Seriously i remember last GEN, Americans loved the PS2, it was the most sold system even tho it was the weaker/ the online wasnt as good compared to live etc.

But this gen americans totally ignored the ps3, even with its Free Online ( and i thought this was going to be a strong feature since the american economy is pretty bad) lots of good exclusives+fps etc.

Why, did americans abandon Sony this gen?

The 360 came out first, was cheaper, and had an excellent marketing campaign.

These things certainly helped MS gain ground in the U.S. But, the U.S. isn't all of the Americas, and i don't know how the other countries lean on console preference.

From my experience one of the most common reasons amongst friends is because 360 came out first. When it was time for other people to get a console they looked to what their friends owned. Most owned 360s while none owned PS3s so most started picking 360s to game on.

I ment the US. Yeah but what about now? why is the 360 still selling more than the ps3, when the ps3 has far more exclusives+free online? What is MS doing right that Sony isnt?

Sony lost America? ughhhh, you do know that sony owned the gaming market for 2 generations right, just because something else came "which was way cheaper" and out sold it doesn't mean their doom. what is this? Also like a user said, the 360 came out first and everyone grab one, now most people i know own a ps3 over a 360 but back in the day i was the only one who had a ps3. i'm sure who ever gets their console out first will have a better edge, "don't think the wii-u really counts since its just now doing what the ps3 and 360 have been doing, but we will see what it really can do"

Pretty much what he said. Some people don't want to admit it, but releasing first gives any competitor a powerful advantage in the long run. This is why, despite all the bells and whistles on the Vita, it has an uphill battle against 3DS and smartphones.

all you have to do is look at the game library after the ps3 had been out for 2 years to see why they lost in n.a.

people want to make this all complex but the reason is pretty simple, it's the international conspiracy to destro..... errr... wait not the conspiracy!!! i meant the games!!!!i didn't say anything bout no conspiracy!!! and i was hardly even a part of it! ... wait! .. i was not a part of it at all!

cuz there was nothing to be a part of!!! phew, that was a close one.

In fact I had a friend talking to me just today, who was considering buying 360 again, he already owned one but traded it in for a PS3, so he can play with friends on COD and Battlefield because he knows more people that will be playing those games on 360 and none that will be playing them on the PS3

Well, I think it comes back to releasing first and the online gaming trend. Gaming is more connected these days, so getting a console your friends have may make more sense even if it has less games you are interested in.

More people have 360s in the U.S., so more poeple get 360s to play with their friends. I don't know why the ps3 outsells the 360 in most other countries though, as one might think the same trends would be universal.

Also, I think there were assumptions this gen that Sony wouldn't cater to the western gamer as much as MS would, but that's obviously not the case. I think next gen should be interesting.

Because brand loyalty and fanboyism really only exists on the internet.

For years 360 had more games, better games, better online service and... this is probably stretching it a bit but 360 is American. Some people would rather support American businesses than foreign ones.

PS3 came out a year too late.

PS3 was too expensive @ $599.

360 does shooters better.

Wii does casuals better.

what the heck is even made in america now? steel and pop culture?

if you wanted to buy all american goods you could not even live in a cardboard box since they are all made in other countries.

Graphics. Lets be honest, it's one of the major reasons we upgrade consoles. PS3 was suppose to be a super computer, once it wasn't mixed with the fact Gears of War looked fantastic it lost all it's pre release hype. Gears release a week before it and looking much better than anything it had really hurt the PS3.

If something like KZ2 or GT5 was a launch title people would have gladly paid that $599.

No surprise there. Noticed you changed you're sig from you're spreadsheet, wonder why? Anyways, Sony lost America because 360 came first, has better games that appeal to the majority of American gamers, and XBL is better than PSN. Plus the system was cheaper which also helped.

wait so the ps2 beat the xbox and gamecube and dreamcast last gen and the playstation beat the nintendo the year before that, just because sony goofed on how they launch the ps3, sony is now doomed in America?, gosh i love system wars sometimes

because people prefer the 360. and that's because it has a vastly bigger library of great games, which is a fact that also happens to upset a lot of ppl ;)

you don't have to use hypothetical situations if that is how you actually feel lol.

