I understand why consoles can't mix with pc in terms of online play. There's no denying that the pc is far superior (in fps at least) to the consoles. I even understand why the wii would make is difficult to mix with the other two consoles... some might find the wiimote to have an unfair advantage. The thing that confuses me (and there's probabaly a really logical reason) is why can't owners of both the 360 and ps3 play together online. I don't see any form of advantage one way or the other.

So yeah why can't the two consoles play with eachother?

Technically none, but the benefit for each company to combine their systems (as in the work that would require) plus the potential harm of having these systems side by side makes it (probably) a non profitable idea...

I always thought it would be cool to have cross platforming tournaments just to see what happens. I'd enjoy a competition of CoD or Battlefield and the two teams are 360 users vs PS3 users.

The Dreamcast was cross platform with the PC. Fond memories of Quake 3 Arena.

I've always wondered this as well, but I think part of that deals with being a little older and not having a problem buying both systems. It would be nice if the developer had some say. Super Street Fighter 4? Cross platform online would only help that game.

I'm sure a pc person will come in here and explain how it has something to do with p2p and dedicated servers.

PC and consoles is a different story but ps3 and xbox controllers are almost identical... Its just about which one you prefer and theres no such thing as FACT when it comes to which controller is better.

theres nothing better on the dualshock 3

bad triggers and even the trigger add on doesn't help much

before you say DPAD they already fixed this on the new xbox controllers.

It's MS fault, not sony.

With a system with stuff like Konami ID they can perfectly go crossplatform, but MS wants the monopoly of the online service in a way where developer rights over o nline stuff are gone.

It's completely subjective and just because you prefer 360 controller doesn't make it fact. I prefer PS3 controller, but I know it would be foolish to say it's objectively better.

What do you mean by "pay to play"? Believe it or not, but sometimes sacrifices are good for a business as a whole. If there was cross platform gaming--something that could happen if enough consumer demanded it--it would force other means of "one-upping" the competitor.

I really think that if Sony and MS charged the same amount for online play, it would give devs the right to choose whether or not the game would be playable cross-platform. With game development costs rising, it would benefit the developers, which in turn would help the industry out.

No it isn't :| Playing side by side for fps's I actually prefer the PS3 controller slightly more.. Not to mention the 360 controller is god awful for fighters and pretty much demands for you to have a joystick... They are both good controllers with their own drawbacks, its based upon preference more then anything.

Chances are they will start charging next gen, and if that saved me from buying more than one console, then in ways I'm all for it. That sounds like a "what-the-f" statement, but it would force pubs/devs to really put out quality titles. This is why I tend to prefer the Sony side of things most of the time, because they have a focus on quality titles within the company. Of course it is all business in a lot of respects, but when I see the money I spend--in a positive way of looking at things--going into R&D for games, essentially, that seems like healthy business. When I see MS, on the other hand, spend 500 million dollars on trying to force a new product to market when there are next to no games being shown for the core audience that initially bought their product? Perhaps I'm just getting old.

Actually there is a difference. The 360 controller was built with the FPS in mind. The dualshock was built with ZERO regard for fps games. It comes down to the analog sticks, and in this regard the 360 pad is superior. If FPS games were popular in Japan, I'd imagine the Dualshock would have changed by now. I'm actually surprised that the DS design has not changed to support the evolving game design.

Are people paying more for this? Or the exact same amount? Is there any premium from this cross platform functionality. As in did they earn more given the costs involved in making it happen. Given we have not seen anything since I think you have your answer.

..

Besides, thats just one of the reasons you would not want PSN and XBL head to head..

Perhaps thumb placement. Holding each controller in the usual manner, where do your thumbs usually end up? On the face. On the 360 controller, the left analog is under your left thumb. On the PS3, the D-Pad is there (a holdover from the pre-Dual-Shock days). So analog movement may seem more natural on the 360 because of this focus on placement.

I don't see any form of advantage one way or the other.

mannyboo22
I think the main reason is both Microsoft and Sony want their players to get their version of the game. By keeping the walled gardens close, it makes friends who have different versions of the game decide. Does A buy B's version, does B buy A's version, or do they simply agree not to play each other? They're banking on one of the first two--more licensing money for them.

If I could have always played with my 360 friends on my PS3, I would have NEVER purchased a 360 at all. It was literally the selling point to the console for me. Both Sony and M$ know that letting players cross platforms online will result in less sales for them. Obviously, that's not very good business practice.

It's not. People think the 360 is better because it feels better when you hold it. The PS3 Dualshock 3 is 8bit vs 6bit on the 360, and it has less analog delay. Fact.

I did not not know that. What is the difference in 8bit vs 6bit? I can't see it making a difference, with all the multiplatform games, anyways. The very reason the 360 is better in terms of fps play is because the controller was designed for them. Like I said earlier, the dual shock was designed all the way back in 1997!!(it could have been 1996). Now, console fps games were not really the "thing" back then, and the ds was designed with more eastern oriented game design in mind. That is also a fact. MS actually listened to the complaints and gamer feedback in designing the 360 pad. So in a sense that is proof, as well.

I used to state that the ps3 pad was "overall" better, because of the faulty 360 dpad, but supposedly that has been fixed(i'm yet to test it out with Street Fighter).

Well the shape of the DS3 is similiar to the PS controller. But it's not quite the same.

The 360 is more comfortable when you hold it. And it is very ergonomical for FPS and Racing games. Precise it is no more than the DS3 though. It's just preference.

maybe it's more comfortable for you, but this is absolutely insane. I've got a 360 and a ps3, I prefer the 360 controller for racing games and the ps3 controller for everything else. There's just zero ground for absolute statements regarding one over the other. In all honesty my favorite controller of all time is the SNES controller but that doesn't mean it's the best ever. Pull your heads out of your butt.

It's very possible, it's just not likely to ever happen.

Dude, me too. The only thing i want is a bigger DS3. i'm fine with the design i just want the controller to be about as big as the 360 controller. Maybe fix the triggers so they dont "squish" but its whatever.

At least I qualified my judgment with a "maybe". As I own both, I use both types, and it's rather a tossup to me, probably because I naturally twist my left wrist slightly to easily reach the left analog stick on the PS3, but they both work for me. In any event, some third-party companies allow gamers the option to "switch hit" and use a PS3 controller with a 360 layout and vice versa.

Lol at what this thread came to be about. DS3 is better: Symmetry is better for left handed gamers ( + customizable controls). I actually have a DS3 controller where the L2 and R2 buttons don't "squish". they actually click, like a button. What I dont get about the argument about the triggers on the PS3, On call of duty, all they do is throw grenades. THATS IT! They don't have a huge roll in the overall performance in online play.

It's MS fault, not sony.

With a system with stuff like Konami ID they can perfectly go crossplatform, but MS wants the monopoly of the online service in a way where developer rights over o nline stuff are gone.

blitzcloud

yeah man Preach the false information...remind me when did sony put forth that cross platform plan the comprehensive one where they approached Microsoft and microsoft denied them?
