Why did MS even call it the 360?

Why not just name them the Xbox Core, Xbox Premium and Xbox Elite?

Why even bother with 360?  That would be like apple naming the ipod a Ipod 360 Nano, Ipod 360 Shuffle etc...

IMO everyone is gonna start calling the 360 the Xbox Elite.

360 will fade out.  

It was called the 360 based on MS's premise that it was meant to be the complete or encompassing console for all things gaming, like you in the middle of a circle. Thus, 360. Plus there had to be some ability to distinguish the Xbox from the Xbox 360 and tagging a subtitle beneath doesn't exactly equate to good marketing and PR. 360 is fine.Basinboy

It's because people don't usually use the terms "core, elite, and premium" to describe their 360. I call mine the "360," not the xbox 360 premium. And, if I get an elite, I'll still continue calling it a 360.

By the way, they used 360 to mean a full turn, like a revolution.

Actually, I'm sure that MS paid some psycholinguistic analyst of marketing guru to find a term that would sell 47% more units based on a name that could easily be memorized and identified as an electronic product.

No there were 359 Xboxes sold in Japan prior to the new one so they just went with 360. 

But seriously the name Xbox 360 is just so terrible in my mind. I lost all hype for it after I heard the name because of the mass market casual idiocy it implys. extreme box three hundred and sixty....... wtf?!?!

Me and my friends all call the Xbox 360 "the 360." So...just because you don't call it the 360 doesn't mean everyone else does too. 

microsoft says it's because the 360 is a complete entertainment package for 360 degrees.  which turns out it is definately doing, the 360 has definately became a source for entertainment over the year it's been out with everything available on the marketplace and with the ability to connect to pc's and listen to/watch stuff on ur comp through ur 360 and tv.

But we all know it's because xbox2 would sound inferior to the PS3
