It is because they are designing the Characters so that it will be accepted in the west.Nintendo_Ownes7That's just stupid. I don't think Miyamoto designed Mario because he wanted him to be accepted in the West.

[QUOTE="Luigi_Vincetana"]Well the white skin isn't really the issue (many Japanese people have quite fair skin) but the characters can sometime look quite Caucasian. I'm guessing it's to do with fitting in better with the setting, most of which are fantastical. Then again many characters do look quite Asian (Cloud and Tifa in their advent children incarnations for example) Though the hair colour does tend to have more variety then it should. Still what annoys me more is why the hell are Ubisofts Middle Eastern characters (the Prince from PoP and Altier from AC) white?Rahnyc4actually most japanese are like a odd brown skin, when compared to chinese. chinese people are more fair skin, while most japanese are like a darker shade. Not really. Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese people all originally have fair skin. The dark ones are those who've been exposed to the sun a lot. Like my uncle for instance. I used to be fair, but I've gotten darker myself. Now those with the darker shades live in South East Asian countries.

I've seen plenty of Iranians and Iraqis here who look white.I know (I'm an Arab myself, I have a couple of fair skinned relatives, including my mum) but the fact that both The Prince and Altier are white is what annoys me, it's not that common for middle eastern people.

But I mean, don't Japanese people have some kind of fixation with white people? Is that really a big deal though? In western countries we clamor over those who can get a good tan. It's the same thing (just kinda reversed).
Aren't white models super popular there?
I'm sure if I went to Japan with my blue eyes and my blond hair I would get more ladies than here in NA.DireToad

Well I finally found a commonality with Japanese Culture! I love the fair skinned.
well from what i've read there are a few reasons.
1. technical. Mario didn't have many colors and pixels to work with. they needed to add the mustache so that it would look right. after they did the realized it looked like their building owner who was Italian.
2. Blonde is rare. they are from a land of all black haired ppl. if they want to make someone really stand out. they make them blonde.
3. Market. NA is the biggest market. to cater to their tastes isn't unusual. they remake japanese movies with white ppl in the roles also.
just remember that in Japan they get more games with asian protagonists too. not all will make it here though.

anyone? I would actually like to play a japanese/asian character, but there are not too many out there, especially among Japanese devs.accameron
The Japanese influence for cartoons and animations comes from American newspapers from the early 1900's. I assume some time after the war but I don't know the specific date.
In the early 1900's most American cartoons that were published in papers, and even some animation, used distorted characters with distorted features such as large eyes or noses, short and stubby characters, etc.
Japan, influenced by early American cartoons, combined with their own devotion to tradition, still do much of their cartoons and anime in that style. White characters sometimes with distorted features.
If you watch The Animatrix, it has an interesting documentary about the begining of anime in Japan and how it was influenced by old American cartoons.
Well first off its not white guys.
Alot of JRPGS had characters with very anime looks and japanese anime characters dont usually look japanese, Recent JRPGS specially by square have a main character that instead look like an emo, or metro sexual japanese guy, which usually have a whiter tone then most japanese men, and such.
WilliamRLBaker
hero in MGS both white, hero in DMC white, hero in all the RE games white
seriously asians aparently dont like playing as asians

For me it depends on there appearance, Some girls look better to me tanned, others look better to me pale. For the most part though I prefer women with fairer skin than my own (I'm reasonably dark skinned so that isn't saying all that much).[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]Well first off its not white guys.

Still if you read enough manga/ watch enough anime the characters do start to look Asian (which then allows you to tell when a character's suppose to look foreign or not).[QUOTE="accameron"]anyone? like this racist crud right here... americas idea of what asian people looked like back inthe days.Ohh, I know that Image. I always see the young woman first (I have to concentrate to see the old woman).I think it has to do with perception more than anything. For example, Cloud Strife in FFVII looked like a white guy for years, but after Advent Children came out he definately looks Asian.
What do you see?

Exactly. I'm sure that the Japanese believe that they are playing Japanese characters and not a white one.
I think people( on many forums) have discussed so many times about this.
I don't think they make their character as white guys or Caucasian, whatever.
This is hard to explain....i guess only they know why is it like that. Maybe it like snowball....why guy started it other just picked up the style and art and continued. In ANIME (i have seen 100s) it is hard to tell what some character, what race, nationality, etc. It is as those things dont exist in ANIme
When it comes to games. It is different. Games like Resident Evil, DMC, Sillent HIll are obviously using white characters and in RE and SH characters are from USA. Why USA, well to be more Hollywood like, to appeal to biggest market in the World, and etc.
In the end who cares!?
oh and from what I hear whites with blue eyes blonde hair , are like prime rib in japan and the people go nuts for them aka Raiden. Sonic_on_crack
hmmm, well true for blond hair and blue eyes. But still you have to be attractive, you cant be some skinny, ugly faced nerd and expect to be popular just because you are blond and have blue eyes. That is stupid to believe.

Cloud doesn't look totally Asian in Advent Children. Most anime has always got this western inspired look to the characters.
Aion: The Tower of Eternity is a Korean made MMO, and the devs acknowledge the Western influence.
Ryu Hayabusa is very Western Inspired. In fact, a lot of the Ninja Gaiden/DoA series is. Do you really think the Japanese believe those DD chested women come from the most remote villages in Japan?
Someone said above to check out the Animatrix DVD and about the origins of anime. It's a decent start into the world of anime.
One reason would be not alienating the western market, as the Japanese folks seem to be accustumed to white characters but not the other way around. Kids or many other people may just not like it because it's different, sad but true.
Another is that it's the "style". Notice how pretty much all characters in FFVII changed from white (...and black..) to Japanese in AC? The Japanese just like drawing things rounder, I guess, which makes "japanism" harder to spot.
I know, it's weird... Also, in animes the only asian I've seen is Jet's archer friend in Avatar: The Last Airbender.darkIink
You've never seen Grave of the Fireflies?
It was exclusively Japanese.
Very different from all the other anime coming out from Japan.
somtimes, you think there white but there reall asian, case in point jin from tekkenG10mgs4
Jin Kazama....
How the hell did you think he was white?
They're not white, they're......I can never remember this word because its such a toughie....its where the character has no set ethnicity and is like a hodgepodge of everything. I know theres a fancy word for it. :(Vandalvideo
I agree..They look more asian than anything though but their not quite. The fancy word your looking for is tranny I think.

I understand about the origin of Anime, but newer Animes like Death Note and Bleach go out of their way to now show ethnic differences between characters. Cloud definitely looks more like an Asian with blond hair in Advent Children.

Dude, when I went to Japan, I never saw a pure Asian looking like that.
Eurasian, I'll give you that. But I've never seen someone who's had a facecut that looks eerily like a European.
The hairsty le, I can give you that. In fact, the whole Eastern design, I can give you. But, still, I didn't think Cloud looked very Asian to me in AC.
But I have to agree that the Japanese are seemingly becoming more and more interested in how they look rather than.... what looks they're interested in :?