I'm not inferring that people buy completely american made products but I've seen posts on this board that support my theory that there are people who stay away from japanese media simply because it is japanese, games included. That's obviously not the #1 reason why 360 sold more or even anywhere close to it but I still felt like the sentiment is notable enough to have brought it up.

then why is WII a japanese made product the number 1 selling console right now?..yeah, what your saying makes no sense. America isn't as xenophobic as japanese people, if a products good and fun and reliable they will buy it, no matter where its made from.

I love how you guys are treating this as if I said this is the sole reason. I said that it isn't even close to being the reason why, no where near it. Gotta love SW, people sure know how to cherry-pick.

I've already listed my reasons but I'll list them again in case anyone doesn't feel like scrolling up.

early gen 360 > early gen PS3 because of price, online services, amount of games, quality of games, dev support, etc.

M$ spends billions literally on marketing a few games and thee console, they only focus on 3 franchises and 1 perireal (500 mil on kinect alone). Sony has well over 25-30 1st party devs 40+ franchises, now 2 portables, a last gen system still selling, an the move.. They don't have as much money and they choose to spend it on more games as opposed to marketing. When you look at thy you would think Americans Would be eating the ps3 up, but they watch a lot of tv.... Ms is king of tv adverts - gears3 commercial was played 2 times each commercial break every commercial break last week. The mainstream doesnt go online to research games they get suckered in by ads, and moms see kinect on opera. Its really messed up if you ask menbecause Sony has been treating gamers right this gen, by focusing on the games, but with out halo and gears that appeal to the bro no thinking just shoot and blow things up crowd ms will when the pie here everytime. I ask any friends wh they have xbox instead of ps3, and they uses to say well theres not many games for it, yet when I would bring up all the exclusives the would be like , I never hear of those. Again America is run by he tv... It's a big popularity and trend contest.. It doesn't matter if you have a better product only that u waste your money on ad space.

Why do people think in such absolutes?

Sony didn't lose America. Last time I checked, they're still doing pretty well. Yes, they're behind the 360, but really not by much.

I'm assuming that your statement is a bit of hyperbole. That's cool.

To answer your question, Sony isn't doing as much advertising. They also don't seem to "get" online as well as MS does. Sure PSN is free, but people that choose gaming as a hobby know that there's more to value than a price tag. Only the rabid minority will complain about cost.

I think MS does a better job of putting personalities behind their brand. Kevin Butler can be really funny at times, but he's a throwaway caricature. XBL's community managers are at many, if not all of the trade events. They have specific names, not some near-anonymous community manager of the week. And they're active on the social media, whether that's broadcasting through podcasts or blogs or Twitter or Google +.

Sony's not doing anything wrong really. They're just stuck in their traditional, Japanese console way of viewing the industry.

The Wii took hold of the casual audience, that was what made the PS2 such a success. Many newer gamers have preferred the XBox brand for a ling time now.

you could ask the same question about the UK, most holiday seasons over here the 360 outsells the Ps3 at least 2-1,one year it was 3-1 and when the s model dropped sales increased 1000%, last gen everbody over here was all about the playstation, now it's all about the xbox,it's easy to see why over here though, we are very shrewd about our purchases and we won't pay double for what is essentially an equal peice of kit and until the recent price drop a top end 360 still cost 50 quid less than a bottom end Ps3,when the ps3 released it was 220 quid cheaper for a top end 360 (premium).

first it was the price, now mostly due to poor marketing.

No surprise there. Noticed you changed you're sig from you're spreadsheet, wonder why? Anyways, Sony lost America because 360 came first, has better games that appeal to the majority of American gamers, and XBL is better than PSN. Plus the system was cheaper which also helped.

I changed it because lems were belly aching about it, but funny they made no mention of it being short a PS3 exclusive too wonder why?..anyways...

[QUOTE="Solid_Tango"]

Midnightshade29

It doesn't matter if you have a better product only that u waste your money on ad space.

why are you so upset by this?

ms created a better product, which the majority of the consumers prefer. all is well. ;)

-Released their system at a price point that was equivalent to a budget PC

-Had a VERY weak launch lineup (and continued to be weak for a while)

-Western developers favored the 360

-The online generation pretty much reared its head and those with an Xbox 1 with XBL obviously went with the 360
