, then install it.

it would be. unfortunately, the nature of the console as a kind of closed-box, closed-coding computer means that they are inherently unfriendly to mods. add to the fact that almost anything you can access and download onto most consoles is strictly controlled through their producers, and they become even less feasible. after all, a mod is content that ms/sony/nintendo cant profit from in most cases., since they are generally created by fan communities. not only that, but having not originated from certified publishers and programmers, they carry a risk of holding glitches or malicious software that could be damaging to the console, which creates an avenue for lawsuit against the console companies.

i dont think that is all of the reasons why, but i think its some of the more significant ones. its a unique combination of companies wanting to protect possible streams of revenue, avoid unnessecary legal liability, and control content their consumers are exposed to. this isnt inherently bad. its good and responsible business, and for those looking for the ability to enjoy mods, you only need a gaming pc.

its my understanding that the ps3 version of ut3 supports mods, i have no idea how this works (perhaps somebody can expand on this) but if so that is a very progressive concept for consoles.

then now the devs/publishers have the control over the contents of the mod! that ruins half the purpose, especially if it's something oblivion or gta

1. Opening up a console to the scope of things that a PC faces. - Which also relates to the console makers themselves wanting full control over the system and what it does. Such as Microsoft, who are notorious for this. 2. Hardware - a console isn't simply going to be able to run a variety of mods from the go - some of which go beyond the system requirements of the said game. Architecture is different, and things like UT3s baking proccess can only be done so much. 3. Consoles simply aren't a developmen't platform. They are there for the streamlined gaming experience, if you want to be creative, there are games with their own toolsets to induldge in. Is there a point releasing an SDK for a game not on the PC platform?

Because A. You don't have a platform for sharing and installing them, B. the average owner doesn't have the tools to make mods for console games, and C. There is no interface to speak of.

well yea, thats true. I think that is something sony/ms should think about next gen when creating the console. Maybe create mod program into the OS maybe, that runs like Modnation racers, or Roku on 360, where you take game assets and mod them based on your creativity like in FM3. Like you could edit any outfit in a TPS/RPG/Action adventure, or vehicles in certain games............stuff like that. That way, it is somewhat controlled..............i dunno, maybe its wishful thinking :P

Well even though its a nice idea, it is impossible - all the games have their own engines, things simply dont translate so easily - each engine is very different to another

My friend had mods in Halo 2, although it required him to mod his xbox to do so. To answer your question though, the tools needed aren't available.

Cause you guys aren't worthy of that privilege. It's reserved exclusively for the PC Gaming master race and the 7 PS3 gamers that bought UT3.

Because MS, Sony and Nintendo don't want you to.

And now they don't want PC gamers to have them either.

It's all about the money.

The open nature of the pc also allows for easier hacking so it is an advantage with a price. A lot of good online pc games have been ruined by cheating.

Don't worry the best mods become incorporated into Valve games so you really don't lose much.

Considering console games are coded to fully utilize the systems capabilities; one would think adding to that would cause performance problems.

Because there is no freedom on the consoles, also MS has to pay money to host the files needed so even if it was possible it would be really expensive for the mod creator.

Freedom to mod also means freedom to hack and ruin an online game.

And where would they be ruining games?

Considering the large amount of mods I have played, I must be missing out on something, with all this hacking going on of which you speak.

With so much user made content of stunning quality for so many games, I guess this striking negative *should* be making more of an impression on me.

Right?

Maybe im just not PC gaming enough :?

Fix; add in a sort button for servers which sorts stock servers and modded servers. Most servers on the PC has this. It is the bloody hammer icon.

Theres your answer right there. WHo woould pay to host the mods and give bandwidth to download them without getting $$$. The companies wouldn't do it without being able to milk consolites one way or another.

and to be quite honest there are alot of crap mods out there. Luckily if you check the community out they will generally point you in the right direction. If you've never used mods though, you don't know what you're missing. I loved MTW2 for example, but some of the mods out there turned a great game into something truely jawdropping. (thank you King Kong for Stainless steel and the Third Age if you should happen to see this!)

It's certainly something that is possible, I think it's more a matter of expectation and the type of users on each platform. Most PC gamers absolutely expect user created mods, and console users don't. Game companies are always happy to give a consumer as little as they can for their money. Not to mention that even on many games that would prefer there not be user generated mods, enterprising programmers find a way anyhow. That's the nature of the PC beast.

It's possible (see UT3 on ps3, there was talk of Bioware and Sony working on it for Dragon Age) but there's one major reason that ppl are forgetting. Publishers and platform makers don't want you get content for free that they can charge you for. I'm when anyone can make quality mods that trump the skimpy dlc that they charge us an arm and a leg for, it diminishes the value of dlc. Why pay for something you can get for free? Publishers and to an extent MS and Sony who get money from transactions on psn and live stand to make no money from user generated content. I don't have a link but MS has said they want buyers to get used to paying for everything even when developers like Valve and Epic want to give the content away for free. Sony is more open about mods and ugc (LBP, UT3) but Sony still gets money from publishers for all the dlc downloaded on psn so they also have incentive to keep mods from ps3. Gamers should get used to these publishers and platform holders charging for things that have traditionally been free *cough*playing online, xbl *cough*.

Another issue is that the consoles are more closed platforms that don't allow you access to the files on the disc. Consoles also lack the interface (software and mouse and keyboard) that makes mod creation easier.
