Why can't ps3 and 360 play together online?

Wasn't shadowrun a game that allowed pc gamers to play against 360 gamers?

It's not profitable for both the X360 and the PS3 to be able to play against each other. As for the controllers being better and worse, it's all about preference. Since I know many people with ps3 controlelrs that are way better than other people with X360 controllers, and vice-versa. It's all preferecne, one is not better than the other. :)
