yes, i thougth a cow would come to cause caos. PS1 was way better than the N64.NO. N64 had SM64 and zelda OOT. that itself proves that the N64 was the better system. BTW TC, the GC cam 3rd because:the PS2 had a head start. the xbox came and stole some sales in america.(though it was last in quality in my opinon) and the GC lacked 3rd party support. I still think the GC was better though, it had the best games last gen. and i had a PS2 and a GC, so i had all the quality titles.:P

so having Mario 64 and Zelda OOT automatically makes a console the best ever, if thats the case then the Wii is the best console ever made, cause it has those and truckloads of other games on the Virtual Console, im not going to argue with you about the N64 vs PS1 and all that, but at least make a better argument, since 2 games dont make a system at any rate, the Gamecube failed for a few reasons, the obvious one was competition from the PS2 and Xbox, I would reckon both Sony and Microsoft have more money then Nintendo, so they could have more marketing, better chances of securing 3rd party support etc. the other issue was simply the decline of the Nintendo brand, if you would go back to 1989 and asked a parent of one word that means gaming to them, they would probably say "Nintendo", parents would have been more likely to buy children a Nintendo system then anything else. fast forward to 2002 or so, and the picture changes, Nintendo is still a well known company, but the PS1 did its job of helping to make the Playstation brand as relevant to gaming as Nintendo was in the late 80s, and since Sega was out of the competition, many old sega fans simply bought a PS2. but I do like the GC. its a very underrated system, but I do like the N64 more

i agree on this for the most part.

but the N64 had lots of excelent games. it had by far better games then the ps1. but they missed 1 thing

RPG's and Mature games.

those 2 things made the ps1 sell in the US and Japan, which are the 2 most important markets for the gameing industry, next to europe

true, the only RPGs i can think of now are:paper mario. shame about that....:(

I personally liked the PS1 more, the N64 is a great system, but I prefered the PS1 and even the Saturn more, mainly due to the wealth of RPGs and Fighting games on both systems. the funny thing is my fav games on the N64 are Resident Evil 2 and Conker's bad fur day. I think that had Nintendo used CDs the N64 could have beat the PS1 easily

I'm very curious why the Gamecube sold the same amount the N64 did.

STXSambodog
Actually, the Gamecube sold LESSER than the N64. The N64 sold 34 Million worldwide (roughly), while the Gamecube sold 22 million. It was quite a failure, actually, though it had a crapload of great games.

I thought the Gamecube was better because it had Metroid on it unlike the N64. Also I perferred Wind Waker to Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo got hurt by Sony during the N64 era and didn't recover during the Gamecube era. Nintendo was almost being cocky in its refusal to move along from the cartridge format and in turn Sony beat them with the PS1. Developers didn't want to publish their games on cartridges any more because it was really expensive compared to publishing games on CDs. As you guys remember Nintendo lost Final Fantasy during this time because Square wanted to develop for a system that used the CD format... Also a big blow to Nintendo. I loved the N64 but I thought that thePS1 had a much better assortment of games out for it. I love RPGs so I was using the PS1 much more. The PS1 was almost the SNES of its era. The Gamecube did poorly because it didn't have a stellar Mario game (great but not as universally received as Mario 64 or SMG), it looked like a kid's toy and the controller was really poor for FPSs which were all the rage last gen. Also I don't know what they were thinking with the 1.5 gb mini discs - that eliminated a bunch of ports right there (although I'm sure it eliminated piracy to some degree)... Not to mention they had two serious competitors last gen vs. one serious competitor during the N64 era. But who cares now? The Wii is selling incredibly and is shaking up the gaming world (no pun intended).

The Gamecube flopped because it could not get it's primary target audience - kids. All the kids wanted to play PS2 and Xbox, with their GTAs and Halo's. So all the Gamecube had were just gamers, and that is not enough to support a console's life span.

The Gamecube had some very underrated games, but bad third party support from perfectionist first party developers will always kill any console. Of course, Nintendo still have Sony to thank for the PS1 and the PS2, otherwise, Nintendo wouldn't have been so desperate to make a radically different console that created a paradigm shift in the industry.

Because they went for the kiddie audience. Problem is, kids want to play Halo, Burnout, GTA, etc.

1. N64 had more killer apps, in fact i'm not even sure the Gamecube had any killer apps at all, the closest would probably be Wind Waker but its style was really unpopular with mainstream gamers of the time. N64 started out with Mario 64, which looked leagues ahead of platformers on the the competition and wowed people somewhat, then had Goldeneye which appealed to a completely different, more adult demographic and was a huge system seller, and then Ocarina.

2. The N64 had more early buyers leading on from the SNES period, who in the beginning thought the N64 would take over from SNES as the biggest console, whilst Nintendo didn't have as much clout anymore with gamers by the time of the Gamecube release.

3. From a design perspective the Gamecube hardware is pretty much mainstream gamer repellent.
