Every year when the VGAs come on, i always see gamers post things like "Ill youtube all the cool trailers, i wont dare give the VGAs any support" or "VGAs are complete garbage and need to end" why?! Yes it can be cheesy sometimes, but im glad video games are finally on a level as a art form that they can have their own awards show like the grammy and oscars. So whats the deal? why are they so hated?!HelghastXtremeYou just answered your own question.

They have got better every year and the year with Jack Black was hillarious and Doogie Howser did good last time also.. All awards ceremonies are cheesy to some extent. They usually have cool trailers and funny hosts and the hard working developers

Because it degrades and stereotypes gamers to the public. The VGA's are actually holding gaming back from being a well-respected art form to the likes of the movie and music industry (granted, the Oscars and Grammy's aren't any better). Ranging from dumb, unfunny jokes and a poor selection of nomination that only attract the fraternity COD-playing crowd, the VGA's do not represent gaming in a respectable fashion, thus why many gamers hate the VGA's.
Its pointless and literally has no benefit to us. 2010 VGA's I only watched because of Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, and Skyrim. Other then that it was a waist of my time. The jokes were awful. The Entrance for NPH was random  and Cutscenes with the Characters getting their awards were awful. IMO
Well, the last only one that I watched was last year and it was terrible. It began well but it was very badly executed. I mean, they don't even announced all winners in the show. Not to mention that they were showing something else entirely and suddenly, the game of the year is... red dead redemption.
.
not to mention that online polling is a terrible way to decide winners.
And i was upset that Black Ops won Best Multiplayer over Battlefield Bad Company 2  I mean come on!
When a hug televised Video Game Award show's first ever show starts with a person saying she just wants to take her cloths off, well it makes people who play video games look like nothing more than the old stereotypes of perverted men living in their mothers basement. The Video Game Awards are like the Grammy's of Video Games they make their awards and the games selected appeal to the lowest common demoninator and don't really appeal to what is phenominal or deserving, the only problem is that the Grammys don't hurt music's image, the VGA's however hurt video game's image.
Comparing the VGAs to the Grammys... lol.
Ohh wow.
Ok, ok... the VGAs are bad. The celebrities don't know what they're talking about and the awards themselves are less than stellar.
Because every year, every damn year, they attract me with awesome trailers and announcements. And every time, every damn time, I get sucked in, thinking that maybe this year would be different, But no.
I get corny jokes that the crowd doesn't know whether to laugh at or just stare. I get hosts who don't even play video games. I get god-awful nominees for awards. That is, indeed, why I hate the VGA's.
Same here, that was my first and last VGA.I tuned in for the very first VGA some odd years ago. The nominees were all terrible and immediately after announcing the winner of the first catagory, some random rap group came out and sang something completely irrelevant to gaming.
Never.
Again.
Vaasman
i probably should not have given up on them so soon but after watching the first one it was tough to watch a second year.
it was all "WOOOOOOOOO!!! WRASSLIN! WOOOOOOOO!!!! MADDEN!!!!!!"
i just couldn't see wasting any more of my time.
Let me put it another way. Black Op was nominated for game of the year, but starcraft 2 and mario galaxy weren't. VaasmanVanquish not getting nominated for GOTY was a far bigger blow to their already lacking credibility. Vanquish is actually responsible for exposing many frauds who claim to be a "professional gaming publication." Thankfully GS, IGN, and to a lesser extent Gametrailers recognised it as one of the very best 2010 had to offer. Good job guys on giving credit where it's due.

Imo they're not much different from celeb obsessor shows. I can't stand the grammys, oscars, or VGAs, mostly because they ignore great games, music, and movies, even when they are more significant and innovative than what's popular. And then you have the people who truly believe that awards like that actually mean something special and are intoxicated by all the hype and fame.

the oscars dont pick the winner by online polling. you can disagree with their choices all you want, but atleast twilight movies arent sweeping the oscars every year.
but beyond the winners being generally a joke, i just dont like the whole tone of the show. they speak down to gamers.

I just expanded upon and improved your point :D
It's ok, I'm here for the same reason as you, and that's to expose the VGAs for the shallow popularity contest that they so obviously are.
I just found this video , lmao - WARNING - colorful language

Try and keep a straight face. I dare you.

He's right about SMG2, but... man. Straight face keeping was hard.
It's not a show for gamers, that's why. I swear, the producers must have played like 10 COD matches, and judged the gaming community on all the annoying guys with mikes.

My opinion.
It's garbage, and is meant for brogamers and casuals. It doesn't represent the gaming world that I care about, so of course I'm not going to watch it.
