a number of reasons including more competition, a lack of triple A games compared to the Nintendo 64.

In general, poor third party support. The PS2 got the butt-load ofthird-party exclusives last gen.
There was way more competition. It was the N64 vs PS1. During the GCN there was Xbox and PS2. And Xbox was able to steal a lot of Nintendo's American audience who played Golden Eye, Perfect Dark with Games like Halo. Cause remember N64 did sell alot in the US. In Japan the N64 completely bombed due to a lack of RPGs.
Both used non-standard storage mediums with less memory than the competition.
Both only had ONE analog stick on their controllers.
Both lost third-party support to the competition (PS, PS2, XBOX).
The GC lacked proper Online support.
Game libraries were moot with a few exceptions. The GC's library was much weaker than the N64's imo.
Overall the N64 was my favorite console of its gen, but the PS2 was my favorite of last gen. I think its fair to say the competition from Sony threw Nintendo off balance and then the Xbox came along to make things even worse.

damn straight. Look at that textureI thought someone might bring up the c-stick. I don't consider it an analog stick in the same way as the Dualshock and Xbox controllers dual analog sticks. Its unconventional, too small, and doesn't have smooth circular movement.

but the thing is that it is still an analog stick, even if it is too small or unconventional for your tastes, just like despite how bad it is the 360's dpad is still technically a d pad.

So? It's still an analog stick. It allows the use of more than 8 way directions, thus making it an analog stick. It doesn't matter if it's not up to YOUR standards.

That's like saying that the R2 and L2 buttons on the Dualshock 3 don't count as triggers because they aren't like other triggers.

Fine guys. Its an analog stick but I was definitely thinking of its use with shooters here.
Btw I actually really like the GC's controller :)
Because since going 3D, Nintendo makes a mistake at the beginning of the gen to harm their overall status at the end of the gen
N64 didn't use CDs
GCN didn't use DVDs
Wii doesn't have multi=platform capable hardware
Actually you left out the Sega Saturn for fifth generation and the Sega Dreamcast for the sixth generation. I know Dreamcast has only about a two year lifespan, but regardless it was still present for some time. Anyway I agree that it was mostly Microsoft that cause the sales for the Gamecube to be low and it also didn't help Nintendo sales that much either with the PS2 dominating that generation of gaming. There was way more competition. welll I do agree that I hate the analog stick on it, but yea other then 360's and Genesis's controllers gamecube was one of my favs.
Although the GC had many great games, it had competition as well, as to where the 64's position was, there was no one around to bother him.
It was easier to pirate PS2 games, and the PS2 came with a lot of false promises (good marketing).
I think those were the 2 main reasons that it became so succesful.
So no one's pointing out that the TC is wrong, and the GCN didn't sell as much as the N64?
33 million is a bigger number than 22 million
+1 the yellow nub was almost completely useless. I'd hardly call it a workable analog stick.I thought someone might bring up the c-stick. I don't consider it an analog stick in the same way as the Dualshock and Xbox controllers dual analog sticks. Its unconventional, too small, and doesn't have smooth circular movement.

plz ppl dont blame the PS2 as the N64 had PS1 in the same era. While PS1 was way better than N64, atleast it had some hits. the GC was just aweful. saved us $199. the controller was worst than N64'sPSP107
yes, i thougth a cow would come to cause caos. PS1 was way better than the N64.NO. N64 had SM64 and zelda OOT. that itself proves that the N64 was the better system. BTW TC, the GC cam 3rd because:the PS2 had a head start. the xbox came and stole some sales in america.(though it was last in quality in my opinon) and the GC lacked 3rd party support. I still think the GC was better though, it had the best games last gen. and i had a PS2 and a GC, so i had all the quality titles.:P
I'd say for these reasons:
- They Cube developed a "kiddy" image that gamers weren't into.
- PS2 made their release at the right time, and had an attractive DVD player to match, thus stealing the audience.
- Xbox made the "kiddy" image more prominent for the Cube.
Those are my thoughts anyway. (I don't think it had to do with the Cube's library per se, because the library is pretty awesome (I have 40 games+ for it, most of which is good stuff).
I'm very curious why the Gamecube sold the same amount the N64 did.

Unlike this round of consoles, the GC didn't do anything to set itself apart from the other two.
Appealing mostly to the same crowd that bought the N64... hardcore Nintendo fans. Which is basically what Nintendo is doing this generation too, with the added bonus of the non-gaming crowd (i.e. sales of games like No More Heroes, Madworld, Zack & Wiki, etc aren't what they should be for a console with a 50+ million install base).
But, Nintendo profitted on the N64 and GC... so I don't know what there is to complain about.

so having Mario 64 and Zelda OOT automatically makes a console the best ever, if thats the case then the Wii is the best console ever made, cause it has those and truckloads of other games on the Virtual Console, im not going to argue with you about the N64 vs PS1 and all that, but at least make a better argument, since 2 games dont make a system at any rate, the Gamecube failed for a few reasons, the obvious one was competition from the PS2 and Xbox, I would reckon both Sony and Microsoft have more money then Nintendo, so they could have more marketing, better chances of securing 3rd party support etc. the other issue was simply the decline of the Nintendo brand, if you would go back to 1989 and asked a parent of one word that means gaming to them, they would probably say "Nintendo", parents would have been more likely to buy children a Nintendo system then anything else. fast forward to 2002 or so, and the picture changes, Nintendo is still a well known company, but the PS1 did its job of helping to make the Playstation brand as relevant to gaming as Nintendo was in the late 80s, and since Sega was out of the competition, many old sega fans simply bought a PS2. but I do like the GC. its a very underrated system, but I do like the N64 more[QUOTE="gamedude234"][QUOTE="PSP107"]plz ppl dont blame the PS2 as the N64 had PS1 in the same era. The Game Cube Failed because because it was about graphics instead of game play and Nintendo didn't make the Game Cube attractive enough to third party developers.

but the N64 had lots of excelent games. it had by far better games then the ps1. but they missed 1 thing
RPG's and Mature games.
those 2 things made the ps1 sell in the US and Japan, which are the 2 most important markets for the gameing industry, next to europe

That is not a mistake because game would not be ported to the Wii because the control scheme or it would have shotty controls plus the so called hardcore gamers would continue still avoid the Wii because they think Nintendo is kiddy and would continue to think that. Nintendo may actually get more third partys because it is much cheaper to develop games for the Wii because it isn't a HD clone.
