Poll Why did tactical shooters die? (44 votes)

Consoles 36%
Some other reason (explain) 55%
Consoles 9%

My friends, using electricity and a plug, I am currently playing a video game. Arma III. released in 3 packs the single player is now done.

As I play I think to myself "I use to love Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear, Ghost Recon, ah good times, this reminds me of them but why don't these excellent titles exist anymore?".

The gaming media apparently not giving two hoots about tactical shooters or RTS (Adam Sessler) seems to reinforce the idea that the gaming media only want to promote stupid games that will make money since a seal with no flappy flaps can play them. This seems partly the reason.

Ubisofts "redesign" of Tom Clancy games from tactical shooters to gear of war with terrorists instead of aliens ('merica!) seems to be one of the main reason. The Tom Clancy use to be very important you know!

Having a deep respect for your opinion and an admiration for your passion, rather than take my own opinion, which could be bias (it isn't) perhaps we can shed light on to as the "how" and "why" it is come to this.

Multiplayer wise, a few still exist, on pc. Single player wise, aside from arma, the genre appears to be totally dead.

I'm surprised at the RSV2 hate on here. I really liked both of the Vegas games. I liked classic Rainbow, too. Like Ravenshield.

Not to be too offensive......but because they require thinking and patience? People just want to pop a game in after a long day at work and blow shit up. An over-generalization, sure, but I think there's a lot of truth in it.

My friend, I feel deeply this kind of comment gives great disservice to gamers. It's also just not true. Even casual gamers can spend hundreds of hours in Worlds Of Warcrafts or civilizations.

This attitude on display (that gamers are dumb and should be treated as such ) is most likely the attitude Ubisoft adopted when they "reinvented" Tom Clancy games to be Gears Of Wars with terrorismisms (not a tactical shooter btw, nothing tactical here). Or Ghost Recon: Futuristic People . Or them new Splinter Cells (which are all shite).

@uninspiredcup: Dude, the gaming community are fucking ass holes. Why do you think feedbackula exists? I sometimes hate calling myself a gamer because of all the losers/asshats associated with this hobby.

There are probably people who watch the sales numbers. They'll continue the games that sell well and ax those that don't. If you like a game, support it. There's no better way of supporting a game than forking your money over.

I would guess these kind of games didn't sell that well.

Because of god damn consoles. Yesterday i laughed when i tried that new Thief game, since it's completely on-rails and has cutscene/cinematic after cinematic every 60 seconds..

Last good Tactical FPS i know (before Takedown: Red Sabre) is Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield.

Glad it's dead. Didn't take long, either.

It died because less and less people played them.

The games got samey very quick. There are only so many tactics you can use; the few ones that keep you alive, or everything else that will kill you instantly. Very little room for improvising or experimenting.
