Why did Mark Cerny Mention 8k with PS5's info reveal? ANSWER!!!

Because that was going to be MS's big marketing point for Nextbox power at E3!

I see so many of you guys confused on here why he even mentioned this when most people either don't care or aren't even interested in anything over 4k.

Well it's not a coincidence that Sony dropped this news the same day MS had their XO and dropped the SAD price.

Sony was killing 2 birds with one stone.

Simultaneously taking any wind out of the pitiful SAD box release and stealing MS's thunder from E319 that they were going to use for NextBox to hype it's power and the same group who are criticizing Mark Cerny for mentioning 8k now would have been EATING IT UP if MS was the first one to speak on it 100%.

The only reason Mark mentioned 8k WAS to be the first to speak on it, thus taking the wind out of any buzz MS might have had saying it during E3. Now that big marketing pitch MS had to hype NextBox will simply have gamers asking, "Ok, and what else?".

lol we will still see it, but MS was 100% going to push the 8k narrative for power with NextBox at E3.

The last thing MS expected was for Sony to, not only, beat them to the punch with an impressive specs dump for PS5 but also beat them to the punch for speaking on 8k and to a lesser extent ray-tracing as well.

Guaranteed marketing pushes MS expected to have for NextBox specs and power to get hype over PS5 going into E3.

• High speed SSD? Yep, gone
• Ray-tracing? Yep, gone
• 8k? Yep, gone

At he minimum, these 3 things were going to be BIG for MS to hype Next box. They can still mention them but the shock value is effectively 0 after Sony beat them to the punch.

This is also why Sony elected to skip E3 to randomly drop info and sabotage any moves MS tries to make before they can make them.

Sony must have forgot that MS supported HDMI 2.1 with x1x. Doubt Sony would be talking about weaker specs knowing MS is already using the tech. So chalk this up to selling new 8k tv's and future proofing PS5 which the PS4Pro didn't do.

The next Xbox never had a chance. PS5 is destined to destroy it.

Xbox never seems to know what direction they want to take anyway. They want to have their fingers in every pie next gen. Do they want to be a console maker? Do they want to be a big game streaming platform? Do they want to be third party? Sony hasn't seemed to lose focus so far at least.

Because its a marketing buzzword to give the impression to small minded people that it's going to be better than it will be. If past generations are anything to go by then PS5 still won't be native 4k + >30fps in most games and I'd be surprised if most games even reach 4k at all because as we've seen with older console generations what it says on the box and what these consoles go on to mostly do are two completely different things.

Heres one thing you can expect either way though: very dull, very samey, overly cinematic "AAA" games. If you're into that and I know a lot of you are here, then you're in for a treat.

Comparatively, Super Mighty Xbox Anaconda will swallow whole the WeakSauce that will be PS Jive. lol

They mentioned it because its a resolution sells. Also because technically the HDMI 2.1 can candle 8K/60... It has nothing to do with games supporting it. You will be lucky to get 4K/60 with AAA games... Expect a 4K/30 console and the SSD being faster than current PC's is because Zen 2 will support PCI 4.0 which will support higher speeds than we currently have available but once it is on PC then console will again be slower due to the higher priced PC parts.

What you guys need to be worried about is the storage SIZE!... SSD is great but 1TB is barely enough now for power users I can't imagine next generation games that will probably be 50-100Gb per game.

A PS5 supporting 8K/60 is no different than a GTX 760 supporting 4K/60.

RX Vega 56 at ~1500Mhz (11 TFLOPS) with Vega 64's memory bandwidth OC can handle Forza Motorsport 7 at 8K 60 hz.

Assume Sony's Gran Turismo Sport is optimized** for AMD's GCN architecture like MS's Forza Motorsport 7.

**Higher Compute/TMU path and minimize ROPS path usage, software tile render with L2 cache boundary limits.

MS DirectML (common rapid pack math API access) is not used.

Cut down Vega II 56 with cheaper Vega 64's HBM v2 config is not used.

Ye, to know that the PS5 will upscale games to 8k is really impressive stuff.

Vega 56 at 1500Mhz can do 4K 60 hz without PC's diminishing return extreme settings from PC's gimping marketing (NVIDIA Gameworks) and upgraded ZEN CPU changes game world's simulation scale.

It will be mostly for movies. I'm ok with that though. Native 4k even quality checkerbording with higher quality assets is what I'm looking forward to. Can't wait to see the improvements in AI and Physics.

64 ROPS with 256 bit GDDR6-14000 would be a limit just like PC's RTX 2070 and RTX 2080.

It would take major innovation to design 128 ROPS with 256 bit GDDR6-14000.

Expect NAVI replacing RX-580 to be 64 ROPS Vega II 56 at 1500Mhz with 256 bit GDDR6-14000.

What are you talking about?... Out of the last 10 AAA games how many can run at 4K/60 on a Vega 56 even with dropping settings drastically?... Dirt 2.0 is a 1/10 rare game that runs well its not a example of what will follow not to mention that developers seem to very much on the path of push graphics on console and hit a steady 30FPS.

We as PC gamers are aware of easy to run games and lowering settings but consoles and PC are not the same thing and the developers don't target 60FPS often they would rather push extra graphical features and seeing as Ray Tracing is one of those features mentioned by Cerny good luck getting 60FPS at 4K with exclusives also.

HDMI 2.1 should be supporting FreeSync, hence locked 60 hz is not required

Meh, I'm not even interested in PS5 specs, I just need to know what newer exclusives will it offer and my PC will be next-gen for a very long time. I'm not even worried about SSD cause I already install one into my PS4 (SSD 1TB) but including one right out the gate shouldn't be a problem with the pricing now they are getting cheaper.

Also, 8K/60fps is just an excuse to hype the casuals console gamers in order to buy 8KTV and we haven't hit 4K mainstream. (yet)

@davillain-: I'm just curious as to what they launch games will look like, the actual hardware details don't matter to much to me to be honest. The speculation and pre-launch hype is more fun than the actual spec reveal by the time the console is out in Q4 2020 the 10-12TFLOP count will be much less impressive as it is now especially for PC gamer BUT I will still get a PS5 simply because of the exclusives.

OLED is not suitable for desktop PC usage... I have my PC in my living room, where i use that TV ONLY for the sole purpose of a 75-inch monitor... I do more stuff on my PC than browse internet and then play some games ya know...?

LG and Samsung branded LED (not talking about OLED, mind you) TV's are quite a joke compared to Sony. LG is cheating with pixels since like 2016 or so and Samsung is just a waste of money whatever model you choose.
Now kicks-in the real irony though, Sony uses LG factories/tech to make panels for their TV's. This just shows that eventhough LG has all the tech, they just don't give a ****...

I thought the same thing yet here they are trying to sell a $250 console with no disc drive 2 months before they announce next gen consoles. All they're doing is confusing consumers.

For marketing purposes like you said and also to take the wind out of the sails for MS at E3. MS can't go on stage and announce anything higher than 8K and Sony knows it.

Even if the best we'll get out of PS5 is 8K upscaled which I believe, it's still a strong marketing point. They are now the first guys to announce an 8K console (whether it's real or not) and MS has to scramble to look for something else to market the next Xbox with otherwise they end up with a "me too" scenario. It's a genius marketing move that most people on SW aren't smart enough to grasp. People on SW are only looking at the numbers and not looking for the reason behind those numbers.
